As seniors, we are often targets for overcharging. My 2005 E320 key fob battery died. I called the local auto mechanic, and they said that it took 30 minutes to change the battery, and it would cost $56 plus tax. That didn't sound right to me, so I started looking on the internet. I found your video, which so clearly explained how to change the batteries. I found the button lithium batteries at Walgreens for $7.50. I got $5 off for my rewards points, so they cost me $2.50 total. It took me about 3 minutes to change them. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! You saved me at least $54.00!
Charging you a half hour is not over charging you. They are not there to help you out, they are there to make money. They have many costs to cover and working for free or cheap is not the right business model. How long will they spend chit-chatting with a friendly guy like you, writing up your invoice, talking to you on the phone, etc. Much time. You can't expect to go to any repair shop and pay less than half an hour. Any place that would do that may be nice people, but they are lousy business people. If something is so easy that it only takes a senior like you 3 minutes to do it, should you be taking it to a shop? And if you do, isn't it right that they charge you? So no one is ripping you off, that's just reality.
Hi Thank you, Im a car dealer and bought a C230 Kompressor last Thursday. Fob wouldn't work and I was using the embedded key to open and lock. After your fine fine perfect video and the dollar store set of 6 CR2025 batteries I had in my drawer, its like having a New Car :) thank you very much. I really appreciate fine people like you who continue to help others. Steven
Worked great for me, In addition to the key shown in this video, a key which worked exactly as shown in the video, I have another. different, key to the same car. It works differently than shown but I was still able to use your insight to get into it. On that one the metal valet key has a tiny prong on the front of it that is like a flat screwdriver. I was able to insert that into the body cavity and press a tab and release the battery tray. The other side of the tray had a static lip that held that side in, but once the one side was released that static lip got enough clearance that it could would release.
Super helpful! My key has not been working properly and couldn't figure out how to open the casing to replace the battery! Thank you so much, saved a trip and bucks at the dealership! :) Thanks! :)
@@bmwrepaircrew8848 I found the second set of batteries the other day because it was 2 sets and couldn’t remember what they were for! This just reminded me 😂😂😂
Yep they definitely could have made it easier! But one good thing is these keys were used for 15-20 years by Mercedes so you should know how to do this on most models up until recently. 👍👍
Ignition will lock if the transponder isn’t recognized, which is different than the ‘fob’ part of the key with the lock/unlock buttons. It’s a chip in the tip of the key unit
Sorry my notifications weren’t going to my phone - yes there are aftermarket keys that locksmiths can program for you that look like the OEM. One of my SL’s has a key like that- looks the same but has slightly different texture on the plastic so you can see it’s an aftermarket key. Might still be $150-300 depending on locksmith - there are also programming units you can get off eBay etc, but if you just need one key it’s more cost effective to just pay the locksmith
Thank you very good , do you know how to replace a key fob for SL 2004 with keyless start ? I' m told the only way is to go to MB dealer and pay $500 for it .
sputnic thanks! As for the SL, I don't know for sure, I actually have an 05 SL500 I need to get keyless go for as well! If I figure it out I'll upload a video, I do know there is a MB DAS and other programs that can clone key transponders to work, but I don't know if it will do keyless go (proximity keys). If I don't get to it and you find out let me know. Thanks!
Yes Sheldon, the dealership will have them, but you can also get them at walmart, batteries plus, and perhaps best but or an auto parts store (ie autozone, etc). Just call ahead to make sure they have them (and you will need two batteries as that's what it takes)
Hey There I have a question. Earlier I dropped my keys to my 2003 c230 in water. I took the batteries out and let the key and batteries sit in rice. Now the doors unlock/ lock but the car will not start. Do you know why?
Nashayla Bright Sounds like there is a possibility the transponder chip was ruined, do you have another key? If your second key will start the car then it's likely that the key that went into the water still had a working "key fob" circuit inside it (i.e. The part that sends the signal to unlock your door) but the transponder portion has been ruined (the part that sends a signal code to your ignition to allow the car to start. Might try a locksmith otherwise you likely will have to go to a dealer to get a key made (they should be able to just off your VIN)
charles salas could be with a connection issue, unit/magazine issue, or more likely a SAM issue (possibly rear SAM) hard to say w/o diagnostic equipment
Don Niduaza also, not sure if you use the local MB dealer, but I think some may give you new batteries for your FOB with a service on the car (not a reason to switch shops as the batteries are cheap), but if u do use the dealer be sure to ask
I have a 2004 e320 lately when I go to start car it will not unlock steering wheel w fob do u think it's the ignition switch or just maybe battery replace there about a year old
BMW Repair Crew thank you well this morning I couldn't unlock car and disarm so I was praying it was a dead battery replaced cr2025 and seemed to be the problem now it does lock unlock and release steering wheel I'll keep my fingers crossed I have 72,000 on vehicle now love ur videos keep up the good work
Hey Alex, I'm guessing this would be your PSE pump. I'm not 100% on it being this setup in a c class, but as far as I know most Mercedes cars use this, it's basically a pneumatic (air pump based) system that uses a pressurized vacuum to activate the actuators lock your doors. Check out benzworld forums for some tips on 1. How to check what the specific prob is- to see if it's your pump, the valve block, or just a fuse/relay and 2. If it is the pump you may be able to just replace the electric motor for like 20 bucks as I did on my S class (sorry haven't put together the video yet), rather than replacing the whole unit (check out the forums for tips on this too), also, you likely have a leak in one of your air lines or actuators do be sure to find the leak and fix it or else you'll burn the pump or blow the fuse again. Hope this helps!
