People are too busy watching Berezovsky. It's a damn shame. NOBODY has ever approached this. I don't want to hear the usual "ugh..Arrau plays so slow". it's 10 times harder to do what arrau does here than just someone playing fast and loud. He understood liszt better than anyone else ever has. listen to his scales for instance. HE ACTUALLY PHRASES THEM! This is epic, embodying the experience of a lifetime.
This is slow? I've been listing to a few versions (Trifonov, Berezovsky..) and yes, of course does Arrau sound different, especially the non-melody notes (Idk how to explain it), but it certainly doesn't feel slow😅
People spend so much time watching competition performances. In these days musicality and sensitivity are sacrificed for technique. Arrau's total approach in Liszt etudes is phenomenal. The value of his performances is eternal.
OMG what increlible sensitivity! even the smallest technical gesture brings something to the meaning of this masterpiece. Arrau is, very far away, the best interpreter of Liszt in the twentieth century.
The Transcendental Studies performed by Arrau are simply the "Gold Standard" Do not forget the prodigious line of succession to Claudio Arrau was lucky to receive: Liszt -> Czerny -> Krause -> Arrau. He was destined to be one of the few interpretative genius with a mission to expose the true and powerful music of composers geniuses throughout most of the twentieth century (he died at age 88)
The changes in speed that he dissociates between the left and right hand at the end of the piece is something that I find beautiful. These are things that I, at least, consider require great technique, beyond necessarily playing at a faster tempo or etc. They are imperceptible things that make a good performer.
and he waited till he was 74 to record them. that alone speaks for itself and his depth as an interpreter of liszt's music is quite special. A merging of pianist and composer. Plus he learned them from Martin Krause, one of liszt's last pupils.
I wouldn't say Arrau understood Liszt the best. I think his playing is significantly different from Liszt's. I think Arrau does a great job of portraying emotions that Liszt wanted and his 12 recordings of the etudes are AMAZING. His Dynatmics are always precise and full of emotion.Fast pace doesn't matter, playing fast and breezy means absolutely nothing. Anyone can do that. In regards to best interpretations of Liszt, it goes straight to Lazar Berman. Most underrated Liszt performer.
@BlazeKenny you obviously didn't read the comments i made. If you did then you would know my radar for interpretational greatness is not based on the "therms" of tempo. I have 250 words to say why this is an amazing performance and if i wanted i could use 1,000 words. you know nothing about me or my depth as a musician regarding interpretation. if you had class you would write to me personally and i would be happy to discuss it with you. Somehow i think you prefer digs where the masses can see.
@MrNavarra94 can you translate that to English maybe? I am curious to know what you said, but my linguistic skills in foreign language are sub-par at best. :)
Beautifull but somewhat too restrained and without the wild touch which characterizes Liszt's music and life. Trifonoff is at the other extreme and Gabriel Stern may be just right... Worth comparing.
Way to slow and boring. Berezovsky plays it better, the tempo is perfectly led to its peak before the coda. Also, the touch is way tonloud in this version, and you can hear almost no variation of sensibility...
Lacks the last ounce of a driving force, nice lightweight interpretation for an elderly man - there are better performances which have less reflection and more of the essential energy, better listening.
Not Arrau's best Liszt etude, and definitely not the best version of this one. Don't get me wrong, I love his playing on these pieces, but there are much better versions of this particular one.

Arrau had this amazing ability to make Liszt sound like Beethoven, not through technique but through his musicianship.

Czerny is before Liszt.
@@joeldepadua yes
And before Czerny? It was Beethoven....
Beethoven>Czerny>Liszt>Krause>Arrau
You are absolutely right! ... I am sorry for my writing error. But to good connoisseurs, few words.
Regards!

Even with Arrau's warm touch, I can feel the chilling blizzards. An incredible performance.
This peice is dauntingly beautiful. Tragic.😢
This is my favorite one, the last one. I got Arau´s cds of all. I love it.

@brianCIM why is your comment the highest rated one.
fast and slow arent therms that should be used in music
