@@freakymoejoe2Hwei grew up/practiced art at a temple and had to repress his abilities because they proved dangerous and ppl were scared of it. Jhin came along and the two bonded over similar art interests. Eventually Jhin went and blew up the temple, killing ppl inside (effectively betraying Hwei). Hwei embraces his dark side and light side, but still tries to do positive in the world. On the other hand, Jhin murders for art.

Nah~ Jhin is an artist of death but Hwei is an artist of mass destruction. At least after he got this power from whatever it is.

Very cool character, I like how he at first seems kinda evil but he's totally tender, emotional and benevolent
I never got evil vibes from him, he looks like a soft good boy. But judging from the voice lines, the fact that he's enabling a psychopatic murderer and looking to him for approval raises some questions, and at best would put him in neutral alignment...

What I understand about him is that he has a dark side and Jhin's art brings this to light. maybe this dark side of him came as a ptsd after the noxus invasion

@@dieptrieu6564 Essentially this, there's a level of self fear and self loathing because while his first response to Jhin's violence was disgust, the second was fascination. He went on a roller coaster of, "That's horrible," to "That's beautiful in a way," and ended at "What the fuck is wrong with me?" and it's sort of lead to him being as depressive as he is, well that and some other factors.
I really appreciate how he embodies the idea of wistfulness and melancholy. There are as many ways to be an artist as there are grains of sand on Earth but if there was a singular way to represent the idea of an artist, this would be it in my eyes. Beautiful voice with beautiful lines, I applaud all the people who worked to bring him to life. Their understanding of the approach of an artist to life really shows and I am immensely grateful for it.

I hate how depressed he is. I wanted a cheerful artist that mixes xolors in his abilities for new colors and effecta, but i suppose riot old toaster can only handle so much creativity so i will settle for this instead i guess.

I agree that the concept of "artist" is as varied, rich, and diverse and the concept of "art", and I also feel like Hwei's approach to artistry is (in my eyes) as good of a singular depiction of an artist as could be - I would even say that it is even more so than Jhin's, and to say that he set a high standard would be an understatement. (Once again, this is completely subjective, and I don't really believe in comparing this kind of thing generally anyway; but I'm making an exception for the sake of expressing my love for Hwei's mind.)
One thing that genuinely touched me in particular is the conflict and union, at once, of wistfulness and eagerness to feel - not only negative emotions, but positive ones as well. (By the way, you made me discover the word "wistful", and I love learning new words and have always compared this love to what a painter might feel upon discovering a new color, which is pretty fitting given the video on which we're commenting :p So thanks!)
I feel like this comment is already too long, so I'll have to use approximations for the sake of brevity; but the richness of the mind of an artist is something that has felt underestimated (for lack of a better word) in the vast majority of the depictions I've seen in various media. Some focus on the melancholy, some on the obsessive desire to feel. Some focus on negative emotions - making oneself feel pain cathartically, chasing a vain ideal of perfection, etc. -, some on positive ones - the euphoria of creation, or of sharing with others. And while those can surely be focussed on in a way that leads to an interesting depiction of an artist's mind, they always felt too "singular", "monolithic".
So seeing so much variety in Hwei's mind, so much richness, so many emotions and color - it was thoroughly refreshing. I haven't even played league in years, but my god I love him. The voice acting is outstanding as well - so much pain and eagerness in his voice. I lowkey might have teared up a little at the "Feel with me!" line.

Shen isn't single minded about balance. Ionia has a serious demon problem and the Kinkou are demon hunters. They're stopping Ionia from fking itself over. Hwei is an empath and hinted to have a demon in him which puts him against the Kinkou.
Still It's weird to me how Riot flames Shen, but Kennen and Akali who also have the same values get away with everything.
@@faceless8424 We can't really call that flaming. Shen managed to get his student to leave because he was stuck in his old ways. He taught Akali everything he could and she just knew his way wasn't for her.
The concept of a sympathetic demon isn't really in the lore yet and they're usually very vicious and deadly. But what if there was a demon that didn't want any trouble and just wanted to live? The Kinkou wouldn't risk it. Genocide is their solution because there has never been any other way and they aren't changing any now.
Shen is doing what he believes is right. Doesn't mean a bunch of youngins can't call him a boomer lol

I love that he goes between being hopeful and full of despair whether hes around Jhin or not, also finally someone who actually laughs at other champions jokes no snarky comeback just an honest to God laugh

I was amazed when he cries because he just kill someone, it shows he truly care about lives, and also something very fresh in league vo. Most of the time voicelines of when a champ or their legendary skins kill someone are just them dissing their opponent.

