Frusciante creates the tastiest riffs. He is such a killer player and writer.
He is absolutely awesome
Best lesson I've seen about this song. Thanks!
Thanks Leandro
I'm a bass player but I've been trying to learn this riff for the last four months, I think I almost got it with string muting, the up and down strokes, the open D , the ghost notes, etc. Now I can't stop, I'm addicted to it
This is lowkey the best tutorial I’ve ever seen on this riff
Thanks!
More people need to see this great tutorial
Thanks very much!
I'm addicted to this shindig 👍
Love this style of tutorial.
SUB
thanks!
This was awesome
ur awesome teacher
Keep on grooving my dude.
Can u do a lesson for John Mayer unreleased song called Level.
It has a funky riff that I love
thanks, and I'll check that song out
Nevers thought this would be this hard
Best lesson ever
Thanks very much!
He doesn't play all the strings. He directs the attack to the target note and consequently hits some strings that are muffled. But not all the strings
So Flea is also teaching guitar to us?
That open string always gets me
It's not easy
I only managed to do step 1 😭
attack the treble strings with all down strokes and you will get that frusciante feel that's missing.
Does this have the same notes as the riff from Carry on My Wayward Son?
This riff is much harder than the infamous Snow.
No..
No. Hey ho !
It’s super easy once you get the pattern down, unlike Snow which is always an endurance battle lol
When i was a scout I saw many amateur guitarists using their thumb to form G major chord. I considered that bad practice. Years later it turns out I was wrong 😄
haha, yeah Frusciante (and Jimi Hendrix for that matter), do/did alot of things that beginners are taught not too!
So easy to do
My thumb doesn’t wanna thumb
Is it the open D string or is it the 5th fret A string?
Frusciante plays open D, but you can do 5th Fret of A if you prefer.
Great lesson. I've been trying this for years now on my ibanez guitars and it feels like its impossible to get the muting done right. Do you think playing it on a stratocaster makes a big difference?
hey.. I don't think the type of guitar should have too much impact on the muting, especially not a major difference. Thanks for the question.
I'm still learning it on a hollowbody (from ibanez too) and it's a bit difficult, but here's my recommendation:
Some funk guitarists attach some clothe (a sock, for example) near the nut, so that, the open strings will be muted. By doing these you can strum all the strings keeping just one finger in the fret you want to sound and it will sound perfect. You can do this, however, you won't have a sock always, and sometimes, if you're playing other funky stuff you may prefer to avoid it because you could need those open strings for other parts of the song or whatever, so I encourage you to use this for learning the strumming pattern and as an example of how it should sound.
Once you have learned the strumming, you should do this for the right hand:
Mute all the strings with just the index finger and use the rest of them (even the pinkie) to play the notes that you want to sound. It's a bit difficult, but I think that by practicing you can get close to the original sound. By the way, if you do this you can't play the 0 fret on the fourth string, so play the 5th fret on the 5th string. It's the same note, a D, so it won't be a problem.
I hope you'll find this useful, it's just what I'm doing to learn the song.
if you have very low action it's more difficult to mute with the left hand. try to set up for a medium action. also it's harder with a very flat radius fretboard.
Actin my experience of an ibanez (s521) and a fender strat, the Ibanez was easier to mute

72 seconds? That is a long riff!
After watching this video I finally accepted I will never be able to play this riff in my lifetime. What's even worse, Frusciante does not only play this riff, he sings the vocals at the same time. He's sick, man!
(But I don't care any more. Is he good at EU policy? I fucking doubt it!)
No, he is definitely not good at EU policy. Just try and ask him to write a thesis on the pros and cons of the new Digital Services Act. It would not be good.

"Hard riff"
Dude that riff is hard, the fact is easy for you does not mean is not hard for most people
Learning guitar has a huge level curve, something you can play after a few months is insanely difficult for someone who’s been playing a week, just like something easy for someone who has been playing 5 years is probably quite hard for someone who has been playing for 3 years
Такой же кривой как фрущанте)