I just bought a 2005 S500 that uses this key.....My question is how do I start the car with the start/stop button on the shifter ? I tried it with the key turned on, to no avail...The car starts fine just using the FOB key, but I would like to use the push-button also...Thanx in advance...
Hey John! I think you actually will need what they call the 'keyless go card'. That start stop button is the keyless go option, basically MB was one of the first to use the keyless start back in maybe 99-00 when this S class came out. I know the preface lift (00-02) one had the card, basically the size of a credit card and a little thicker, you have to have that to use the keyless option. I can't tell you for sure if by 05 they integrated that into the key, but I don't think if the key looks like the one in my vid that it has that capability. Might call the dealer near you to double check. Then if you really want one, check out the benzworld forums and see if anyone knows of a good place to get a replacement without paying through the nose. Hope this helps!
BMW Repair Crew ....Many thanks for your quick response BMWrc...Yes, it helped alot...Since yesterday, a friend had told me the same thing, and also mentioned that the "card" may require a monthly fee..I will heed your advice and investigate further into MB forums on this matter...If there is an actual fee, I will probably skip this particular perk, and exercise my wrist,by turning the key in the old-style.Thanks again from Texas...GOTRUMP....
John, as far as I know it should not require a subscription, the keyless go card if coded correctly should just work like the keyless function of the modern keyless start key FOBs, shouldn't require any additional cost past getting one that works. Best of luck!
AZ Adapters hey friend, I assume you have the newer chrome style key? I have that on one of my SL's I'll try to upload a video but in case life gets in the way simply do this: remove the small metal key for manual door locks, just similar to the key removal on this vid. Next use the long flat part of the key or a small flat screwdriver to push in the retaining clip on the inside of the hole the key came out of. Try to press on it by positioning the screwdriver in the hole opposite the side of the key notch and the cover you're trying to pop off is the side OPPOSITE the buttons. Inside you should find a single cr2025 (or maybe 2032?) battery. Replace it and pop the cover back on and you're good to go!
I think for a 2014 key fob key you pop off (gently prior up the bottom (wide part) of the the rear cover (meaning the side that does not have the buttons) and this will expose the battery compartment. The battery you need is a CR2025 which you can get pretty much anywhere.
I would try a few different batteries before giving up, also you can try just swapping the electronic board of another fob you buy on eBay etc for cheap, as the transponder that starts the car may not be on it and this might just be for the door locks. I will try to look at one of my keys to see. Hope this helps!
Likely your transmitter is bad if the battery doesn’t work or it needs Re-syncing. If you didn’t just recently have working locks then I’d wager your PSE pump is actually bad and it’s not your key at all
Hi there, i did what you explained on the video. Unfortunately, the locks will not work with the remote and new battery, yet the key works to start the car. Somehow the locks became disabled and i cannot figure out how to fix this. Mercedes was ZERO help. Thank you!
Jackie Ruka I would try this again and make sure you placed the batteries in correctly as they can unfortunately fit it upside down and it's hard to read the image on the fob bc it's so small. If your locks weren't working before the key batteries died it may be your pse pump
Hi there, what happened was my fob got wet. And the locks were working fine prior to that. Mercedes put in a new battery into the fob but it did not take. So, now I am not sure if I need a whole new fob case? Again, the fob works in the ignition just not the locks. I will look at the battery placement and if you have another thought please let me know. Appreciate your reply! Thank you!!
I can't remember the battery off the top of my head, it should be in the video, looks like the thumbnail shows CR202.... Can't read the last number. Remember u need two
Thanks Donna! I think any CR2025 should do the trick, just be sure you have 2 batteries, right!? Mercedes likes to do it better than everybody else an overengineer things ;)
If the lights flash, then your pse pump that controls your lock mechanisms may be bad. Otherwise it could be either batteries that are bad or installed upside down, or the key is out of sink
You may need to look up instructions on reprogramming the FOB on your key so it unlocks the doors. If that doesn't work your remote may be bad, but I'd try a new set of batteries before I got a new key if both those didn't work
This video is more than seven years old and it is still helping people. It is exactly what I needed. Thank you!

If the lights flash, then your pse pump that controls your lock mechanisms may be bad. Otherwise it could be either batteries that are bad or installed upside down, or the key is out of sink
The light on key, lights up. so I don't think its the key. What do you mean about "out of sink"? The engine starts.
You may need to look up instructions on reprogramming the FOB on your key so it unlocks the doors. If that doesn't work your remote may be bad, but I'd try a new set of batteries before I got a new key if both those didn't work
Okay, thank you.
