This song is an example of how sometimes Prince was his own worst enemy. This version of Desire sounds absolutely fantastic like this. It's so full of energy, and even more important for an artist like Prince, it's incredibly distinctive. People are always "overly-claiming" how so many of Prince's non-singles could've been hits, but I honestly believe that this one truly had the potential to not just be a hit, but also be one of those that helped to emphasize his status as a genius. But Prince being Prince, decides to give it over to the Family, who couldn't match the energy or unique vibe that his version had. What made it worse was that they were a group that didn't last very long simply because P lost interest in them so quickly. Sinead's version of Nothing Compares 2 U shows what kind of musical potential lay within the music that P created for the Family's one and only album, and his versions of Desire, Mutiny, and Screams of Passion demonstrate just how he unintentionally hid so many unreleased gems from the public. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see just how big P became as a musical artist, but tracks like this one show that he could've been even bigger. Whenever entertainment media covers the greatest musical acts of the 1980's, they often mention names like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna or George Micheal before the Purple One's name finally comes up, when in reality, songs like this version of Desire reveal that the name of Prince should've always been the first.
Yes it's so funny really. The best songs by Prince are not anywhere, and not well known. This one is my favourite, to help others I'll list my top 10 here 1 - Desire 2 - All Day All Night 3 - A Love Bizarre 4 - Can't Stop This Feeling I Got 5 - We Can Funk 6 - Girl of My Dreams 7 - Do Yourself a Favour 8 - Where were you last night / Something in the water (Live Manchester) 9 - A Place In Heaven 10 - Moviestar A lot of these are from Chocolate Box, Prince's best album IMHO. Most are here on RUclips
I love the sultry feel of this gem! Missing and love you sweet n badass Prince! Love, Anita 💋❤️💜 Thanks for the dream! It was so special! Sweet! I’m battling an illness and the dream I had of Prince was like a beautiful blessing!! 🙏💜💜❤️❤️❤️
I’m a big fan of what The Family did - their one album and one live concert are on RUclips and they are excellent. Liked fDeluxe too (although Prince had nothing to do with them). Thanks for the upload.
The kid is in rare form tonight...miss you bro
Simply the best ever song by Prince. Genius

You’ve perfectly put into words something I’ve expressed, no where as nearly as concisely, to others before many-a time before - thank you so much 🙏
I have felt this exact way with so many of his songs for ages now. Fantastic comment
this track should be on a special edition of around the world in a day, as a vault track
Or maybe a 2nd part for Prince originals album 😍
Phenomenal 🎉
Prince ❤
Sounds like Prince left a hit on the shelf
He left ALOT of hits on the shelf.
This song was on the album for The Family, as was Nothing Compares 2 U
The version on The Family album was slow and lacked a pulse. I definitely prefer this version.
I agree, and missing Prince so much! Can you imagine the lyrics he would be writing about the pandemic? He was a treasure to us! Forever a fan! xo

Does anyone have version of this Desire song as a rehersal in early 80's in Mpls??
Can’t find it anywhere either… where he was like “space…”
Can’t find the live rehearsal version anywhere!!
