This album made them my favorite band and they’ve maintained that position despite the fact that I haven’t loved their last 3 albums. Art of Drowning is great. Black Sails is great. But Sing the Sorrow is flawless.

Didn't think I'd ever see a full review of this album! Time to bring out the pop corn and reminisce about the 20 years of sorrow show I attended last year. It was insane seeing this album being played in it's entirety.

you need to listen to The Art of Drowning (2000) its the perfect blend between their previous more punk-hardcore punk albums and the next more emo scene albums and sound and its their best also

Was never into AFI - I’m still not - but this album from front to back is incredible and better than what the majority of my favorite bands have ever been able to put out

As an AFI fan, this is the end for me. Like a lot of Sabbath and Metallica fans who only acknowledge the first 4 albums, I only like AFI through this album. From then on, they got a little too gothy for me. And not in a Cure direction, which I would have also like lol

There's a lot to unpack with this album. This was their major label debut, as their 5 albums before it were in an Indy label. This was also a pretty drastic change to their sound and Davey's singing style. Something to understand about AFI is that they don't stay in one genre, the catalog has so many different styles and has something for everyone. They are my favorite band and have been since 96.

I think this is probably the best choice you could have made, but AFI is such an interesting band... They've reinvented themselves so many different times. If you go further back in their catalog you're going to hear like skate punk kind of music and then go later on you get more post rock kind of music and they've kind of done everything in between, but they started out in the punk and hardcore scene.

  • @allanLJoseph
    @allanLJoseph 9 дней назад +1

Bruh imagine saying they sound like they took pieces from MCR or that trash fallout boy when A.F.I. Formed in 1991😂 and had like 6 albums before this one. This marked a notable style evolution. They had been more punk rock/chant core before this.

  • @sapphiresoul327
    @sapphiresoul327 Месяц назад +3

Nah bro afi is the shit I love the hardcore sound cant beat it they literally have like eight hardcore albums.there newer albums may not be hardcore anymore but it doesn't change the fact that they put out some goat hardcore shit. but we can't be mad at them for not wanting to do the same f****** thing every other year for 30 years. Does have a very distinct voice but I actually love it

Managed to see them live this past summer - been a fan since 2006. They're a great live band, lots of energy. A lot of the fans I come across tend to only like certain eras or albums, but I find I enjoy all their stuff. With the range of sounds they've pursued, there's an AFI song for almost every occasion. (Also been enjoying Davey and Jade's Blaqk Audio electronica project as well.)

  • @emperordraygon

So the thing about AFI is that their music constantly is changing. The first two albums (Answer That and Stay Fashionable and Very Proud of Ya) were skate punk, they got way more hardcore on the next three (Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, Black Sails in the Sunset, and The Art of Drowning), more into post-hardcore on the following two (Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground), Crash Love lost a lot of fans with a more pop sounding alt rock, and after that they went more goth rock/new wave/post-punk (Burials, AFI, and Bodies). They gain and lose fans over time and some love or hate different eras of the band more or less.

I was absolutely an emo kid (still am sometimes 😂). Who f*vied with the heaviest of metals to the darkest of industrial to the saddest of the emo. Throw some ska, punk and alternative in there and you never know where my playlists will go. 😂

I mean honestly this album was a pretty big departure from their previous era
    Not complaining
    Because this album fucks
But it’s a good bit different to what they had released before
And in truth this is probably their 3rd complete stylistic era.
It’s at the very very least their 2nd.
In my humble opinion, Black Sails/All Hallows EP is AFI at its best, most fun and most enjoyable.
    But good reaction, dude.
    Much appreciated.

I hate to say it, but I think this was the moment they were kind of "scene" band. I really enjoyed this record much more than the one after.
I know what you mean by "scene" and looking back it was influenced by so many more things that weren't aesthetically punk, and went into things like industrial, post rock, and went further than just music. Though I hated it at the time, it certainly was a cultural movement of alternative culture that including youth, and early internet culture, and visual culture that included anime, comics, and gothic art.
Listening to it again in this video it reminded me of the slivers of sounds on records passed that definitely make their way into how they developed into this iteration of AFI.
If you're gonna do more with this band, and keep within the aesthetics of Punk/hardcore. I would suggest Black Sails In The Sunset, Art of Drowning, and Burials.

Very Proud of ya - Skate punk
Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes - Melodic hardcore
Black Sails in the Sunset - Goth/horror punk
The Art of Drowning - horror punk
    Sing The Sorrow - Goth/"emo"
    December Underground - Goth/"emo"
    Crash Love - post hardcore
    Burials - Goth
Self Titled "the blood album" - post hardcore
Bodies - post hardcore (more along the lines of Joy Division and others from the 80's)

    • @King_of_Sofa
