Hi guys, I am Alex.
I am an Ukrainian expat who moved to Portugal.
No one in my family ever did any farming, But I discovered that I am very passionate about farming so recently I've purchased this 28 hectares Farm in Central Portugal, with the intention to start a small scale farm raising worms, cattle and sheep.
In this little farm I am also planning to build an off grid home, and be as self sufficient as possible, by growing my own food.
I created this channel to share my journey with the world, The journey of a first generation farmer, that is starting with no prior knowledge and experiences.
That maybe all the mistakes that I will make along this journey, and all the fails maybe will help some of you to learn from my mistake and not make them yourself.
I want to bring value and inspire people who are thinking about farming.
I am not a filmmaker or an editor, I am just a simple guy with a camera.
So if it is interesting to you, subscribe to the channel and you will not miss the upcoming episodes.

Hello guys, Alex here. Just love your intro Alex 😂
I just typed in maintenance for a 550 Ford backhoe on you tube and there are many videos you can learn from, Good luck.
You should contact Alex from Quinta Fonte da Pipa - Portuguese Homestead.. I have no idea if you are close in proximity, but he is a master mechanic and would give advise I think.
Nick from Project Portugal can probably put you in contact with Alex from Quinta Fonte da Pipa
If he can help you and Dad can repay him with building skills/labour when he builds a new farm building in the Autumn/Fall
Good idea!
The backhoe sounds good, but shame on the man who sold it to you and didn't tell you about any problems he was having with it. She just need some tender loving care..Fix her wirings, give her fluids and grease her up . Give her a good fine tuning up.. Google the problems to see what would be the fix and how to fix her. I know you and your dad can overcome the problems and fix them. It was good to see your dad smiling and laughing , you both have wonderful smiles. I pray that all goes well for you both .. as the song goes... It's just another brick in the wall... Y'all got this!
Thanks for the shout out Alex, well done on getting the excavator out.
You both looked so happy
Hi Nick and Andrea,
You are most welcome!
It was a great moment for us ))
You could contact Alex from Quinta Fonte da Pipa. He is an excellent mechanic and very knowledgable
hello Alex, hello dad, good job solving the digger issues, great to see how happy dad was when it worked out. greetings from the Netherlands
Hi Arnold,
Hahaha yeah, we were very delighted ))
This is sweet watching you and your Dad sort things out together on this project 😍 I’m sure your Ford tractor will be good if you treat it with love ❤️🏴
Whew! What an adventure. I didn't realise I was holding my breath until Dad got the digger unstuck and I let out a huge sigh of relief. :)
Haha, yeah it was quiet a moment ))
The fact that you and your dad were laughing while riding on the tractor inthe midst of the fiasco means you will go far!! Although you might not be mechanics you are both logical problem solvers, again a successful trait! And tenacity. Well done.
Hugs from 🇨🇦
write to Ford and try to get a manual for the excavator and perhaps instructions on lubricating it and trouble shooting problems.
The ball end of the selector rod is worn. This a common issue where site machines are constantly shifting from forward to reverse and vice-versa. A build up of weld on the ball end and then grinding into shape will help but not be a permanent fix. Maybe your friends at Project Portugal would be able to assist.
You should ask youtuber "farmer for fun" he knows all the right people to do jobs properly there in Portugal
They sold it for a reason. You will have to learn mechanical issues. You Tube University.
I love seeing you building a new life with your parents. When do we get to see Mom?
Get the big bar into the step and into the ground and pull towards you. as you can use the ground as a pivot point and make the step better
I think people all over the world has formed a community watching the young and not so young creating a new life in Central Portugal. Frankie on the road had a lot of problems with their vehicles.Maybe they know of somebody to help you.
Good luck from South Africa.
Thank you for the suggestion Maritjie, Appreciate it very much!!
Nick and Andrea are a very kind couple. Yes ,you will learn a lot from them.
Hi Lorraine,
They are indeed amazing people.
You should check ALL fluid levels! Get a service manual for the backhoe, drain the transmission and feel old fluid for metal fillings or bits. GREASE ALL THE GREASE SERTS ,LOOK FOR WARN OR CRACKED HOSES Its a place to start.
Replace the shifter the end ball is wore off. Your dad was correct. Filters and grease joints...lots of work life still in that beast.thanks for the vid.👨🌾🚜👨🌾
Dad is a smart man!
Have a word with Alex at ruclips.net/user/FontedaPipaPortugueseFarmLife he may be able to advise on the gear box problem.
Hey Alex, nice shout out to Nick and Andrea! I actually found your channel from their video visiting your farm.
Hi Christopher,
Yeah Nick And Andrea are amazing people, That's the least I could do.
