Thank you Tom Hess! I needed this… I have trouble with either the pick not gliding and getting stuck or can’t find the angle to use the thumb mute instead of the palm mute technique and end up muting the notes I’m trying to play.
Practicing fast vs. slow… the part you didn’t point out is that you have to be able to play to the tempo of the song. Maybe that should seem obvious, but I can’t tell you how many players I’ve seen over the years be able to alternate or economy pick in sync with the tempo and rhythm but completely lose the plot when they start sweeping, because they more or less can only sweep at one speed - the highest bpm they’ve gotten to. The other tricky timing thing is sweeping arpeggios that aren’t all one note per string. You have to be deliberate in practice to avoid losing your hand synchronization (the picking hand getting ahead of the fretting hand).
