Back in about 1974, the Quad City Fire Dept. on the Iowa/Illinois came down to southeast IL to pick up a surplus Snorkel firetruck. The clutch cylinder leaked down on it and their driver did not have the airbrakes released when that big diesel engine engaged and twisted a U-Joint into pieces. We pulled it up to our dealership and located a driveline company down in the bottom of Indiana that could rebuild the shaft. Being it was going to take a few days we worked out a deal where I would deliver it on a Saturday to the Coal City FD. We left on a Thursday and stopped to visit an old friend in Rantoul, IL. When we were passing the main gate of Chanute AFB the clutch decided not to disengage and we were stuck in the middle of the entrance. After spending the night at our friend's house we got back on the road. Like your truck, we were grossly overloaded on the rear axles and there was a weigh station on I-74 west of Bloomington, IL. Having hauled many pieces of heavy equipment from Peoria I knew that we could go north from Bloomington to El Paso, IL, and take 24 west to the north side of Peoria. When we were close to Peoria we had to pass through Washington, IL. We got to the east side of Washington and a cop saw us. He immediately turned around passed us, turned his red lights on, and motioned for us to follow. We did. We would have loved to see his face when we got to the west side of Washington and he pulled over and let us travel on. On the side of the snorkel boom, it said in big letters "JOB CORPS, POLAND SPRINGS, MAINE."

Pierce is quality. The Detroit is a bonus. Try climbing it with a 20 lbs on your back and when you get to the top you lean back and look straight-up. That’s fun.
If not already mentioned, Pierce is a Oshkosh company. That is a Smeal aerial, Pierce tried to buy them out. When they refused, Pierce reversed engineered their aerials making enough changes to avoid trademark issues and now builds their own aerial. The windshields are from a Ford CL9000 cabover tractor. Pierce also had a deal with Detroit Diesel.
Huh. I worked for Smeal when this was made. Pierce did not try to buy Smeal. Smeal produced a newer product and offered it to Pierce in the form of an 85' aerial platform. Pierce already had a platform supplier and declined to buy it so Smeal went national, first introducing the 85' aerial platform at the Baltimore Firehouse Expo and then following it up with a 100' platform as well as an entire line of aerial ladders on their "excalibur" design. During this period, we still sold aerials to Pierce as they internally developed their aerial products. It could have been an acrimonious relationship but, Smeal continued to supply Pierce with products and support for everything we supplied Pierce. Which really pissed off Smeal Dealers who lobbied heavily for the parts sales to go through them. But, Donald Smeal had given his word to Pierce that he would do so and that was that. I personally heard Delwin Smeal, the president, tell one of the dealers that if he expected the company to "make my dad a liar", he was selling the wrong product because that was not how Smeals do business. This was all long before Oshkosh owned Pierce as it happened in the early '90s. Smeal was eventually bought by Spartan on their second try. Their first try to buy by Spartan ended because John Sztykiel turned out to be as much of a putz as the afore mentioned dealer.
The older I get the less I like heights. I think I have worked around heavy equipment too much of my life. For some reason I can smell diesel. WTH. Nice looking piece of equipment. Brings a whole level of respect to our First Line Responders, above what I already had for them. Thanks for sharing.
Clint, the little oil tank with the dipstick on the passenger side pump panel is primer oil to pull a prime on the pump. It uses the oil to seal the primer pump vanes. New apparatus doesn’t use oil since it blows right onto the ground.
Fire Com box was for headsets, comms between FF’s. The driver position probably quick connect plug also used at pump panel. Weight 62-63k loaded (assume 300 g or so water) plus rest of equipment. Newer would be even heavier.