@@DIRTkat_ofc I mean her whole ordeal is that she hate bandle because they are loud and energetic. It's base hatred no matter what you want to call it. The whole sentinel lore is a whole mess so you shouldn't use it as a basis for her actual story or character.

I have been, for years now, waiting for a champion to share Jhin's plight, his only weakness in the lore was how isolated he was for a long time, and he felt like an instrument to give purpose to the fights of everyone else, I get that's part of his character as the deranged unpredictable serial murderer, but Jhin is too famous to stay that forever, he deserves an arc of his own, he deserves a groupie, a henchman, a love hate relationship where's he the main character, he deserves a connection and I am so happy he finally got it, on that note it feels like riot are giving aphelios2.0 his voice because it's such a waste that he doesn't. Hope the lore fleshes out some of Jhin's vulnerabilities and gives him the depth he oh so deserves.

you should take a look at the zed's comics, they give some insight of Jhin as well and pretty cool relationships.
@@Madheim777 I read it, it's still pretty much Zed centric and Jhin is just as volatile because he has to be for the sake of Shen and Zed romance, there's this part in Jhin lore where after his capture he's described as mild mannerd, timid and quite talented, I wanted more of that ever since I read the lore...the comic was nice but nothing we didn't know already.
@@Masa0133 while I indulge in shipping, for the Canon I am hoping they steer from the romance because it's very restrictive and will take away from Jhin's reveal, they've been trickling us for so long I'd die if they reveal a whole ass relationship, it's just not the way to go.
@@KhadaJhin04 I've been living in fear of Riot unmasking Jhin for years now. I know they'll make him look way younger than he actually is and extremely basic. I would prefer Jhin to canonically have no mentions of any relationships. Whatever that Rioter said in that Q&A ages ago about him being Gunsexual, either implying no sexual attraction at all or something related to his murders, is more intriguing imo.

I'm quite surprised when I saw ppl calling him "edgy and cringy". I mean, sure, he's depressed (heck I'd be depressed too if some random dude showed up and murdered my entire home.), and his design isn't the brightest either. But despite all that, amidst the sadness in his lines and how he delivers them, you can literally see the light of hopes and the underlying desire for recognition that he's trying to cling onto. Heck, he's super polite too if you ask me. I for the love of me failed to see how he's "edgy", imho.
Finally Irelia interactions. Good to see more Ionia-noxus conflict and people who felt it to the core

He has such a sweet voice holy shit. Amazing voicelines as well, they really captured the artist vibe and way of thinking with him. I really love how the narration uses his art as his way of working through his own trauma as well, it's relatable.

I cannot help a bit but be teary and melancholic when listening to his voice. It is so calming and sincere to his emotions. The trauma turned to strength through art🤧. Some of his voice lines especially on his skills seems like what he would say in his monologues. In fact, I think most of his interactions are just internal reactons towards his fellow Ionians. Overall, I like him. Character, lore, voice and voicelines, personality, and how empathetic he is. Makes me want to use him, not because of his skills or novelty, but for the chamption itself which is a first for me. (Teemo was the first in the past tbh, but that was because he was just infamous😂.)

I don't know if it's intended or not, but I'll still point out that he is a painter using colourful paints and all, yet his name is pronounced like 灰 huī, which is Chinese for grey

I'm not a player of league in the main series, moreso the side games like Ruined King, Song of Nunu and LoR and I love reading up on the lore and backstories for the champions. But I love the connection Hwei has to Jhin! Can't wait to see any official written works that will be released for Hwei!! And the VA did a stellar job! I think it's Stephen Fu? Sounds a bit like Diamant from from FE Engage.
