"Wet Feet?" Walking Newquay's Beaches from the Harbour to Porth, Cornwall walk

  • Inspired by Bob Acton's book of circular walks "Around Newquay", we decided to walk from Newquay Harbour to Porth, along the beaches at low tide. Armed with very specific instructions about timing this walk, we followed the advice but did we get through at low tide?
We start in Newquay harbour, exploring some of its fascinating history. We find answers to questions like: how old is Newquay Harbour? Why is there a central pier that seems to go nowhere? What was that tunnel used for?
With it being a low, spring tide, we were able to walk through the harbour entrance and join Towan Beach. After dreaming of the romantic situation of The Island House, we pick up the pace and pass Tolcarne Beach, and Lusty Glaze beach but will we be able to make it around the headland to Porth - is this the pinch point?
NB: If you are thinking of following this route, please check your tide times and make sure it is a spring tide.
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RUclips, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
    Frequently asked questions:
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Oh wow, thank you, that brought back such fabulous memories of us holidaying in Newquay with our family from when me and my now husband first met at age 17 until we had a family of our own. We walked that route regularly, and stayed at many many self catering apartments. We stopped going when it all became too commercialised with the hen & stag do days, such a shame. Wow 50 years ago when we first started going.

The views from Porth are fabulous, and it is a glorious place indeed for a picnic! You must check out the SW trail from Whipsyderry (pasty bench location) and head towards Water Gate Bay. The Caribbean colours on a summers day take your breath away!

Oh! Look at your painting of the island house! Your dog was having so much fun digging in the sand, I laughed out loud. Lovely seaside day. You two are not faint-hearted. I love when you show historic photos of the same spot with the present reality. So interesting. When I was a child, San Diego was still home to a large tuna fleet, and the Bumble Bee Tuna packing plant lay just south of Downtown. I remember the boats lined up along the Embarcadero, near the Anthony's Fish Grotto Restaurant. Crews were usually gone six months, fishing off the coast of Ecuador. Times do change.

Great video, done that walk several times, I love exploring the caves in the cliffs. You do need a very low tide to get round to Porth. One exciting low-tide activity is walking out to Looe Island. It does have to be a really low tide, the lowest of the year, and you're still at least knee-deep in water, but it's good fun! Many thanks for the entertaining video!

If doing this walk , wait until tide returns for a spectacular show from the blowhole on Porth Island . This is the ' pitch n putt' trail as travelling from Crantock where we used to stay , across the Gannel at Fern Pit Ferry , climb up to Pentire and the first pitch and putt coarse . Have a game , walk down to the harbour , time it for a pint and pasty in the Red Lion . Down through to the harbour along the beach to Porth and up to the pitch and putt . Have a game , taking care not to hit people on the beach with a golf ball , and kill time until the tide comes in . Walk out to Trevelgue Head on the Island to watch the blow hole . When bored, walk back into Newquay for eats and a few beers and possibly a live band at the Red Lion and cab back or back to Crantock and the Albion via the Fern Pit Ferry .

Wet feet.... followed by chocolate orange cake to make you forget about them! What more can you ask for on a tour of those vast beaches?! Huge confession to make here....Newquay is probably my least favourite of towns in Cornwall (sorry!).... But I had forgotten how amazing the beaches are there, just miles of golden sands stretching out as far as the eye can see. I must confess I haven't been to Newquay in a very long time. Used to take the kids to the beach there many moons ago now back in the 70s and 80s but it was never my first go to choice. However, you two could well change my mind after watching this vid! And so much sand for Mr. Scrumptious to dig in as usual!! x J x...... P.S. Love it that you use the old maps Sarah! Can't be doing with technology...the old ways are the best!

I always remember the fabulous Surf 🏄‍♀️ at Newquay, on family holidays we all used to try surfing, emphasis on trying, I never mastered standing up either Sarah! Seeing that scary looking suspension bridge reminded me of a time when my ‘Pointer’ Pup. Jodie and I had to be rescued from one that was swaying so much she lay flat out spread eagled, with a terrified look on her face, much like mine! and refused to move, it was so embarrassing 🙈 being rescued by a bunch of very handsome young men! It took four of them just to lift Jodie! after prising her claws from the slats of wood she was clinging on to! 😰 I was a bit concerned when you had to dodge the incoming tide and ended up with wet boots, and a 2ft. Water 💦 line Andrew, at least Sarah found some nice sea glass, and Digger lived up to his nick name! I was in stitches when Andrew kept forgetting how many steps he had counted, who needs keep fit classes! I only have fourteen stairs to tackle up to the bedroom and that’s like climbing Mount Everest at my age! well you have worn me out now, so have a nice day and thank you 🙏 for a wonderful outing around Newquay, until next time, 🤗👋

I have walked the coastal path there a couple of times, and also been out on Trevelgue Head at Porth and had a snack on the same bench 🙂 But I have never walked the beaches there at low tide. That would be great. Is it safe to walk there barefoot? I have heard a lot about the poisonous stingy weever fishes. We have got them in Norway too now, I believe. I have also stayed at the Vicoria hotel a few nighte. Did you know that that hotel is one of the locations when they filmed "Magical Mystery Tour" with the Beatles in the 60's? 🙂 Thank you for showing us this lovely walk 🙂 Torunn.
