I'm watching this video in April of 2019 and I got to tell you I just bought my first pair Vibrams and I want to be the guy with a smile on my face running instead of the guy driving to McDonald's which is what I've been doing for the longest time. Thanks for all the info I will take it to heart.

my uncle runs ultras (100 mile runs in mountains) in fivefingers, he's never injured his self since he started using them and also after the runs he says he doesn't feel beat up, as he used to when using normal shoes

I had vibrams almost 7 years ago. I still remember how bad my feet and calves hurt after the first day in them. Agony! But, I’m a dumb dumb and wore them around a mall for like 3 hours the first day. Big mistake!!! Once I got used to them, however, they became my favorite shoes and I wore them everywhere ( though people always gave me weird looks with them) In normal shoes I have always had a habit of stepping wrong and spraining my ankles, especially on any uneven surfaces. This used to happen about twice a year and my training would be ruined for like a month while I healed. But vibram shoes never made me have that issue. For some reason, when my feet got bigger and my old pair no longer fit, I didn’t think to get a new pair, probably because I was broke at the time. I’m finally getting a knew pair to try and help some issues with runners knee I’ve been having, and avoid rolling my ankles repeatedly, which is a problem that returned with the normal running shoes. This time I will remember to transition properly.

    Great video!!!
I used to run half marathons, but a foot injury stopped me running. And then my over compensation for my bad foot has meant I haven't been able to run more than a mile in normal trainers without severe knee pain!!!
Just bought my first pair of fivers, looking for a fresh start!
Went for my first run yesterday (1mile) and really enjoyed it. I think I over thought the technique though, and wasn't even letting my heels touch the ground.
Today the DOMS in my calves is insane!!!
Can't wait for it to fade, so I can go out again.

Useful video but you could make these points in like 3 minutes:
    1) technique, striking [could you demonstrate? else this could be a podcast]
    2) DOMS
    3) consistent and cautious
    4) enjoy
Still wish I'd seen this when I first got my toe shoes

Hey Steve! I live in South India & had been planning to get a new pair of running shoes. I've been through most of your videos & got myself a V-run... began 10 days ago with walking around in them & everywhere else socially. did a few walks on tarmac. did my first jog yesterday for about 2kms & focused a lot on technique. got very mild DOMs now but such an amazing experience using these shoes. I've always been a short distance runner to keep fit & these are the best I've had so far. you're videos are fantastic! Great help

Great videos. i slipped a disc in my back a couple of years ago and transitioned to mostly treadmill running, while also moving to a low-rise shoe. this was a good move, but i avoided running on hard surfaces because i'd feel it so much in my low back. i bought a pair of vibram bikila evo (the bright blue ones) on sale after a couple of times forgetting my shoes for my gym workout and running barefoot. recently i've rediscovered outdoor running, which i've always preferred, and when i run in my vibrams, i have no low back pain at all. around here i get a lot of weird looks with these shoes, but because I am pain-free, don't care one bit. after seeing your videos, it just affirms what i can attest to first-hand. thank you!

Hey mate, dancer here. Also started to run in vibrams and it is great. Dancers usually are used to have maybe a small heel, but more so JUST a piece of leather (suede) between foot and the wooden dance floor. And I was wondering why when back in 1920s and 1940s when the swing dances were going crazy why all those "normals" were able to dance to such fast music, like really fast big band jazz with up to 210bpm. Maybe, and I am just guessing here, but maybe they just were walking much more than we do today and also their shoes didnt have all the fancy pants support structure aka you-cant-walk-right-anymore and thus had much stronger feet and legs. Because normal people have huge problems getting to a point where they can move their feet fast enough to dance to what used to be the regular tempo and the regular songs for entire evenings. It is crazy what we lost.

Been running in my V-Trails now for about 2 months, but running minimalist for around 4 years. My first run I did in my V-Trails I did 4 miles and my calves ached for about 4 days straight, loved it. Not even the cold weather in the UK deters me. Couldn't feel my toes last week, when I got back they were actually blue!

Just started running less than a year ago 25 when I started. Realized just before my 26th birthday I was a heel striker, explained my lack of muscle in my calves. In the past month I have became a midfoot runner went through a great deal of pain in my calves, though I was able to ace my police entry physical exam with calf cramps(test was 5 days from my first attempt at midfoot) 11:18 1.5 mile running in nike flyknit free 4.0. expecting a ton of growth in my running with midfoot and probably picking up some five fingers also I am 6'4" tall and 175 I feel I am a built runner. watched and liked a bunch of videos. also looking at newton mv3.

I found that the Altra Escalante is the best shoe. It has a wide toe box that allows the same toe spread as the Vibrams, with the added protection of a traditional no drop shoe and you dont have to fight it to put it on or wear special socks.

hahaha! yeah its the weirdest thing about this! its not the weird toe shoes, its us smiling wile running! people look at u like ure an alien! PS: to all newbies, number one rule in my opinion is TAKE IT SLOW! I didnt have problems with technique cos i started with the thinnest model at the time: the seeyas, and they FORCed me to run properly. however, I Simply ran the same mileage i used to from day one and i ruined my aquiles tendon. then i healed that and screwed my metatarsus with microfractures, then i healed that too and overstressed my foot ligaments! when all that healed i still had muscle sorenesz in my feet for over 5 months for instantly transitioning all my wardrobe to 3mm soles shoes! end of story: my feet are now strong and feel great and i never got knee pain or plantar fascitis like i did recurrently on regular shoes! i took a jump too fast and paid the price but even so it was the best decision i could have made! just came back from my first trail run marathon without a single pain when i couldnt do more than 6km on regular shoes!

