Alex really loved David, and while David also had obvious feelings for Alex, he also wanted more fun with others and didn’t want a relationship with Alex. Maybe he regretted hurting Alex in the end, but the essence of the movie really is being told through Alex’s vision and his ideal image of David. Alex wanted his perfect partner and projected that onto David. Ultimately after the grievance, we can see at the end Alex is trying to move on and doesn’t let this define his life, rather seeing it as a moment in his past, also known as the Summer of 85. It’s honestly a great story of first love, followed by heartbreak, grief and ultimately moving on.
