It took six years of crummy running to realize that if I take my shoes off, I run better and it's starts to get fun. Thank you for uploading a great instructional video.
Started running this January. Now mid March, With ~4 45min runs a week, I’ve seen huge aerobic and anaerobic improvement from where I was. Light squatting, benching, and dead lifting has been very helpful as well. Posture and back pain have improved. In fact, low back and neck pain were the major cause for this New Years resolution. Went for my first “barefoot” run 2 days ago. I wore shoes, but focused on landing ONLY on the balls of my feet. My calves are feeling the burn, but my running form felt unbelievably good compared to my normal heel striking. Can not wait till my calves catch up to the rest of my legs and I can start to really run.
Just take a look at how some of the most athletic people feel way more comfortable while practicing or performing barefoot. Deadlifting, gymnastics and martial arts are a few examples that come to mind.
I can’t wait to get to the point that I can run again. Currently doing other cardio to lose about 40 lbs and improve cardio/aerobic/anaerobic fitness first.
Depends on your surface. On nice roads (read: with no bits of glass or construction debris) or soft surfaces you should be fine. It just takes a bit of practice.
i hav since 15 and iam now 40 been jogging in place barefoot about a hour a day,, well recnetly last year i made what iam feeling may have been a big painful mistake i began jogging with shoes ,, well i have lot of bad knee pain on occassion since then, never had it when barfeoot running but now i do beggining today i began barefool indoor jogging on large piece of double carpet,, fingers crossed hope the pain goes away
Regardless of all this scientific bs that we don't fully understand I personally feel way better running barefoot than with shoes on.I feel restricted with sneakers on
ok, I like running minimalistic myselfe but did I hear that right? ... so we know exactly where the injury rates are today, somewhare between between 20 and 79% lol
The video is sponsored by brooks, that’s why his wearing shoes.. brooks shoes of course! But his qualified opinion on barefoot running is obviously unbiased. KEEP BUYING RUNNING SHOES, BUY BROOKS is the message here haha
They're considered to be 'transition' shoes to help you switch from heel-striking in cushioned shoes to fore-foot striking in minimalist shoes. If you've been running in shoes for years/decades you should change your running style gradually to allow time to adjust. Obviously, shoe manufactures don't want us to go completely barefoot. The Nike shoes have different numbers which represent the different amounts of cushioning and heel-to-toe drop. The lower the number the more minimalist the shoe.
This is part of the problem with the whole heel vs forefoot argument. The data about injuries is inconclusive either way and many more studies need to be carried out before 'evidence based' benefits can be claimed by either side. It's also important to remember that the demographics of runners has changed significantly over the last 50 years. There are more 'amateurs' running in these shoes today than ever before because running has become so popular. This has had a impact on injury rates..
I was going to skip past your comment, but then I remembered when I was in Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm). I found that I really liked sleeping in the sand. I actually had a cot available, but I liked sleeping in the sand better.
Even if we had an exact number of "injury rates", it would still be meaningless to say they "haven't changed" based on it alone - because it could well be that with more comfortable shoes people are running more often/faster/more intensively and thus making it more likely to get injured during the activity. Likewise, it's silly to say that barefoot runners get fewer injuries if it happens that they run less or shorter distances (e.g. because of the discomfort).
Unfortunately, Crocs are not suitable for all-day use,” Megan Leahy, DPM, a Chicago-based podiatrist with the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, tells the Huffington Post. “These shoes do not adequately secure the heel. When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip, which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns, and calluses. The same thing can happen with flip-flops or any backless shoes as the heel is not secured.”
How or why you relate his statement with politicians is your own evaluation, the whole while he is not even approaching politics at all. Go run, if indeed you run at all.
I read that book too. It seems to me that the book glorified the spirit of Tara runners (who ran in sandals...not bare). It was barefoot Ted running barefoot in the book and his characterization was not quite flattering.
after 6 months of using 5 fingers vibram, I started having knee pain, groin pain the back of my same leg hurt badly when running..was terrible I had to give up running with five fingers and go back to classic running shoes :( .
would the popular nike free runs really be barefoot shoes? because although there's little support it seems to have a lot of cushioning. can somebody help?
I naturally have a very high arch. Is that better for fore foot striking? I feel more efficient when I run. It feels weird, I'm gonna try it more often.
I'm gonna start barefoot running and I think the doctor is correct when he states that man is anatomically perfect, though not every man is born anatomically perfect. However, I find it ironic that he makes references to the evolutionary worldview. How can man be anatomically perfect if he is merely evolved from the forces of nature? Evolution presupposes that man was not perfect hence the need to evolve, why should we assume then that man is now anatomically perfect and not still evolving? Evolution must presuppose that man is still evolving and that he is not anatomically perfect, this makes no sense. I believe it makes more sense to say that man is designed to be anatomically perfect and that man was created to be anatomically perfect than it does to attribute man's anatomical perfection to the forces of nature (Macro-Evolution).
+Azygos1986 Evolution is an ongoing process, but there is only so much more that a fish can learn about swimming. We are one of nature's finest distance runners. All kinds of animals can beat us in a short sprint, but our biomechanics and cooling system make us perfectly adapted to the long haul, or close enough to it that we're not likely to see much improvement; certainly not now that most of us have given up persistence hunting for civilized life. Still, that was only 10,000 years or so ago. Not very long in evolutionary terms, so we can still enjoy that part of our biological heritage. Enjoy the running! Remember to start VERY slow. Once I was used to actual ground under my feet, even VFFs started to feel almost like wearing a blindfold, if that makes sense. :-)
ZygoteProducer The ONLY thing evolution presupposes is the existence of life. Evolution also has no goals, such as perfection. So much wrong with your comment... so much.
We are perfect Because we are evolved. If we artificial created by a god, then there is a room for mistakes. With "evolved" there is flexibility and individual adjustments.
I agree your form is probably better when barefoot, because the shoe already has a shape but it's not the shape of your foot. But just because shoes haven't decreased injury rate doesn't mean they're not comfortable to wear. I NEED MY SHOES!!!
I hate shoes ,Vibram and the other manufacturers should give it a rest people had healthier feet before shoes ostioporosis caused by shoes , and folks never wash their shoes or their feet [STINK] I have 15 E wide feet size 11 us for 58 years the nurse in the podatrists office shouted at me I want you to weare hightops . ans no! shoes like the shaving industry they just want to sell their wares even if they hurt people . all the best gurkirpal singh
Just a quick question why are shoes so interwoven into society? everywheare no shoes no service doctor respectfully why are you in shoes ? In the 1800s the us called out the regular army to force native americans to weare shoes. On holliday the airline blocked me from boarding the plane without shoes , REFUND ! Q if shoes are so mandatory then why dont they make everybody weare operalength gloves even in summer?all the best gurkirpal singh