My father was an excavator for 60 years and had the best funny stories about mishaps with the machinery. You new toy will serve you well if you feed him fluids and grease regularly. At least you only got stuck you didn’t lose it on the way home like my father lost a bulldozer that slid off the trailer around a corner.
ohhhh man, that is both funny and sad :D
I always watch Nick and Andrea. They will help you out and give you great advice. You and your dad are so good. You're braver than most people.
Hi Isabell,
Yeah Nick and Andrea are awesome!
Thank you for the support 🙏
Alex you were to close to the wall when you were digging you should be at nearly full reach. The gear levers can be welded and the ball on the ends ground or milled in an engineering shop. Regards from Billy in South Africa
Yes, Nick and Andrea have big 💕
Hi Alex and Papa. Looks like you were stuck between a rock and a hard place! Well done from the Aussies on buying the digger and doing it’s 1st service.
I am in awe of how you never let set bcks get you down and always happy andsmiling.lol.
Thank you Frank ))
I will tell the story one day, I always forget :D
Watching you and your dad getting over the hurdles of the farm, warms my heart.
Hi Gem, Thank you )))
Hiya Alex. Great tractor. Fluids, filters and check to make sure no condensation in the fuel. On RUclips...M&MS CLASSIC TRCTOR
Video titled....Old Tractor Shift Problems...Dec 20, 2020. He gives a very nice overview of how the shifting mechanisms work and what to look for inside the upper shifting plates of various tractors. Please please get a starter button for that beast. Would be terrible if that (cranking wire) sparked while working and started a fire. Good luck and thanks for all the work your doing on your channel!!!
Looks like the key switch is stuck in the "Crank" position or completely bypassed and some genius "solved" that problem by unhooking the wire going to the key switch. I'd definitely look into that, even if fixing the issue takes the fun out of starting the digger. I'm an electrician by trade (originally) and I definitely don't like sparks!
check the gear lock pin under slider.
Thank you!
But could you please explain what is the slider? 😅
Vocês são pouco doidos são!!!! Good job
Hahaha ))
Contact Luke and Sarah’s off-grid life they might know of a mechanic. They know Nick.
Realistically you have to expect possible issues with used items. The first phase is discovering the problems then educating yourself to fix them! Once you become familiar with them and learn how to fix them you can operate and maintain this equipment to your good use . I know you and your father realized that and were willing to face the challenges. Keep up the good work !
Hi Bonnie,
Thank you for the support!
You are absolutely right, in everything that you said!
Thank you for the wonderful and inspiring comment,
Keep being awesome!
Haha... I was whoooping and laughing with you and your dad! Really well done to both of you!! You really need a huge fog horn on that tractor now..lol...it'll be so helpful on the land an can also carry heavy stones that you might find and need to dig out of the ground.
Hahahha Fog Horn, That's hillarious :D
Yeah I believe the digger will be a big help around the farm overall.
Another...holding my breath episode, it was so great to see your smiles and and hear your cheers!!!
There are tractor people on RUclips, maybe you can find some channels to learn or get advice.
We call it the University of RUclips!!!
Hi Aunty Tutu,
Haha yeah another holding the breath moment, I love how life is amazing that way ))
Thank you for the support and suggestions, I appreciate it very much!!
Awesome well done the two of you!!! Very exciting and so pleased that you "rocked it" guys👏👏👏👍😅😅😅🥰
Hi Anita,
Thank you very much!!
You and your Dad did an excellent job of getting the excavator moving given that you are both inexperienced. Great job. I hope someone can guide you with the repairs needed.
Hi Anna,
Thank you very much for the support 🙏
That’s the machine you will need for digging the pool and also all the other projects like moving your heavy stones around the property you needed it last week to pick up those heavy stones for the wall 👍this will be a game changer for you and your dad also it will help Clean your land even dig you a pond for your ducks and also wildlife and also for your heavy Beams for the rooftop there are so many uses for this machine it will pay for itself that’s a good investment you can also build your road that you need on your property and also you can do other jobs for other people and make money with this machine 👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
Hi John,
You are absolutely right in everything you said.
All those reasons are exactly the reasons we got it in the first place :)
Thank you for your support, I appreciate it very much!!
Alex I watched another RUclips he had the same problem your had with your Tractor it was a pen that went through the shaft that’s stopping it from shifting The pen was broken and his name is also Alex he’s also welder iMechanic a builder I don’t know where you live but he lives in Fundao somewhere around you maybe his RUclips channel name is Quinta Fonta da Pipa Portuguese. Homestead Reach out to Alex he’s a great guy who’s willing to help with anything he pretty much fixes everything from Tractor’s cars you name it good luck Alex Or you can reach out to him his named Joseph who’s willing to help with anything any contractor or any problems in help finding anything his RUclips channels name farmer for fun he in Beira baixa👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
@@johnpierce2390 Thank you very much John for the suggestion, and your will a desire to help me.
I am forever thankful, Keep being awesome!!
