This video is GOLD, it is useful even in 2024, I was lucky to get across this video and it helped me a lot, 3 months ago i bought a BMW E91 320d and the small panoramic kept getting stuck, it has been such a headache, no one could fix it, but thanks to you man i feel so reliefed and happy, finally working. I appreciate you!
Let’s try not to break off the plastic part like the video (triangular part pointing down), have you ever try to take off the front grass out to avoid overlapping the rear during the resetting progress ? Shoud we hope this will make the rear closing again? Pls rely.. i want to know i should do or not that solution?
@@tungzin It could be solved by lubricating the rails with some vaseline. I haven’t tried it yet but will tomorrow. If that does not work im going to use the solution in the video
@@SLa-hn4xu yes sir. I have take out the all screws to reset ok and notice no fault . But on vented mode again, i saw the process of vented mode for the back roof do not run to the end of process, so that it still not vented enough, so that the back roof still does not low down when closing. Now, no sign antitrap any more. It is ok and i still do not touch to push the vented mode. Let it be. I think not necessary to use vented mode even only the front roof. Important is that no sign antitrap any more , no sound on ignition OK
Hi, I'm a car dealer in California, and i bought and sold ton of X3s and X5s for the past 25 years, But was lucky enough no to run in to any panoramic issue. Nobody would wanna buy a BMW with a stuck panoramic sunroof, So I was lucky to find this video immediately when i started searching and followed the clear instruction, and now my sunroof is fixed, Can't thank you enough for sharing this video, i really really appreciate this. Great job.
August 24th 2021: complete satisfaction as I just completed the roof reset and watched the anti trap control message disappear. My roof operates exactly as this video showed it would. In all it took me about 5mins to pop the clips and trim the offending plastic piece. It then took another minute for the all important reset. How satisfying that was. Thank you sir for providing a clear easy to follow solution to an otherwise painful and expensive situation. Cheers from Auckland, New Zealand!
THANK YOU so much! I just got through getting reamed by the BMW dealer for $1000 for the mechatronic seal to stop the transmission leak and the very next day the panarama roof got stuck with one side closing and the other side not closing leaving the whole thing jammed. I used your part 1 video to get it opened to a state where I could see the parts and then after several attempts to clean/lube it but always having it get jammed, I finally disabled the back vent - thanks for saving me $3,000
Still helping folks in 2021 with this post. Just experienced a big OH NO! moment in my e53. Thought I'd consult the tube first and low and behold the best one handed camera operated tutorial on youtube. Problem is solved, and I am no longer scared of my sunroof. Thanks from all the way downunder in New Zealand.
Moin, I just repaired my sunroof according to your instructions. Everything works perfectly and it only took 30 minutes. I'm so very grateful to you that you're the only one on RUclips who found such an easy solution to this crappy BMW roof! Finally peace. No more errors. And everything works! Thank you thank you thank you! Greetings from Waren (Müritz), Mecklenburg, Germany Oi!
Maybe it is not resetted before or check some broken plastic unit causing fault of rail? Let’s try not to break off the plastic part like the video (triangular part pointing down), have you ever try to take off the front grass out to avoid overlapping the rear during the resetting progress ? Shoud we hope this will make the rear closing again? Pls rely.. i want to know i should do or not that solution?
About to repair my front curtain (a known problem with BMW sunroofs), I discovered the "Wind" mode. So I try and that's when my problems begin: like yours, my front roof won't close because it overlaps the rear. So I dismantled the rear roof then the front one. After research and after removing the upper interior trim (and refitting) I found your video which corresponded exactly to my problem. I followed the modification you made in part 2. I now have a sunroof with the "ventilation" function on the front part which works perfectly. Thank you so much ;)

