I was fortunate to have known Jorge on a first name basis and also to have been to a drum making session he led at the school my auntie worked at. I had very recently taken the initiative to gather some materials and make drums myself. It was totally random to stumble upon this video but also a strange blessing, it was like in a way Jorge was helping. With that and some help from a friend, we made 12 drums. Huychqa siem and mitakuye oyasin to the late Jorge Lewis.
oh no did he pass away? I was so looking forward to meeting him,he was a master craftsman,I made my first drum watching him!
T
Made my first drum using this tutorial. Excellent results! I made a 20" Elk hide drum. It has a beautiful, rich sound.
Were did you get your drum ring from?
Impressive. craftsmanship is very cool.
Jorge- Thank you for this important and detailed video! We made our first drum using your video as a guide. The drum is a 16” elk hide drum. Absolutely beautiful sound and we are now preparing to paint it and gift it to others. We are taiko drum players and makers -but this work unfolds differently. No car jacks involved to tighten the skin! Thank you for your knowledge and guidance.
Don't know what inspired me to watch this but after watching I'm afraid to watch another documentary, cuz this is how they all suppose to be, this is so touching it makes me feel I'm not the only one who love every opportunity I get I life just to get up in the mornings
Same here... It's Magic... Good Medicine... Big Medicine also.. The drum Speaks though the wind..
Excellent knowledge you have passed on to me. Thank you. I intend to share this with my children as I make my own drum with prayer and explanation why the importance to do so.

Thank you for this lesson. I just finished my first hand drum thanks to your instruction. It is for my brother who will use it for sweat which is a big part of his sobriety. Think I'm going to make him another for a spare. Lol! Hope you get many blessings in return from your teachings.

Best and by far my favorite drum making tutorial I have seen. Bless your skill and knowledge my brother.
Great video! I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to make a drum. She had a kit without instructions so this video is perfect. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing! I made my first drum and it feels wonderful!!!
as a drummaker I highly recommend this drummakingmethod as it keeps the skin much better in place compared to other methods; I learned it with an uneven set of holes but they both work great!
Hi. Can you please tell me a good place to get supplies?
Beautiful, a Condor send his regards.
Great video and excellent instructions. The drum sounds great.

