- Here's a segment of the kids news featurette, In The News - which deals with the subject of Central America, touching on peace talks going on at that time in El Salvador between the government and rebel leaders, with President Reagan's Special Envoy to Central America Richard Stone serving as a mediator; as well as Stone's meetings with Nicaragua Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega who supporter the Salvadoran rebels. Mention is also made of Reagan ordering naval exercises off Central America, and comparisons to Teddy Roosevelt's "big stick" policy of the 1900's; meetings held by the "Contadora Four" which consisted of the leaders of Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela; and Cuban leader Fidel Castro's support of the Salvadoran rebels.
Also includes a commercial break for Swiss Miss Pudding Bars - frozen pudding on a stick, in vanilla, chocolate, chocolate toffee-coated, and variety packs.
These aired between commercial breaks during Saturday morning cartoons on CBS affiliates from 1971 to 1986 (and was for that network what the long-running animated Schoolhouse Rock featurettes were for ABC). For many years, it was the one of the only times a CBS News production had theme music. This particular segment aired at the end of The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show.
Produced by CBS News. (C) MCMLXXXIII CBS Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Voiceover by Doug Poling.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Saturday, August 6th 1983 at a little before 11:00am.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,000+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I'm 60 years old and i watched in the news during cartoon commercial breaks.
I remember watching IN THE NEWS while growing up.
Who could forget these segments on a Saturday? I tended to remember the ones commenting on the Iran-Iraq war that seemed to rage non-stop throughout the 80s. Good to see Central America in the mix.
I loved this as a kid n how the spinning globe turns into the CBS EYE logo at the end
😍I'm the same way, too! It's so hypnotic when I was little!! 💞
Just takes me way back
I remember Swiss Miss Pudding Bars! Yummers!
Going into the 80s, a character from the Saturday morning lineup would make the In the News announcement. At one point Mr. Magoo was the only one doing it.
I remember Doug Poling from CBS Radio news.
Have you any more of these amazing gems when the topic was the cold war or the nuclear arms race!??
that would really take me back as a Cold War kid
Thank You
wow! i remember these!
Okay, now I have a strong craving for a Swiss Miss chocolate toffee coated ice cream bar. Do they still make those?
Ryan Hunter
Jeremy H. I wish!

Actually, they were frozen pudding, not ice cream bars. No, they don't make them any more, which is too bad because they were really good!

You left yourself wide open for that. And by your reply, you've admitted it.
No kid back then gave two bleeps about In the News! Just get back to the cartoons!
Jon Stewart On the contrary, we loved it!
I loved watching in the news. Maybe that's why I'm well rounded. LOL!
The early Nick Studio 10.
But it's important and not a cringy meme moment.
