Bloody shame, the railway isn't what it use to be, i drove a 47 class when i was 14 ,it was used as a bank engine to get the goods train up tumulla hill, then uncoupled at Wimbledon then went back to Bathurst, the driver let me drive it into the loop and back to the station, loved it, thank you driver , you have given me a childhood memory I'll never forget 👍👍

My partner and I had a 2 hour personal tour with Keith Jones in December 2020, arranged by our AirBnB host in Dorrigo.
The only request was that we make a 'donation' to assisting them.
This video seems to show the worst of the decay except the steam locos briefly resplendant in their used oil preserative coating, after the important brass bits have been removed to prevent pilfering.
We saw lots of railway heritage that would have been cut up, junked and lost for ever. We saw cranes, carriages, locos and even a special tank carrier plus tank that were is reasonable order, plus volunteers labouring away reroofing carriages, waterproofing and some restoration. Huge earth works are gradually expanding the level area, with the excavation done free in return for clean fill used locally.
Keith was generous with his time and deeply committed to a dream that exceeds potential resources.
He reminds me of two members of the Citroen car club who had the largest collection of old and classic Citroens and I have known through the course of 50 years and 17 Citroens.
They are absolute enthusiasts, not businessmen. One lost many of his cars in a bushfire. Much like the Zig Zag Railway at Bell.
The other has some very rare Citroens including 2 x Traction coupes, a fully restored and RHD converted SM, a GS birotor and many Tractions in a paddock similar to some of Dorrigo rail stock.
He at least had a number of large sheds.
When we left Kieth we made a $50 donation. Then I has a rush of blood to my head because I was impressed at the genuine enthusiasm to prevent rail heritage items disappearing.
I offer Keith $100. He declined. "$50 is enough support and appreciated."
I am sure that if the same level of Government support that was put into Thirmere Rail Museum was made over a 5 or 10 year period, with a maximum of 10% for future 'special acquisitions',
plus some bureaucratic concessions, like a modest car park (+ overflow parking along the road or in a paddock) - both Dorrigo and the state would have a great asset for the future.
You need both the enthusiast plus a businessman..... AND - less bureaucratic misadentures/////////

Not a greedy one.... Unless we are inside Keith's head will will never know.
It was not Keith's fault the restored rail link down mountain was washed away and with it a key component of the viability. Flood has drained many resources.
Sometimes life conspires against out dreams.
Recently we attended the 30th Steamfest at Thirlmere. Fabulous weekend.
$10s of millions of government money made it a reality.
Zig Zag lost their dream too.... bushfire this time.
I had 21 backers for my own dream in 1990-1993,
Only the one investor profited considerably. All the rest of us lost $1m in total - close to $3m in today's terms. Some of those who lost the most are my closest friends over 3 decades later....

Some classic locos and rolling stock there - would love to see them restored. As a young boy growing up in southeast QLD and northern NSW in the 70s and 80s I have fond memories of seeing (and somewhere, photos of) 42-class locos hauling the Brisbane Limited on the standard-gauge track around Vulture Street and South Brisbane, 44-class locos hauling the Gold Coast Motorail around Murwillumbah and the Tweed Coadt hinterland. I also remember being quite disappointed when boxy 422-class locos started replacing them on these services, as to me they lacked the elegance of the "streamliners".

Great video tour, however, is it sad, pathetic, heart breaking or just downright disgusting? Many of the locomotives arrived at Dorrigo in fair to excellent condition, some were still near or in working order on the premise that they would be restored and used for heritage workings or static display etc. Many donated these engines and other rolling stock in good intention to what was perceived as a "good cause" only for them to end up like this. One of the sadder stories of NSW rail preservation. Should I be sad, angry, or bewildered at seeing them rotting away like this? Thanks for the video.

Got a question for ya dennis, have you ever heard of the great Barry scrapyard in england ? Well if you have then you would know that the locos and rolling stock in dorrigo are in mint condition compared with what came out of that junk yard and 90% of the salt air rotted hulks that came out of there have been running for decades, non of thoes locos were covered in oil and were sitting by the sea in salty acidic air and in some cases longer than what our locos have been in dorrigo so its fair to say that we have every chance of restoring any of our exibits to working order with far less work than what the barry engines needed.