Thank you from Germany
Awesome
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you very much. Blessings...
thank you for the vid ... I wish to make one. though my family history I discovered the I'm 3/4 Norwegian. so that's the route I'm taking I'm my spiritual path. ...thank you
lots of drums are made in Norway nowadays..long tradition from the samis meets old Norrøn traditon...indian knowledge was also known here....longlong time ago
Great lesson! Thank you!! \o/
awesome video.
I've enjoyed the tutorial and learned a lot but I love the words about energy (listen about minute 13) thanks a lot
Thank you!
Thank and your family Two Eagle for the passing of knowledge. I've looked at many drums and wondered what the manual process was. I make a lot of different things so I'm not lost on the spirit part, but lacing a drum always puzzled me. 🦉
wonderful
Thank you for showbink how to do it!
Excellent video! Im surprised your able to do that drum with what looks like a very sore thumb, i hope to make one ..one day.
Wow, I just bought my first Shaman Drum 16"x 2", tunable goatskin head, mulberry frame, includes leather beater and tuning tool. I am so excited to get it Saturday. I wanted to hear them and stumbled upon your tutorial, this was so touching. I am 30 percent Cherokee, and am doing some healing music with the drum and Native American flute. I would love to try to make a drum like this. I don't know where I"d get a hide to use or the rims, since I live in Colorado maybe buffalo ? Anyone know ? Thanks again for keeping the Spirit of drum making alive. I sure will be looking at my drum differently when I get it.
Help please, iv been accused of cultural appropriation for wanting to make myself a drum by following this wonderful tutorial. Jorge is happy to share this precious knowledge from his ancestors for us to follow. I want to come from a place of honor, gratitude and respect and imbue my drum with this energy.
Gran artesano.
I have started making my frames for 18 inch drums. Although this method of mounting the hide is more labor intensive, it offers a more symmetrical tightening of the skin.
Very nice instruction and filming. Thank you for passing on your traditions. What’s a good source for buying the wooden hoops and hide?
😍😍😍
You must feel incredibly honored, for the name two eagles, there was a chief by the name of two eagles, from ojibwe
Thank you greatly for sharing this wisdom with us all. If possible can you say a good place to get supplies?
Gr88888 tutorial.
What size hole punch are you using? 3/16? I just want to buy size needed, not a whole set.
I made a drum using a similar design. I'm in subtropical Queensland, Australia and my drum loses all it's tension on cold days. Any advice how I can counteract this with my next one or is this just something that happens in warm humid areas? It's fine if I put it in the sun before playing or lay it on the heater/hold it near the fire. I know of other people around here with similar issues but they didn't make their drum and don't know either.
It's normal for a drum to go a little flat cold. Keep it covered when you aren't using it. That will keep it from fluctuations in temperature. If it's really bad you might wanna restring it. Get new string if you do this as old string is prone to breaking.
Hi:
I liked the video, I'm from Mexico. What would be the cost of a drum same as that shown in the video?
❤️
If you get the drum too tight so that it sounds dingy, is there any way to fix that other than re-lacing the drum?
thanks you very good video wonder about how to make a frame also ?
Hey technical question, if i were making an 18" diameter shaman/frame drum would a single rawhide bend suffice? Info says its about 6-7 square feet of surface area and if i calculated right to do an 18" frame drum thats 2.5" deep it would need to be at least a 30"x30" piece of rawhide. Im confused as to how to convert square feet into inches to figure it out.
Heres the link to the piece im looking at!
www.tandyleather.com/en/product/single-rawhide-bends
if you miscalculate the length of lacing or it breaks, are there techniques for splicing it?
the webpage is not functional, where can I buy the drums or drum kits? Thanks
Thank you for this video. I made my first drum last weekend. It is a beautiful Deer drum! I realized that with the cold and humid evening air, when I play it has a buzzing vibration. When the air is warmer you can´t hear that vibration anymore. Do you know why that is so and what I can do to fix that? Would be lovely if you could help me out here. Thank you
Your hide will respond to temperature and humidity. When it is warmer it will tighten. If it is cold/wet you may need to gently warm your drum e.g. using your body heat. If you warm it near a heat source, such as a fire, be careful not to have it too close, or there for too long.
So how much does something like this cost to buy in US dollars?
Hello all, Maby a bit late, but i was wondering how mutch lace of rawhide i need for creating a drum of 1 meter diamenter? it will use the same waving as above, i have already made my own drum, but this was a small drum. i had some jounerings and requested to make a 1 meter drum (total size, so diameter, from center to end is 50 cm).can anyone enlighten me with this information so i do not cut to mutch or to less strings?thank you
How big around a piece of dry rawhide ... wait ... let's get to the actual question. I have a 24" piece of dry goat rawhide. What's the biggest hoop I should use?
Are your drums made with grain on rawhide? Are yours deer rawhides?
Where do you get the nail used to punch the holes?
Tried to use the link at the end of the video and it didn’t work :(
Hey George what do we need to do to get in contact with you to see about purchasing a drum?
Como se llama el material y donde venden xfavor puedes informar pero en español
Where you get rawhide?
Teach me how to make the sticks so i can play with my new drum please.
I’m here for school lol
hey
why don't you make bearing edges for your drums?
the sound would be better....
but nice video, you helped me build original drums for my kindergarden!
My drum just ripped off one lace, near the holes. Can you repair that? There is a little piece of drum skin gone with the hole..... I am afraid your answer will be "no".
Do you repair drums, as in re-skinning the frame?
Minnisotan?
What nations do you represent?
what do it sound like
How "fresh" should the hide be?
