Little bit of controversy around filling the oil filter before putting it on because technically u would be putting unfiltered oil directly to the engine lol everyone has opinions about everything just like tightening the filter too tight. (I hate when people do that) bottom line do your oil change how u want to do it don’t listen to everyone in the comments
I have seen both ways, and it is open to preference. Today’s oil technology will leave the bearings, connecting rods, wrist pins, pistons, etc completely coated with oil even when you add a new dry filter. The LPOP on these trucks fills it in seconds. Also, like Don mentioned, the thought of unfiltered oil entering the engine isn’t good either. Any small piece of metal, contaminants can block oil jets or ruin bearings.
What unfiltered oil are you talking about? The new oil?
@@The73Garage talking like you know what you’re saying lol be quiet.
@@IndiansAuto I am your average idiot.
Hi I have been a diesel mechanic since 1976, I have a 1999 F250 7.3 with 146000 mi never seen winter salt, since I live in Canada I take it off the road every fall till spring. I always fill the oil filter with oil when I change it, I have always done that, just think oil pressure comes up quicker to lubricate all the internal moving parts. Enjoy your channel keep up the good work.
Nice video 👍 lucas helps in cold , dry , Start keep the bearing and gears oil
Take a screw driver and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain the oil before u remove it. Helps alot great video
You know what? My oil filter was on so damn tight I drilled a single hole at the bottom of the filter drained it and put the longest screwdriver I could find and finally getting it off. Didn’t even consider that fact that if I didn’t do that there would’ve been 2 quarts of oil in it and make a big mess.
Also don’t worry too much about some moisture on the oil fill cap, if the truck does a lot of short trips where you don’t get up to operating temp you will get moisture accumulation on the cap. So not necessarily a head gasket all the time. Love your videos brother
Thanks for the info, Phil! Appreciate the support!👍🏻
The box on my oil filter said to lube the gasket. In fact a lot gaskets like some sort of lube 😎
I use a Fumoto oil drain cock. Saves a lot of mess. I had worked around a fleet for 25 years that used them .
I’ve seen those before. Do they lock? Always had a fear that they could get knocked open by road debris.
I've never seen a problem, the lever is spring loaded and sits in a notch when closed . And I've always positioned the lever
pointing back. Mine is in a RWD truck so I would never consider driving off road.
I’ve always filled my FL-1995 filter with oil when replacing it to help filling up quicker.
nice work shirt!! awesome video! Frankie for president!!
You know I’m always reppin’! 🤘🏼 We have to stop by the shop soon.
Frankie's brave working on his diesel with a white shirt on, I have yet to master staying clean working on mine lol
7.3l 96% of the time never have rear main seal issues, normally a oil leak from the lifter valley, or valve covers. FYI punch a hole in the filter, that's how I always do it. Lmao u said it as I typed this hahah
This is true, we did forget to mention that they do leak in the valley and run down the back of the engine. HPOP o-rings and related parts from what I have seen can be the culprit!
@@The73Garage ya or the petcock orings start leaking on the fuel/water separator bowl. Pretty rare the rear mains leak
A little food for thought!!! I’d replace all the factory Squeeze clamps on all the radiator hoses!! Mine failed just this past week. 01 with 342000 plus. Miles, put worm gear clamp on. And it crushed the inlet on the radiator! There was just enough remaining to clamp, so it’s giving a week or so to get a new radiator installed. And a great time to flush and clean intercooler.
Good info
I personally use hotshots secret oil additive and man what a difference it makes!! The engine runs quieter and oil takes a bit longer to start turning black! I RECOMMEND IT
Use Archoil AR9100. That works very good.
Have you ever thought about installing a oil bypass filter?
Heard good things about them, do you mean like a separate cooler?
@@The73Garage their not coolers. They take a small amount of oil and run it through a filter thats rated for 2-4 microns. I bought a FS2500 that I'm going to install. They basically super clean the oil.
Wolf heads oil thats made in Pennsylvania or it use to be not sure If it still is.
You dont pre fill your filter?
Lol the age-old debate of prefill. I prefill, not everyone does but it's my way. I think it depends on how clean your oil supply is (drums, filling equipment) to determine if it's wise to do so. But I cannot tell you how many times I've seen someone pop open a fresh bottle of oil & dump it down into a funnel that's full of dirt & trash! Spray clean your funnels folks & keep a glove on the big end--it'll keep out the dirt & junk, especially if you hang them like I do. I also smear a dab of grease on the filter gasket, found it makes filter sticking a non-issue & I never need tools to get 1 off like that.
Nice truck!
I get 25lbs on my 7.3 stock turbo. Show us what that turbo can really do.
are the new style mirrors shaky or how is the quality
They seem to be alright. I think the ones on the truck are Motorcraft. Any cheap after market has the potential to be shaky.
Brandon what have you done with your ccv on your obs.
I have it routed to a vented catch can under the truck.
Can you say which catch can, I've been trying to find one with 3/4 barb fittings. Thanks
@@frankhackett771 yes! It’s a Moroso catch can. You can get them from Summit racing or JEGS. I think I paid $60 for mine.
Thanks a lot Brandon
Any hats left ?
I have a few! Send me an email. Seventhreegarage@gmail.com
So why didn’t you guys put oil in the Oil filter before putting it back in? And why didn’t you change the oil in the Hpump?
Prefill that damn oil filter
You wont notice any difference from that lucas unless its 20 percent of the oil capacity, says it on the bottle, should be 2.5 qts of lucas
ALWAYS fill the oil filter with oil on any diesel. Always.
FOR SURE
Tell that to Caterpillar who specifically warns not to pre-fill in their documentation. Also do that on a Duramax with a horizontally mounted oil filter.
@@straightpipediesel CAT warns against what? What issues come from this? They can't say dont do it, without reasoning.
@@yourmama2299 CAT C-15/C-18 operation and maintenance manual:
"NOTICE
Do not fill the oil filters with oil before installing them. This oil would not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated oil can cause accelerated wear to engine components."
Every manual has the same warning.
FILL the Filter first..........
Should have filled the filter first before installing it will hold about a quart.
Definitely agree!
I use Wix and they hold 2 quarts.
HEUI + Lucas = no bueno
Lucas does make synthetic oil stabilizer for 7.3/6.0 Powerstrokes.
@@cucvfarmer they call for a max of 1 quart of the synthetic stabilizer which is a lot thinner. Even that is pushing it for oil that needs to flow through small orifices at 3000 psi. Not to mention the robbed power and it won't cold start for shit.
Probably not a rear main. Pedestal leak is most common.
Pre-fill the oil filter. Less time of the engine running with zero oil pressure.
Almost positive that Lucas is terrible for HEUI.
Short trips make moisture under the oil caps way more often than headgaskets.
The reason blow by is bad is because in order for the excess exhaust vapors to make it into the oil pan in the quantities that would result in visible amounts of blowby, there must be a damaged piston ring somewhere in the mix. However when talking about 7.3s many of them have a lot of blowby from the factory leading me to believe that the factory engine break in process can result in high blowby when your engine isn’t necessarily damaged.
Nope. The 7.3 is built with a huge second piston ring end gap. It is to reduce flutter on the top ring by increasing the pressure differential by allowing gasses that do leak past the top ring to vent to the crankcase, since rings are held to the cylinder wall by pressure differential. The GM LS1 and LS6 engines are built the same way and have similar people being paranoid about blowby.
25 for a hat.🥴
1st lol
Blackest oil ive ever seen
