Just did some calculations of the average rent vs the average income like you suggested...
Average Rent is $1,405 per month. Average Household Income is $56,516. Divide that by 12, and we get $4710 per month. So, if we subtract the average wage from the average income, we get $3,305.
*Americans, on average, make nearly two and a half times the income they need for rent.*
Interesting. Also, totally agreed. Using a metric like "average" for a place like America is very unwise.

Mortgage and rent are not the same thing. A mortgage is an investment of sorts and it makes sense to put a significant amount of income towards it. Rent is typically for younger people who are still getting established and probably need to put their income towards saving, investing and taking risks for the sake of improving themselves (i.e. career changes, opening a small business, experimenting with a side hustle, etc.)

One of my coworkers was bitching that our 15/hr job should raise our wages to 'at least 30 an hour' because he can barely pay rent.
His roommate who also works there, yelled at him that he hasnt paid his quarter of the rent in three months, and and that MAYBE if he stopped blowing half his paycheck on video games and cigarettes, he wouldnt be so strapped for cash.
Meanwhile another coworker is upset she didnt get a raise because she called out 87 days last year. (at 4 days a week for our schedule this means she called out close to 2 days half of her scheduled days)

Therefore priced way out of most of the working people's price range. A lot of building going on just outside of the city, but these too are priced as high as in the city. For more affordable housing people are having to live 30 - 60 miles from where the jobs are located. No dependable public transportation system so the money saved is eaten up by gas and higher auto insurance rates due to the mileage and having to live in higher crime neighborhoods.
I'm all for the free market, but damn I'd like to know there will always be an affordable place to rent near where I work.

Exactly. The real problem isn’t an increase in minimum wage, it’s an increase in supply and demand. If you support an easement in zoning laws and increase in available apartments, duplexes and houses, demand will go down, competitive prices will go up (while still covering utilities and other expenses of course), and supply will increase. An increase in the minimum wage will only result in the further devaluing of the American dollar.

      1) I've done exactly that SEVERAL times in my life w wife and kids. It's better to find a job or a cheap place to live before moving, but sometimes the fire is better than staying in the pan.
      2) "Jobs are not easy to come by" ... where you're at. If you're flexible on what you do or where you can do it, then be flexible. Not everywhere or every company is having the same struggles. Some companies THRIVE in down cycles.
      3) The target of my statement was on the price of things in different places and how incomes don't translate well. I've heard lots of horror stories of Californians making $500k in combined household income and still not being able to afford their apartment, food, insurance, etc. Thus they balk at "low" salary offerings in red "flyover" states without realizing the much lower cost of living that goes with in. How would your life change if your house payment (not rent) was less than $1,000/mo?
      4) You know where you're at and the situation you're in. Only you can make the determination if you can survive the present distress or not. Sometimes the best you can do for your mental health is to just let go of all the stressful stuff you're holding onto. If your life's road is moving away from where you're at, it might be time to look for the exit.

Alright, ill prepare myself. Im a dutch lefty, you cant imagine how left that would be in america.
I watch these videos te be informed about the other side of the debate.
In that vein i have a question. And hope for an open discussion.
I found a random example: oliver gaudet makes 150.000 per year. For being on the board of a beer and softdrinks organisation. Fulltime job.
A average job within the company is a buddweiser merchandiser, fulltime. It makes 24.000 that is right on your federal poverty level.
Oliver is on the board and has no significant risk. He did not help set it up or put up major investments.
Yet he gets more than 6 times the wage of this average worker.
I would not plead for a minimum wage, i would plead for a max multiplyer. The merchandiser is not the least earning wage. The company is doing well. 5.6 biljon net income.
I would plead that the highest earner should not be payed more than 4 times the lowest wage.
If the company does well, you can reinvest, hire more staff, lower the workload, or raise all wages.
What do you guys think, is there a multiplyer that would be fair in your eyes. Im curious.

    • @joykler
      @joykler 5 лет назад

      Notes*

      2. Maybe a straight multiplyer doesnt work and a formula needs to be inserted that takes account of the amount of people in a certain wage range. Oliver isnt the only one on the board, maybe all the wages of the board should be compared to the total of merchandiser wages. If you have thoughts on this please let me know.
      3. I have no problem with this company i chose one at random to show that its an systemic problem and this one is far from the worst.

I too have a random example: Bill Gates, upon reaching $1bil in wealth decided as obscene as that is, and far more than anyone deserves, and far more than anyone can spend, closed down Microsoft to show that he is pretty woke after all. While this helped the looters out briefly, hundreds of thousands summarily lost their jobs and hundreds of millions now have a large paperweight that used to be a functioning computer. Good for you Bill, you have a heart after all.
Oh wait, he went on to amass $79bil more giving billions of people more goods and services they voluntarily wanted more than their money. How unfair!

