I was born in 77 but 100% remember these! Friends and stuff would have them. Was fascinated with slot car. Got an old 60's book from the library about slot cars and my parents took me to the only local slot car/hobby shop and I got a "real" slot car and raced it when ever they'd take me.
I had the TYCO version of this set called “The Big Detour” in 1979 with the Jam Car. I was 11 years old and remembered the set came with a scrub pad that you had to use to clean the track contacts. It was a constant job to maintain! 😖😖
That’s so cool! Born in 77 but never seen that before much to my disappointment!🤣🤣🤣In the late 80’s I knew someone who had a slot car set that had 2 yellow “Ryder” semi-trailers that I loved growing up! Sadly, living in Australia sometimes had its downfalls! Now everything’s available by clicking a button, still buying toys at 46 though!👌🏻👍🏻🥃🗣💨💨🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Myself, My brother and Dad had this exact set NEW and I'm telling yah it was the most fun and realistic slotless car race on the market. We purchased on clerance for $12 in 1982. You want to use all the straight track to get a good pass because you'll need it before the curves. The key to this. Pass before you get your opponent in the curves because unless side by side if you can pass before the curve or before the Jam Car you got your opponent beat. Lots of fun!
@@Howlinwolfreviews Also, it's easier to pass if you leave a little space between the jam car & your car. When coming off the curve gun it & passing is easier. If you're riding right up against the jam car, you won't have the inertia needed to pass.
I was the same, I once played on TCR in the last week of junior school and I pestered for tcr at Christmas but got scalextric , though my cars did have working headlights.
Ho how you posh kids lived. We couldn’t afford scalextric or a TCR, I got a cheap unbranded one. It only lasted about a hour before his mum was knocking on the door wanting it back.😂
We had alot of fun with these. The CC track was great cause used the CC cars and the tyco tcr..Clean track with 220 grit n wd.Wipe excess oil when done.Does wonders..The CC cars have larger white plastic gear in back know to crack.U can take thin aluminum tape cut n wrap the gear and u get alot more life out of them.Have fun

I just picked up a set from '77 at a garage sale, $30!! Everything seems to be a good condition, but will definitely clean it all up.. ordered new front and back tires, shoes, other parts for the cars from Slot Car Central in Syracuse.. great place to get old TCR parts! Can't wait to get racing again after all these years!!
Wow such memories!! I had the set with the ambulance van ran on its own and the two cars had to drive around it. TCR wow with the trucks and had two 1940 Ford Coupe and a Police car and Ambulance..1976 or 77.
Maan u had the bomb. I remember your set up but i think the last and ultimate commercials on tv and the ultimate were these trucks. They made those last commercials so dramatic.. us kids went crazy over it.. Especially with tv shows like BJ n the Bear, Convoy and other Trucker movies. Im a truck driver now lol .. 4yrs in.. almost slipped my mind
I had the same set! I remember one truck was black with flames, the tiny rubber wheel on each truck that controlled the lane changing got worn out eventually and we could not get parts here in Australia
I still got mine after 40 yrs & i was hoping to get it working again, maybe get my son off the darn tablet! I cleaned tracks, connections, changed rear tires & pick-ups... but cant seem to get it to run continually.... grrrr...
Don't understand how TCR 'went away'. I had a set in my 20s and we'd get drunk and race, "bashin' for cash" as the great Willie T Ribbs once said. It was a hoot! We'd laugh until we were crying! Best ever!