Great job Alex can you do a video of around the land and tell us about it please 😺
Hi Carole,
Yeah I have some kind of a property tour planned ))
I would be nervous about buying and running equipment, I think you are brave and you will learn, it takes time . You and your father are following your dreams ! Bravo ❣️❣️❣️
Yeah we were nervous too,
But we are not afraid of challenges, we welcome them :)
put it in neutral drag it back using the bucket
On the topic of excavation, I've been thinking that I would lower the floor level of the ground floor bedroom to give extra head height. Going down one or two steps would make a big difference. Also adding a low level attic window above the top bedroom (going from the ridge to the front wall) would give extra head height in the top bedroom. Plus light.
That was my thought trouble is that the bedrock is right there so jackhammer job I die project had same issue 👍❤️❤️❤️🙏
As one reply on here has stated engineer / fitter turner could make a new one on a lathe or braising then grind to restore the flange as lack of grease has worn it out , I watch”sone farms “ American farmers on you tube and they grease their machinery near every use , and “terminator “looks like it needs attention for longevity , it’s funny when you whooped it up having escaped the perils of horse n cart laneways , take it easy till you know it’s capabilities another channel has issues with their mini excavator Luke and Sarah’s , he is ex Aussie sarah exotic accent and a fantastic animal trainer nick and Andrea know them give them a buzz . the expat community there is many and share services with other newbies to Portugal . Things like kuni pigs , bees , chickens etc helping harvest olives, to general social support bbq’s /drinks great vid happy days , you are the first channel not to be struggling with the heat atm cheers Alex & pop , Angella 👍❤️❤️❤️🙏
There sure is an amazing RUclips community there
Alex, Do you know that the big yellow flowers at 21:36 (and shown before) are highly poisonous and spread like crazy? Please take care that Angelica doesn't eat them. In german it's called Jakobskreuzkraut, please Google that to keep your sweet sheep safe.
Good job on getting the excavator free!
Hi Flower,
Thank you for warning me, I will keep her off of it.
@@AlexLukachina
Good! If you can manage to rip some of the plants out or cut them down before the seeds come out, burn them or put them in the wastebi n, never in the compost pile. And wear gloves please.
You're doing a great Job with the ruin, I like watching your videos!
Please try Lance at Bundy Bears shed he is a great mechanic on old machinery tractors I think he might be able to give you some advise 👍
Hi Alex. You could talk to neighbours about the tractor. They'll have knowledge of good mechanics locally, or know something themselves.
It might be worth talking to the chap from quinta fonte de pippa, he seems to be very good at the mechanics and also appears to be a really nice bloke.
You can use the excavator as a crane or the scaffolding now.
Haha yeah ))
Yes I call it embarrassingly funny and I’m glad you were able to laugh about it. Things happen and it’s all part of off grid living and homesteading
Yeah David, That's life ))
love your dads face and celebrations
Haha yeah that was a great moment ))
Get in touch with Alex from 'Quinta fonte da Pipa' channel .
Will do 👍
Thank you for the suggestion ))
Yes I agree he has some great old machines and a wealth of knowledge
You have diagnosed the gear lever problem correctly so now you have to try and source replacements.
Any attempt at repairing the levers would only be a temporary fix and a last resort.
Stay safe.
Please don't EVER go under any bucket unless it is supported. Don't need you to become a statistic.
Keep these videos coming., and Have a great day.
Hi John,
Noted, Thank you very much!
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you guys, Ford is a good machine, The only help i can give is look to Andrew Camarata on you tube he has load's of this machines and he is working with them and he repairs everything him self.
Aww so excited for you when you got the digger through … well done guys 👍😆
Haha thank you ))
Great job! You learn something new every day and problem solve! That can only be a good thing.
Nick/Andrea to the rescue. Nick is the best. He lives by the golden rule. You will succeed at what ever you attempt.
The way to your farm is realy sooo tricky but a great job. Respect 👍👍👍
Looks good and he is yellow a sunnyboy🌞😀. Great it will be so much easier by a lot of work. Congrats
Of course! A game changer. Wow!!!
Great job, you guys are very handy 👍
Hi Alex
The Backhoe will make your life a lot easier once she’s running ok
Can’t wait to see what crazy stuff you and your dad can do with it
👍
Hi PK,
Yeah I believe so too,
Haha we will see ))
I think it was a great idea! So many uses on a farm like yours and during the renovation :)
Totally!
In the USA the word FORD stands for Fix Or Repair Dailey .
Just joking, Fords can be a good product. 🤔
I hope it is for you.
wow, take me, I will work in your farm.
Lo arreglaremos y será de mucha ayuda para vuestra obra!!!
Hi Concha,
Yes I believe so too!
Hi Alex and father, great to see how you overcome all these challenges; such an adventure. Can't wait to see you fix this tractor/excavator.
Hello, Alex and dad! Your channel is an inspiration. Congrats from Brazil !!
