シリーズ「ザ・メイキング」。身近な製品がどのような技術を使ってつくられていくのかを追い、モノの成り立ちと科学技術の関わりを伝えます。今回は、「長胴太鼓」。アフリカから輸入された巨大な唐木をチェーンソーで削り見事に丸くします。その後5年ほどゆっくり乾燥させることで、完成後200年も300年も変形しない胴ができます。革は牛革を使い、ロープで引っ張りながら、人の重みでのばしていきます。

胴内部の彫刻を初めて見ました。樹齢を重ねた素晴らしい原料から、油分を抜く乾燥工程、加工まで手間と時間をかけた芸術品ですね。

これを機械一つ使わずに手作業だけで作っていた昔の人たちに脱帽。
I lived in Japan as a missionary for some years and attended every taiko concert I could find. A friend took me to a taiko factory one time and I got to meet a famous female drummer there. She had injured her arm so could not play until healed . With a translator she was most interesting to talk with. Sadly, the owners of the place were very proprietary and would not allow me to see how the drums were made. I was able to see the tree trunks and the finished products. All this was one of the high points of my time in this beautiful country. I still wish to thank all the fine people who I talked to for all the information they provided me. Me, being a wood-worker, was fascinated with the dedication and attention to detail the craftsmen showed in the completed drums.
I attended a taiko concert where most of the drums were at least 4ft. across. There were several that were larger than that. I sat in a chair about 300 + ft. from the performers. When the largest drums were struck, the vibrations traveled across the ground and made my chest also vibrated. It was marvelous.

The every little detail of what they have to do to get the drum done the wait for the wood to dry slowly and all cuts off from chisels and the way they work the skin ready and tuning the drum is a job that takes years to accomplish and the knowledge and skills that they need to have but I think that they have to work on their self discipline and patience to get the drum perfected and sounding perfect

太鼓は大きな木をくりぬいて作るとは知りませんでした．私は樽みたいに木を丸くつないで筒にすると思っていました．これだと量産は出来ませんね．手間もかかり値段も高いでしょうね．大切に扱いたいですね．祭りでは大太鼓が気持ちよく響き楽しいです．大変勉強になりました．

切り落とした破片は樹皮部分もそのまま活かして、テーブルの天板やオブジェ等に再利用できそう。フォークリフトの体当たり(笑)でくりぬいた巨大な円柱も何かいい使い道がありそう。小ぶりな太鼓の胴に使えないのかな？

These workers were using power tools and heavy machinery and even then it took a lot of time and effort to make. Imagine how much time and effort it would've taken to make one of these back in ye olde days with ye olde tools.

2) The wood was long. How did his chainsaw go deep enough? The wood is like 4 times the length of his chain saw.

The drum making workers cut the wood from the both sides using the chain saw. There might be a 'special long' chainsaw which is not shown in the video used to saw through the wood. The workers work with patience and careful attention to quality. That's why they were able to make a perfect circle. I cant believe the size of that tree, amazing craftmanship its fascinating to watch , although Id like to see how they were traditionally made.
Can anyone tell me the type of tree they use I'd love to see one alive ? Also do they continue making smaller and smaller drums from the remaining core ? its so cool
I'm pretty sure there aren't that many species of trees grow that big.
probably sequoia or related species.

The stupid way that I (an idiot) would make it is actually how they make them. That is one big tree, and there appears to be no big shortcut. Amazingly skilled work, cant believe it didnt come out wrong.

Japanese has so many wonderful cultural crafts that are beautiful. They have much to be proud for. Living in America we do not have culture that is expressed in beautiful object. If we can all just get along together in America I guess that is as good as we can expect.

植林して、でっかい太い木を育てないとね。
太い木はいくらでもあるのですが、伐採資材や伐採した木を運ぶ道路を作らないとなりません。
運ぶのに都合のいい場所の大木が品薄なのです。
Talk about beating your drum. If they used a giant bandsaw, they could have less wastage, more tabletops, planks and other furniture made from the slabs they cut from the log, and the center much bigger and cleaner. Then they could state they have the worlds largest bandsaw.
削り取るのではなく、きちんと丸く切ったということは
くり抜いた木でも太鼓作るのかなー