Rowing has also helped with the neck pain in my estimation. Use your bodies folks! Feel lighter on your feet!
Awesome rant. Just read Born to Run and bought a pair of Vibrams.

Really cool, thanks for taking the time to share this

Yup, science is reaaaally precise !
but hes wearing shoes!!!
You must watch the second video in order to understand him and his shoes.
The video is sponsored by brooks, that’s why his wearing shoes.. brooks shoes of course!

KEEP BUYING RUNNING SHOES, BUY BROOKS is the message here haha
@@thechangingman3763 if its unbiased, shouldn't it be by running shoes?
isnt it ironic there is an add for a shoe company at the end.
What about barefoot for pivot sports like tennis? That safe?

whiout shoes while running in road disadvantage

floor sleeping too or nah? I'm curious

You'll grow to hate sleeping in beds
Wooden floor with a couple heavy blankets as mattress = 👌👌👌🥰
Ugh can't do it! I NEED a pair of shoes when I'm running :)
running barefoot is good but what about walking barefoot that would also make some sense
Anything that gets you off the couch is good.

A good series of videos. Suspiciously branded by Brooks, but the content seems unbiased.
Интересное наверное видео...о чём он толкует?

Watch out for syringes, some druggies go to nature to do it. I am using sandals to hike in the mountains and I love it.
“This talk is going to be different to others I’ve seen” because unlike the other videos I’m trying to sell you brooks trainers.
after 6 months of using 5 fingers vibram, I started having knee pain, groin pain the back of my same leg hurt badly when running..was terrible I had to give up running with five fingers and go back to classic running shoes :( .

He folowed that up with "witch means we have no idea what the injury rate really is."
Brooks make minimalist shoes
This is worth watching until the end.
great video!
can bunion be fixed by wearing 5 finger shoes? or barefoot running/walking?
I naturally have a very high arch. Is that better for fore foot striking? I feel more efficient when I run. It feels weird, I'm gonna try it more often.
Best shoes for flat feet people
I have this guy as my podiatrist haha that's crazy
Do you work at Evergreen?? My mom works there!
Also, awesome video! I started in Vibrams and I'm glad I did!
Someday scientist will admit that bare body is good for us to be healthy always
Do you run?
We both have a midwest accent. I think he sounds way cooler.
I do. Thanks!
Thanks.
Spent a $150 on barefoot shoes lol
Uh...did anyone else notice this guy sounds like Maynard James Keenan?

Yea our species is very perfect but evolution will take a lot lot lot lot longer for us.

Why are you on a barefoot running page?
In part 2, he says that he was not born to run because he has a bone in his foot that prevents him from walking on hard surfaces barefoot.
KD should see this...
You're so lucky!
Well you 're probably right :) thanks
I'm here to reasearch barefoot running, not politics.

Minimal zero drops shoes...i agree. But born to run is an aweful book
eh, wrong. Watch the video again.
is funny how he is talking about barefoot being healthier than shoes, and yet he is wearing shoes wild he is presenting!
God gave us shoes it our feet
yeah but no shoes no shirt no service lol
It's all garbage :) He's right, just use common sense, use your intuition.
is he running during the video? No! there's your answer.
