too bad, this tune was never popular, though I love it,and i think partly bcz this tune can only be performed by sthynaxe, the experimental midi guitar by yamaha, and later Lee went back to E -guitar again, so the tune never got popular
+林明 Actually he recorded it before he ever had a SynthAxe and the studio version sounds quite a lot different (on the Captain Fingers album) then this live performance. He did play another guitarsynth on the album though but certainly not the SynthAxe. It is kinda cool to see it used in a live performance like here.
@@林明-c7v Yamaha had NOTHING to do with the Synthaxe, its was the brainchild of Bill Aitkin, an English Guitarist/Engineer, who developed it in his garden shed in Oxfordshire in the UK. Lee Ritenour and Allan Holdsworth were both early adopters of the instrument. Strictly speaking, it's not an instrument at all, but more accurately a ' Midi ' controller used for sampling synthesizer sounds, allowing the guitarist to play them in a ' Guitaristic ' way.
I always rather liked the Larry Williams tenor saxophone solos on this version of Dolphin Dreams. They seem to fit in perfectly with Lee's playing (and the composition in general).
If I recall correctly the studio version of Dolphin Dreams (on the album "On The Line") features the inimitable Ernie Watts on tenor saxophone. Much as I really like Ernie Watts (and his many collaborations with Lee Ritenour), I just happen to prefer Larry Williams' playing on this particular song.
I recall "Captain’s Journey", in terms of making us feel both an intensifying storm and an softness of the sea. Parhaps SyntheAxe or Guitar-Synthe sound fit the tunes that have dramatic unfoldness like a progressive rock taste sound.
The Synthaxe wasn't developed until the mid eighties, and the Captain's Journey was recorded in 1978. He used the Polyphonic Systems 360 guitar synth on Captain's Journey. The Original Dolphin Dreams was on his Captain Fingers Record from 1977, where he used the Yamaha E2000 guitar synth which he is pictured with on the rear album cover photo. He's always been a ' tech geek' regarding guitar gadgets.
I didn’t say that SynthAxe had used in the original "Captain’s Journey". Only I said SynthAxe, or the guitar-controlled-synthesizer sound fits this type of tunes.
Erm, not really. The standards of people when this was performed wasn't this. This wasn't the go to thing to listen to then and it isn't now. It's a niche. Standards haven't changed, people still listen to generic 4 chord pop songs. Then and now.
I agree with Gareth, it doesn't make sense to compare nowadays mainstream pop bands to really good musicians from the past. In fact, the numbers of band, music styles, etc, is always increasing, so we actually have very good bands playing all styles you can imagine, the only problem is that you don't know these bands, you just listen to pop and think that's all there is.
I'm not sure I expressed my sentiments correctly. The music displayed here can certainly be considered timeless. During its time a lot of music even from contemporary pop also sounded similar albeit with cheesy lyrics and equally cheesy music videos. So with that said, the melody and just complete composition heard here was and still is sublime. As someone who grew up int he 80s, I identify with the sound. Today you won't find such music being created anymore; only very generic in your face and devoid of any kind of feel good emotions. That's what I get from this song.
supercooled I see two things happening here. First, you're overrating this song because of the nostalgia. And also, there is good non generic music filled with emotions today, you just don't bother searching it, and you prefer to keep listening to the same music.
SynthAxe... One of the coolest instruments of the 80s
CARLOS VEGA! THE GUY WAS SUCH A FANTASTIC PLAYER!! R.I.P. sir!!
The sounds of my childhood growing up watching GRP Live In Session with my dad on his VHS, love Lee Ritenour and his playing. One of the best ever
That’s the coolest guitar I’ve ever seen. And the best guitarist too!
Sublime composition!
2'02" What a sound! What a beautiful riff! This is one lovely tune, full of contrast and atmosphere. I just LOVE it!!

Give me an example of good music today.
Because I can't find it.
National music doesn't count (traditional music of a nation).
There's a reason you don't hear or see those guitars anymore.
シンタックスが廃れてしまったことはシーンの巨大な損失だと思う
復刻させるべき80年代のの名器
I remember liking this when I heard it in the 1980's. It sounds pretty embarassing now.
Hammett175
Why are you embarrassed?
It sounds so soothing and relaxing.
Imho, it even sounds better than the original.
@@MirekFe It's music to take a shit by.
This just sounds like old Cinemax porno.