Another thing to consider is cost of living, and Seamus makes a great point, rent is lower in so many areas even within a state, if you don't think you can work a better job and can only work at McDonald's, take your experience out of NYC, Chicago, or California into a cheaper place that would LOVE to have you and where your wage goes further. Even companies are figuring this out, instead of moving overseas, they move headquarters/other jobs to cities with lesser taxes and regulations, and the beauty of this is that even though they're paying people less money, it's still a lower cost of living for many of the employees so they're happier still anyway, so everyone is happy.
Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good example, they were founded in Milwaukee, WI, but moved to California in the 1980's, since then they've slowly but surely moved back to Milwaukee because of the high taxes and regulations of California, as well as the constant drought issues California has compared to Lake Michigan for water supply for the brewery.
I don't remember this company, but one company moved their headquarters from NYC to Utah of all places, they were paying people close to $200k a year in NYC due to taxes and cost of living, but in Utah they could pay a quarter of that, and their work force was much happier than compared to NYC.
It's the age old saying, buy low, sell high. If more companies and people in general knew this then most of the housing issues in America would be moot anyway. People are trying to move to NYC, Chicago, California, Florida, or Seattle whether it's because lucrative industries, weather, or hell lets face it propaganda, how often do we see these places in the media as if they're the places to be? America is a HUGE place, and we can afford to spread out if we have to, there are many cities in America that are wanting people to either come back or just come in in general.
Hell even Rich people should take advantage of this, go on realtor.com and compare mansions between any county in the US to those 5 places, those 5 places mansions I've seen as expensive as $250 million, anywhere else in America the biggest/luxurious mansions at most go for $10m. Does my mansion need to be worth $250m to be happy? Hell no, if I can get a mansion for say $2m and have the same luxuries as those 5 places, I would do that in a heartbeat. Besides, when it comes to those 5 places, rich people have something that most of us can't afford, travel. They can visit the mountains/beaches/biggest cities any time they like thanks to private jets/helicopters, and thanks to technology, they can skype their business from home in case of emergency business, so that the only time a rich person needs to go to the city is for the most important meetings. How much money am I actually saving by doing this instead of living in an expensive city/state?
It's the same thing with medical care, there's a meme where it is cheaper to take spanish lessons, fly to Spain, get both of your knees replaced, and fly back than to do it here in the US on 1 knee, and before you say is Spain's healthcare better quality than the US? They can be equal quality!
People have to be smarter with their money in general, not just in investing, but understanding costs and where you can spend less money when you have to.

they ignore that there are ways to lower cost of living. their assessment is simply that cost of living only raises.
video mentioned roommates help for example. since personal relationships are messy especially with people you live with they aren't up for that.
so they don't like the idea of burden sharing with real people rather than the faceless nation wide "everybody" that they don't have to deal with personally.
they're left with technological and process efficiency advancement as a slow march that they ignore as progress in their thoughts about cost of living."
TVs and Microwaves weren't always this cheap. you think a Big A 4k smart tv for under 400 bucks was always a thing?
the better way is capitalism with social responsibility and the guts to admit most of us are spending money on crap we don't really need.
personally i am a bit anti-monopoly and pro competition in the marketplace but that's something to debate later.
i'm certainly not for paying a taco bell employee $15 an hour when they can't even give me all of my dang chalupas.

Also, people often pay considerably more than 25% of their income for rent. 1/3 or more is common in large cities, as I understand it, and isn’t some kind of huge burden (I’ve paid more than that for rent). Using that number the “required” income drops to about $26/hour.

Ohio's actual average is even lower than the mean shown on the US map (as I'm sure is the case with many states) because of our large cities like Columbus or Cleveland.
The average rent for the population that lives outside major city centers is usually $300 (for an apartment) to $500 (for a whole house) monthly.
In fact, as an anecdote most people I grew up with (a forgotten heroin/meth rust belt town) now are considered extremely successful and live quite comfortably making less than $11/hr.

Rents are artificially high due to central bank interventions. The Fed purchased $1.25 trillion in mortgage-backed securities, not to mention the effect of its zero/negative real interest rate policy. Why shouldn't huge financial firms like Blackrock enter the housing market, when there is an implied central bank backstop? If the market tanks they can offload bad paper to the Fed at mark-to-fantasy valuations. Of course, this is to some extent a global phenomenon, and global credit is blowing real estate bubbles in metropolitan markets worldwide.