Awesome video thanks so much! On my 2005 E53 X5 it solved my sunroof issue, but I had to do one other thing which was very simple for the fix to be complete. After I ground off those two pieces on either side I tried to reset the sunroof several times and it wasn't working right. I finally figured out that I had to push those two plastic sliding parts (which I cut the tabs off of) towards the rear of the vehicle. Once I did that then I was able to reset the sunroof and it worked properly. Thanks again!!
Super super helpful solution, it solved the same problem I had. TIP for those who don't have a dremel tool - I used a cutter blame heated with a lighter, it takes a bit more than the dremel for sure, but gets the job done. The only thing actually needed to be cut its the little upside down "shark fin"
7 years later after posting this video and I want to thankyou! I have a 2012 x5 40d and my pan roof got stuck in vent mode, quoted 3 - 4 thousand GBP to fix, I have littery just finished removed the bits on the roof and put the roof in service mode and it's cleared the fault code & the rear bit didn't go up, cheers!
For those asking about what the actual mechanical cause is: To answer that would require dismantling the entire sunroof cassette and that is a lot of work. If you're brave enough to try... good luck! Otherwise, this is the best fix. The back glass only moves in vent mode, so you're not losing much functionality anyway.
As a guy who loves to go the extra step and do it right, even I realized that there is no way I'm taking the entire cassette off just to fix the operation of the rear for venting. I followed the suggestion, used the Dremel on slow speed and it worked great. Thanks for the advice in the video - also saved me $350 on a Chinese rebuild kit which I'm sure would have required removing the cassette as well. Sure would be nice if it could be repaired without having to pull everything out.
On my 07 E91 I was able to make this repair without the use of the allen wrench to manually close the roof, the electronics closed the front sunroof to the point that it was touching the rear sunroof and I was able to proceed with your instructions. I did try to ply the control panel off the interior which proved difficult and in the end unnecessary. I used an oscillating tool to remove the plastic "shark fin" from the plastic sliding piece, very easy. Many thumbs up for discovering this repair!!!
have you ever try to take off the front glass out to avoid overlapping the rear during the resetting progress ? Shoud we hope this will make the rear closing again? Pls rely.. i want to know i should do or not that solution?
Many thanks for the post. Rear section of sunroof on my 05 X3 jammed yesterday and after a couple of quick checks on the Internet, I was sick when seeing quotes in the $2000 range and up. Your fix worked perfectly. Took about 30 minutes. Great info and very detailed. My hat is off to all the you tubers who continue to share their experiences (and wisdom).
Great tutorial. I have a little addition though: you do not necessarily need a Dremel tool (or any expensive power tool). The parts to be cut off are made of pretty brittle plastic and can be quite easily cut with side cutting/diagonal pliers being a bit careful. Works just fine.
you sir are a life saver! i got this car really cheap for resale in an auction. and i realised that the roof was broken, i was at a loss. But i followed this and IT WORKS NOW! CHEERS!
This is incredible! After driving our X3 for a year without an operable sunroof, I finally found your video and tried the solution that you outlined. It worked! My wife is going to be amazed... Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, and especially for taking the time to put together these two fantastic videos! They truly are great !
Nice demo. If I slide those 2 brackets that has to be cut towards the rear, it closes the rear glass. My question is, what actually breaks or disconnects, causing those 2 brackets not to move to the rear again to close the rear glass?
OMG! I JUST went through this SAME scenario Today! Three days ago the Panoramic Moonroof of my E53 X5 got stuck in the Vent position and would NOT close again! I went to the BMW Dealer Service Department and they told me it would cost $2,900 to fix. In the end I paid them $300 to manually close the Moonroof and disconnect the Control Button. So now (at the moment) I no longer have use of my Moonroof! Thanks to this video, I will go back and attempt this adjustment in order to restore operation of My Moonroof!!! Thanks!!!!
Problems with mine yesterday, found your video & put your instructions into action. Fabulous repair within half hour.I owe you my gratitude sir. My regards & many, many thanks.
Great Video, thank you so much, had same problem with my 2016 X5, dealer quoted me $7000+. They manually closed the sunroof and costed me $300. So I had no sunroof. By doing this everything works accept the back tilted.
Could this just be a lubrication problem? I have a e53 x5 and it seems that the rear glass doesn’t go down because there is too much friction on the rails. I was thinking of puttin vaseline on those and moving them by hand to see if that would fix it, if not then I’m too going to disable the rear glass.
Worked!! wouldn't pass inspection in Alberta without it! Also greased the primary tracks, took out the long rubber blinds that hide the internal parts, they were jamming, also the testing works much faster with the car running, as said in this video. I did most of my testing with a battery charger hooked up, but much more voltage with car running!
Bedankt!! Mijn panodak zat vanmorgen echt vast.. Top!
This is kinda fix, but if i want to make it all work, what was the actual problem? what broke? maybe i can find just that piece on junk yard.. thanx for these videos!
Salute to you sir, just purchased a x5 e53 with this issue. However much I liked the double tint just didn't make sense to try and fix it. Great tutorial and mine is all sorted now. Thank you very much you my friend are a legend
Herzlichen Dank aus Deutschland. Endlich jemand der es verständlich und ausführlich erklären kann. Den hinteren Teil habe ich stillgelegt und das Dach funktioniert wieder perfekt. Danke
This video is amazing. Just fixed my moms x3 with these videos. Btw if anyone is wondering leave the clip and the plastic piece out. I might have missed that in the videos but just incase
omg thank you so much one for your video on how to get it closed i was panicking when it locked open i just bought the truck last week and two on the fix worked perfectly on my 2005 x3 my girlfriend can now open the main top no issues now definitely subbed
Thank you very much for this Repair Tutorial. I have the same Problem that my rear Sunroof wont go down. After I looked your Video, i was impressed do to at my own Car. And it works 🥳🥳🥳 Greetings from Germany.
Can I just say thank you , just carried out the mod , and it's completely fixed my sunroof , took no time at all and summer is looking better already , great video , thank you again 👍
Great Video! Helps everyone saving money and fixing the panoramic roof at the same time. I have tried to reset my X5 E70 panroof but my front panel it won`t open, only tilts up and down at the same time with the rear one, but when I press the buton to open the panroof, the front panel is stuck, even after I`ve tried the reset about 20 times. Any sugestion about what could be faulty?

