They were really tiny ships. What courage to sail these across the ocean.

They are absolutely beautiful ships!!! They are works of art!!! Columbus and his crew were very brave to take on the Atlantic Ocean in those little ships!!! I means let's face it they not the "Love Boat"!!!! Lol!!!!!

It took them just over 30 days to reach the new land in a boat shaped like a pecan. Amazing!

Incredible how small those ships are. To think that such a journey was done on such a small cramped ship.

i doubt Columbus' exploration ships were that small even hundreds of years ago
the owner probably had to build them on a shoestring budget they would have better waited more to gather more funding from more investors and done a true version using the exact dimensions the historical carrack and caravels had in 15th century

@@opreadumitru1 They were indeed this small. That's the whole point of the caravel: a small maneuverable ship able to quickly turn about and avoid obstacles like sandbanks and rock formations and also other ships. It was an exploration vessel. The Nau, or carrack, came later and was indeed bigger as its purpose was to carry cargo for trade.

The other thing I noticed was that they are not heeling in the wind like our “modern” sailboats seem to do. In all of the videos I have seen them sailing in with the wind coming from different directions, I don’t see anywhere near the amount of heeling taking place. It must have to do with the amount of ballast on board and the placement of the ballast.

When going transoceanic, after taking a rest in the canary islands, Columbus ordered to change the lateen rigs to squares, because large lateens are labor intensive.
in period they would try to dip the lateen to change the tack. and this is really hard with a heavy 10 meter yard

    • @Bravo_BZ

Nina was re-rigged to square sail halfway through Columbus’ voyage.