Thank you very much Filomena!
Hi Alex Nice olive trees good work
Daily Renting should have been a better option than buying. Now you know.
Alex ...no problems only solutions.....
Hi Paul,
I cannot agree more.
Well done that was a BIG job ......roads are very like Ireland 🇮🇪 ☘☘☘ Good luck
You should change engine oil, fill up radiator, hydrolic fluid
Hi Hoang,
Thank you for the information!
Hi Alex and Dad. You have a good working relationship....the digger un sticking was a triumph, well done. New gear box.......or stick..... You do need this digger for the extra mussel to get stuff done. It's very hot so stay hydrated glad to see the red umbrella out, it will be a staple requirement this summer. Stay safe and hydrated.
Hi Helen,
Thank you for the support!!
Yeah I believe so too, that digger will indeed help us alot.
Thank you for caring for us, We do our best to stay hydrated :)
Good luck guys 👍👍👍👍💕🕊
Thank you HolyMoly 🙏
Less likely to get stolen lol
Good job! Congrats:-)
I was thinking the same thing with the ignition being like that ))
Hello Alex!😀
Hi Duarte ))
Alex, tienes un padre todo terreno👍
Hahah, thank you Olga ))
This will save you time and make life easier and faster. I believe you can also buy attachment’s
Hi David,
Yeah I believe so too.
I'm wondering if you could clean the ball with a sovent or degreaser, weld up some weldsaroung the end ball and use a grinder and file to reshape the ball end you need on the shifter. Cheap stick welder at the Maxmat or other store. Or bring the shifter to Nick and Andrea, I think he has a welder.
Make poliurethan bushing for the end of the stick, make a pin on the end of the stick to prevent it from coming off.In the first place measure the diametar of the hole where stick lies to get the right proportions.
An interesting purchase. Depending on how much you paid for it it'll either be a fun and useful toy or a bottomless expense pit. On our finca, I did the maths and for me it is a no-brainer to hire a pro + machine when I need them... it's amazing how much they can do in one day if you get yourself organised and you don't have to worry about the time, hassle and expense of keeping an an old machine operating. That said, enjoy your new toy... for as long as it lasts! 😉😄
Alex, add a dormer roof in in cottage. It will give you more space and light. Use the famously known telhado de mansarda
Great job finally getting the excavator out of that :)
Haha thank you ))
Sounds like you & your dad will have to do some online reading & video watching to learn some new skills. You might consider throwing small barbecues sometime, if you can before another problem arises, & invite expats in the area, RUclipsrs. If they have ongoing projects, volunteer to help them a few hours to build up good will. Also, another barbecue to invite Portuguese neighbors. I think it's invaluable to build connections. Also, good that your videos are almost caught up to present time so you can get more timely video comment advice.
Hi B Fox,
Yeah I think we will need to do alot of that reading :D
And Funny you should say that, This morning I was literally thinking about the same thing, To make some kind of a barbecue party for the Expats here,
Because one of my main goals with this channel, is that I want to make a healthy community of expats and youtubers, who will help each other, and lift each other up.
So thank you for the amazing suggestion!
@@AlexLukachina BBQ's are banned in fire season
@@bedlam8159 I never said I will do it now.
I wanted to say in the previous comment that I am planning something after the fire seasons ends, But didn't know it would be necessary.
But yeah, If I would make a BBQ like that, It would be after the fire season.
@@AlexLukachina OK it came over as if you were planning it soon to help with making contacts....I didn't want to see you arrested by the GNR!!!!

Let's go

Thank you brother.
Use the backhoe to dragg the excavator back
I was seeing that you had to dismantle the backhoe and load it piece by piece to your farm 😃😁😆😆. Well done and good job guys!
Haha Marisa,
Imagine... :D
That would be fun ))
Hello Alex will you be getting the wiring looked at fit a ket switch the digger is a fantastic machine many jobs you can do with it money well spent
The gear stick might be worn may be some one can build it up with weld and re shape i would clean the gear stick with kerosene and around the top plate where you unbolted the gear stick also theres a air filter that uses oil that might need looking at awesome videos you and your Dad are a great team
Winner, Winner, Winner’s.👏 Hi from Texas.🇺🇸🇵🇹
Haha, thank you Rachel ))
Hello from Nova Scotia! Great job getting the excavator un stuck. Maybe check with quinta fonta pipa (youtube) he fixes alot of his machinery. Maybe he can direct you. 🙂👍👍
We call them backhoes here in the states. Excavators are a different machine

Hi Alex, when r u making a drone shot 😊 . Excited to see an areal footage
First need to save for one 🤣

Hi Pete,
Thank you very much for the care and concern, I appreciate it very much!
We are okay, Gladly the fires haven’t got to us.
Phew! Take care.

Good idea bro
Hi Alex remember to grease all the moving parts...