Got one of these for my birthday in '78 or '79. My older (by 15yrs) brother & dad got drunk & destroyed before I even got a chance. But I do remember it being fairly lame.
Pure gold I remember I got one of these for Christmas and then my mother‘s friend worked for the company and got me two more tracks , so we are able to make one gigantic racing track, it was epic ,, 1979 I believe.
I remember it well having used afx slot cars for years...when the ad on tv came out for"total control racing"...slotless cars!!...as a kid i couldnt figure out how they worked.I thought they were so cool but I was 10 by then and I wanted stereo equipment for christmas so I stopped using slot cars..
Odd, the TCR track I had from that era had grey controllers with a black steering wheel instead of a switch to change lanes. You did not steer the car, but turning it to the left or right was the switch.
Used to run a straight section of track then pour rubbing alcohol at the start, light it and did fire burnouts. Brother and I had good times. 82 was good
I had the set, I think it was called "Big Detour". It had the same basic set-up, but the track had a one lane "Detour" making the regular turn, plus the one right hand, almost offramp looking Detour Lane. The Trucks were the same with different color scheme. The Jam Car, was an Ambulance. As you can imagine, the Jam Car would be in the way, and you could Detour taking the offramp. It was a farther distance, but faster than following the Jam Car. The Commercials were Epic!
we used to get a bit of selotape and some sandpaper and tape it to the back of the cars with a little weight to clean the tracks, probably wasn't the best thing to do thinking about it now, lol
I had TYCO/AFX tracks. A few of them. I had always wanted a TCR track but my Dad and Mom said, we got you all of those sets of TYCO tracks, were not getting you another one that's completely different. It stunk but I now see their point. I didn't back then however.
My lil brother and I had a TCR set back in the late 70's. The cars we had were a BMW, and A Porsche with a Chevy Jam Car. Later on, my brother picked up the White Semi like the one in the video and a Chevy Van. I still have the White Semi and parts of the the Porsche and Van. Cool video. I had one of these back in the day. Not this one with the trucks though. I want to say they may have had headlights or glowed or something, too long ago. I do remember going to K-Mart with my allowance many times to get more track when I could afford it. Had quite the set up after awhile. Guess it ended up in a garage sale along the way. The cars would get stuck but I loved it while it worked and I always wondered why it disappeared and then I remembered. Had one similar but with a couple highway signs and you can back the truck up and it would collect little babies and go drop them off at another place and another one scooped little plastic logs into the back of the truck my father got it for me 1979 I was 3 years old best thing I ever had
I know this video is 4 years old, but it happened to pop up in my feed. My dad bought this set for me and my brother for Christmas when we were kids. We were poor and didn't get a lot of toys other than Christmas and birthdays. We used to play with it for hours. We learned to fix them the best we could to keep it running. Funny thing is, I still have it my attic. Never had kids to pass it to, so I kept it all these years. Good memories.
Wish I had that kind of luck.. For $10 it was a steal if any of them ran at all. Especially being that old. I've got the big detour Tyco set that came with the 2 semi trucks, ambulance blocker & 2 Camaros. None of them work.
@@Howlinwolfreviews I think the track & power supply is ok after cleaning all of the connections. I remember the last time it worked, only two of the cars worked. Not sure of the motors are bad or not.
Yeah the big detour is what l had to the van was a dodge l made super big money on that set selling it to a friend of mine he did some tuning on the trucks and we raced them no regrets thou

Maybe pull it from the Attic this Winter and tinker with it? Just a Thought. Thanks for checking in.
Memories ❤
Wish I had that kind of luck.. For $10 it was a steal if any of them ran at all. Especially being that old. I've got the big detour Tyco set that came with the 2 semi trucks, ambulance blocker & 2 Camaros. None of them work.
Sorry to hear that,A little work gets em going again.
@@Howlinwolfreviews I think the track & power supply is ok after cleaning all of the connections. I remember the last time it worked, only two of the cars worked. Not sure of the motors are bad or not.
@@bradwindhorst7010 the easiest way to test a car ,is to put a 9 volt battery across the pick up terminals.
@@Howlinwolfreviews I do remember that trick, since you mentioned it. I will try that. Thanks.
Yeah the big detour is what l had to the van was a dodge l made super big money on that set selling it to a friend of mine he did some tuning on the trucks and we raced them no regrets thou