Hi there. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post this video. I've just done this mod to my UK E61 2004 530D and it works a treat!! Really appreciate your time on this.
Super thanks for the video. Just a warning to all those who plan to do it. Be careful with the screw for the manual opening. Mine after a few turns was dead and I had to additionally help with manual force to oben the sun roof. The screw is directly mud...BMW design at its finest
You meant we should not to open the 6 screws for the manual openning the glass off for checking the rails and for resetiing without overlapping the rear during that process of recalibratation?

You awesome guy ,you saved my life and many hours of trying to solve that goddamn pano roof. Everything works absolutely fine now ,except the rear one.😂 Thanks a lot ,you are the best.
I just did this fix on my 2006 323i wagon and it works a treat. You my good man are a genius. Much love from Aus. Does anyone know if this is a long term fix ?
Thanks man, you are awesome for making this video. I wanted to sell my car and just then the roof wouldn't close anymore. I followed your video and now it works again (except for the rear part of course) 😁 Greetings from the Netherlands
Thank you so much, this tutorial helped me fix this completely. I was really worried be cause I had just bought the car second hand and never thought to check the roof. You are a life save thank you again.
Just watched and subbed. Haven't even tried it yet but I swear if this works, I'm sending you a million hugs from Washington whether you want them or not. Thanks man!
That was scary but worked for me so I am really grateful thankyou!.. I don't have a dremel tool but managed with an hack saw blade!...got it fixed just before it started to rain phew!... Thanks again
Thank you my friend. I had same issue and with your detailed info I was able to fix it. It works like a charm now. It was easy only took me 5 minutes each side. Anybody have this problem in Toronto Im willing to help. Many thanks to you.
Wow you helped me so much! I couldn't find anything for this. And I might try to disable the back portion, however I do believe more than that is having a problem
Thank you so much!!! It worked like a charm. The only issue I am facing sometimes is the sun shade is stuck just before it closes and automatically opens again for like 20 santimiters. Good thing is the restart (holding the button for 1.5 min) is fixing it when stuck. Any ideas?
You legend! Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for posting this video! Followed your clear instructions and now my sunroof is working a treat. Just in time for the warm weather. 😁

Worked a treat. Fixed in 10 minutes. Used a power drill with a cutting disc for a quick, clean edge. Thank you!

This definitely helped me! My roof didn't close a couple days ago like this. Thank you so much!👍
Best and most informative video on the web !!! Worked on my 08 X3
i confirm this method really work , disabled rear tilt option , and now reset worked . good job ! :)
Worked great on mine as well, roof works flawlessly now, who cares if the rear roof tilts up. Great fix
Fantastic...fixed my wifes BMW. Thanks to you she thinks I'm a genius!!!! Huge brownie points!!!!
Thank you for the video, i fixed my non working sunroof within 30 mins!!
Just fixed my 2012 x5 3.5 d! Worked perfect! Thankyou from Washington State!
Fantastic video! i just bought my e91 with this fault in the sunroof, amazing fix!
I followed exactly what you did and now is great! This video was the easiest to understand and well explained. Thanks from Jpn

Hi there. Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to post this video. I've just done this mod to my UK E61 2004 530D and it works a treat!! Really appreciate your time on this.
This worked great on our 2005 X3. I used a dremel with a cut-off wheel. It took me about 15 minutes total to do this job. Thanks!
Did it at my 525 d. Now it wokts very well. The biggest THANK YOU and a small Paypal-Donation for your help.
Thank you very much sir! Glad it worked for you 😀
You are a legend! that worked a treat I bought my E53-X5 and the Moon roof has never worked until today that is! thanks
Thank you, problem solved very easily. Maybe someone knows reason why the sunroof fails like that?
Super thanks for the video. Just a warning to all those who plan to do it. Be careful with the screw for the manual opening. Mine after a few turns was dead and I had to additionally help with manual force to oben the sun roof. The screw is directly mud...BMW design at its finest

Thank you very much for saving me 1.800€! Exellent work!
Thank you very much, it happened to me just like in the 1st film, the man who could fix it wanted PLN 100 plus transport to him and thanks to you I did it myself, you are great! If someone didn't have a Dremel, I cut out these triangles with a saw blade. :)
But the car show the roof fault mesage on all time you Ignition On :(
Many thanks for this. I fixed my otherwise non-functioning sunroof yesterday and all is now working, minus he rear section on my x3. Great advice..
Did you fixed?
+James Kerman Glad it worked for you

Thank you for the excellent repair manual for jamming a small part which can be used to lubricate the moving parts. Greetings from Poland
Dit filmpje is alweer even geleden geplaats maar zojuist erg veel aan gehad......alles werkt weer;)! Thanks!!!
nog steeds de enige online ;)
You awesome guy ,you saved my life and many hours of trying to solve that goddamn pano roof.
Everything works absolutely fine now ,except the rear one.😂
Thanks a lot ,you are the best.
Nice VIDEO! I love my BMW and am about to look at a x3 3.0si with this issue. Now I know its a quick fix. Thanks!
Thankyou for your time and effort providing us with huge money saving tip and undue stress of BMW costly repairs and downtime hugely appreciated
