Thanks for this (3 years late!!) I am making a “mini” one of these for my books! The pocket will hold my library card, phone, and money 😁 except I do not have a sewing machine but I am in no hurry to finish I guess 😋
I like the way the pocket is constructed here, creating such a nice finished edge. I think I'll make a tote for my choir music folder, and sew some lines down the pocket to create pencil/highlighter holders, because we use those every day when learning our music. I'm also thinking it may be nice to stiffen the fabric a little with an iron-on interfacing.
Thank you for this video. I am thinking of making these similar bags and put stuff like soap, protein bars and condoms in t hem and giving them to the homeless/low or no income people in my town. Thanks again!!!! Easy and fun!
Thank you for posting this video! I'm super beginner-level and seeing this is much more helpful than trying to read a pattern alone. It looked like you only backstitched on the pocket, is that right? It is unnecessary to backstitch all the seams? Thank you!
+Evie Curley Yes, those are the only places I backstitched. I don't backstitch seams that will later be crossed by another seam; I wrote more about why here: mellysews.com/2015/04/the-right-way-to-sew.html
On the blog, the measurement for the pocket says 9.5x11in, but the fabric in the video looks twice as long! As a beginner, I might be misunderstanding something - can you clarify? Thank you! :)
Best tote bag instruction ever. thank you Melissa. Knocked out 6 bags in no time at all. They look great.
Glad it was helpful!

The pocket is 9x11, same as on the blog.
Note that the 9x11 is the finished pocket measurement, after it is sewn.
you left out measurements where are they
As mentioned in the video, dimensions and written instructions are in the post linked in the description.
