Playing Arcane golem on turn 3 ramps your opponent up for what will likely be nothing more than 4 damage. 8 if you're lucky. I don't think a mortal strike for 1 less mana is worth giving them a full mana crystal.

You don't play it on turn 3 but it is a card that costs 3 mana which is very important when you're using it to get a burst lethal. E.g as druid
