Thanks for the quick and dirty review on this awning. I have to say the biggest thing about freestanding awnings that scares me (seeing all the horror story on the tube....) is how quickly it is for a huge wind gust to essentially mangle the entire thing beyond repair. That's a LOT of wing surface and a lot of cantilever force applied to that one articulation where all the arms stack up. IF I ever buy another one (did buy an ironman once and returned/sold it one hour later after installation and realized the backside would NOT cover my kitchen/hatch area of my truck) I would certainly advocate to ALWAYS drop the extra pole or at least put the guy lines down. $270 is a great price. Best of luck.

I agree with you, it just depends on the day/weather. Certain days in my driveway there's absolutely no wind so it's free standing. Every time I've taken it to the beach, even with mild wind I stake it down. It only takes 3 minutes to stake it down so it's worth it.
If it's crazy windy I won't open it up, I'm familiar with the horror stories as well!

yep, and most of these lower priced awnings are REALLY weak at the joints and that's where they get messed up or break even in weaker winds.