Not really, I've read a lot of the paper work surrounding this and it basically boils down to one person and his mate securing the land for themselves by first taking over the project in it's infancy by appointing themselves as being in charge ,relying on the naivete of the first group of enthusiasts, . In the meantime the state government paid out a lot of money to see it up and running, but it appears that most of the monies gifted were simply used to buy more locos, And keep one person in the style he assumed he was allowed to.
Several things will happen in future, the State government will demand that the site be cleaned up (waste oil and asbestos everywhere) and a commission of enquiry as to why money gifted by the state was not used as intended .
It also needs to be mentioned that only once did a train operated by the museum ever run on the tracks, and that was done illegally almost 40 years ago. there is no hope for the stuff there now .

A true Australian tragedy.. most of these locomotives will never see, well.. locomotion again.
I have nothing against Keith, if it wasn't for him these locomotives wouldn't be here, however I question which of the two was the better option, them getting scrapped, or them rotting away as they are now.
It's like the "delusion of free choice" thing that became a meme format, both are different options but result in the same thing; the locomotives never seeing the open tracks again.
I saw another video that documented Dorrigo in 2018-19 and while some things had been done, overall it was such a small amount that it felt nothing had been.
Wooden rolling stock with massive boards and planks bolted to the sides to keep the wood from bowing in the middle due to the underframes rotting away, others worse to the point Keith even admitted there was no hope of saving them.
Locomotives permanently stained by oil in what has now become a poor attempt to preserve them, 3813's once still green bolted tender now just rust with mere speckles of the fantastic green she once wore.
All relics of a hope, a vision that will never come to fruition.
It has been 30 years and even the government offered to help get the museum on it's feet but pulled out after Keith would not identify where the money would go.
Dorrigo is the Barry scrapyard in an alternative reality, the unfortunate outcome of a desire to save as much as possible but only "in the moment" without a clear view for the future and the finances to do so.
Please. The "museum" has been in this "open to the public soon!!" state of limbo for thirty years. Please just admit it won't happen. The museum cannot rely solely on donations and volunteers. If the museum has any hope of getting the finances, contact Transport Heritage if they will help or get something presentable going and open the doors. It is the only way I see the museum ever becoming what it was meant to be.., a museum.

    • @superwombat
      @superwombat 9 месяцев назад +1

The museum has been offered grants and help before, but this would have meant becoming more democratic, transparent, and rational. This will never happen so long as KJ has control. • @clockwork3494
      @clockwork3494 9 месяцев назад +2

@@superwombat Indeed.. at this rate I'm wondering if it'll happen at all.. most of these locomotives are likely well beyond the stage of operational restoration and even cosmetic is debatable at this point.
I get the feeling much of it will be scrapped or tossed when KJ passes away.
Whether it's either auctioned off, thrown out or some past memebers start filing lawsuit claims there's likely not much left that can be saved, if any.
      It's just.. sad.
So many beautiful locomotives all left to rot due to one mans greedy "preservation" pipe dream.

They did not waste money. They got it up and running. It even joins the main line for trips. Downs Steam and Tourist Railway. Check them out. I have no vested interest, but it makes Dorrigo look like Dad's Army. No rusting junk or "oiled over" locos at Toowoomba Museum. Only 5 dollars to get in too. Bargain.

Whilst the 42 and 421 class are General Motors Corporation engines of US design they both differ in appearance because they are a separate class of diesel engine. The 42 class were withdrawn in 1983 around February of that year and none got to be repainted in the Candy stripe livery after overhaul. They entered service in NSW in 1956. Introduced in 1965, the 421 class lingered on until January 1987 and that is the reason why 42102 is painted in Candy as shown here. One 421 managed to get painted in the Tuscan Reverse colour scheme in 1979 but was unfortunately scrapped at Simsmetal Mascot in January 1991 along with 42110 in the original colour scheme. The 42 class has grooves at the base of the nose and the 421 class doesn't. The 42 class has more ventilation grills on the side and the 421 class has a combination of grills and extra paneling which make it less streamlined looking than a 42 class in my opinion. However, a 421 class looks better at the front with no grooves at the base of the nose but this class of engine was notorious for emitting sparks and starting lineside fires in the NSW Southern Tablelands. Cullarin Range - Ilabo/Gunning/Breadalbane those sorts of places.

Its not a museum. Its a bloody scrap yard. And thats a bloody shame. What happened here? It was a project full of promise.

Not a museum. A hoarders possessions. A graveyard of trains and of other peoples dreams. Terrible waste. Mostly scrap value only. It took over 10 years and millions to restore the prized loco 3801. Who will pay for these ? The line to the coast is closed. These objects will never move again. Tragedy.

Adrian Kingston. If you think these locos are going to move under their own steam, you my friend are sadly delusional. Very sad indeed!

How hard would it be to crowd fund a semi tanker of Tuscan red and an industrial sandblasting unit?
That display is a greedy obsession, not an interest in railway history.