Once you have successfully transitioned to the new forefoot running style and your brain has made that 'flip' as mentioned (3:00), can you still go for runs with rigid shoes and heel strike? Can we switch between styles at will, or is the brain not capable of doing both without ruining form?

Kind of late in the switch. hate hate running, getting back into it and my heels are killing me. At this point I'm open to try anything. Got some time during lockdown, gonna order a pair of New balance minimus or fivefinger. So running on your toes is almost like constantly falling forward? would it be safer to first try running uphill? kind of have weak calves, have a feeling this is gonna be a very short run.

+eglantinalan1 I also have very flat feet and over pronate badly. The best thing I did was get this shoe. After using them for a while, I actually built back a small arch in my feet (strengthened the arch). I also never have back, knee and hip pain associated with my over pronation because as he mentions, it forces your body to use the correct tendons and muscles. Just do as he says and take it slow. You will feel the small rocks, cracks etc, but you will get use to it.

Steve, whilst i felt this was a good video in general about vibrams, you didn't mention once about posture or biomechanics! A lot of runners i see shouldn't even be running let alone in vibrams, due to very poor mechanics. I'm a big fan of vibrams and bang the drum myself and wear them for everything including work and socially as well as in the gym. But it would be good to hear a little bit about getting people checked out and ensuring they are actually in a condition to run in the first place.

    • @kalclashfitness
      @kalclashfitness  9 лет назад +1

Hey man, yeah I've covered posture in some of my other videos. I'm not sure that there are many people with mechanics so poor that should stop them running. Getting checked out is always a good idea, but people can wait for too many variables to become right and never start transitioning.

Hi Steve - thanks for posting this. I have just bought my first pair of Vibrams (Bikila Evo) after suffering with runner's knee which kept throwing me off my training schedule for up to a month at a time. A quick question about transitioning - I went for my first run and was certainly forefoot striking fine - maybe too much as I don't think i was bringing my heel back down fully. I got DOMs which have only cleared up after a week. Is it normal to have DOMs that last a week? I am viewing this transition as a long game - I would like to transition fully by xmas and then start doing the 10km+ runs. Your thoughts would be welcome - cheers

    • @kalclashfitness
      @kalclashfitness  10 лет назад

Hi Adam. Good question. Everyone is different. I was having DOMs for up to a week too, but I know other peoplle that had no pain at all. It all depends on the person. One thing to be concious of is that even though you are forefoot striking you are probably still landing your foot way out in front of your body, rather than directly under the hips. This can cause extra stress on the lower legs and intensify DOMs. It will get easier and as long as you're sensible you'll be hitting those 10k's by Christmas easily! Let me know how you get on...

I have the wonderful blessing of wide feet and I noticed the Bikila info says great for a wide foot, is this true? Do you have any idea if the Bikila evo is good for wide also? :) Thank you if you have a chance to answer it.

Hey man, thanks for the feedback. Essentially one of the main reasons Vibram introduced the laced version of their running shoes was to accommodate wider feet, so you should be fine. Depending on the width you may need to go a size up, but I'd recommend trying a pair or two on to find the right size for you.

The only main issue I have so far Is no shoe stores near me sell any. REI near me only has the slip on pair. I've fallen off the band wagon on a healthy life style, so this is more of a motivation present for myself. I used to run barefooted till I broke a rib and that just took recovery...thank you for the info. :)

Do you ever sell any of your vibrams mate?

One thing that I struggle with understanding is, no one can wear these shoes all day every day, so if your feet structure changes to support this natural style, won't your everyday shoes start to change it back?

Running and walking are two very different activities dude. If you're a regular barefoot runner then you'll have superhero-like feet and calves

I only run 5k's and they are on concrete. Will any model of Vibrams do the job?

I just bought my first pair of Vibram Bikila LS shoes. Do you see any problem with a gradual transition by incorporating the Five Fingers one day a week while I run three days a week in conventional shoes? I recently purchased a couple of pair of Brooks Adrenaline shoes (my normal running shoe) and I want to wear these down. I figured if I run six months in these Five Fingers one day a week I should get used to running in them by then. Any thoughts?

legalsolutions07 Good question. Many people do this with good success. Personally I jumped straight into the Vibrams, but it's because I was having a lot of issues running in conventional running shoes. You still need to build up the mileage slowly when running in Vibrams though to avoid DOMS. Let me know how you go.

i tried this, but started feeling uncomfortable in normal running shoes, where as my Spyridon MR's felt really good. so after about 3 weeks i just ran in the MR's, i run 3 times a week as i need time to recover.
i do suffer really bad with the DOMS, but then i'm new to running anyway, i'm up to 5k now and looking forward to the future. (just started week 8 on C25K)
i also have a pair of EL-X for everyday use and TKD training
