- Legendaries have been one of the most sought after items in wow, and for a good reason too they are by far the strongest items in the game, at least until they are replaced by leveling greens in the next expansion that is. And so of course we have had MANY legendaries over the many years of wow, and with many different methods of obtaining them, which we will be going over today.

Vanilla did it best in my opinion. Seeing someone with Sulfuras or Thunderfury was always incredible. Of course everyone had one in classic but I think the idea of a rare and very hard to get item is the right idea, it makes the thing more special.
not in todays wow. Where logs are the only thing that matter being the person with out the legendary you fall short and get booted or get no invite.

What he probably did was just copy the current content version. IE hand of rag with vers. Instead of what they were during live content.

Yes, you do not need ammo BUT the ammo made the difference in this scenario.
I think my favorite legendary implementation is the fangs of the father (I admittedly might be biased since it was my first legendary). I'll admit that a single class specific legendary was a bad idea, the way they implemented it was amazing. I love the quest versions of legendaries, I love that it requires you to do both raid and solo content, and I love that you had to have a good grasp on the full toolkit of the rogue to get through the solo bits. It was easily up there as one of my favorite experiences in wow, and if they eventually get to cataclysm classic, I'm gonna try and do it again. Plus I used those daggers all the way up to mists max level and only finally replaced them with daggers from the heroic dungeons.
You actualy missed a legendary weapon from classic/vanilla. Andonisus, Reaper of Souls - was a temporary legendary much like Tempest Keep, that dropped from a boss that will help the encounter. It dropped off Atiesh when doing Atiesh legendary staff questline. And trivia for those that dont know Atiesh is actualy a demon you have to fight.
I dislike the System of Legendarys in the last few Expansions a lot. Legendaries went from a totally epic and rare thing to a prerequisite that everyone must have...
Legendaries... were anything but “epic” or “rare.” A pox on you, sir, for besmirching the good name and repute of legendaries EVERYWHERE!!!
Jokes aside in shadowlands it makes sense that we need legendaries to fight. If you think about it we’re going against things in purgatory.
I am a big casual so you'd think the current Legendary system would appeal to me and indeed I think Shadowland's Legendary system is interesting but I would really prefer they didn't be called Legendary and reserve that for the rare few true legendary items. Even if they are unobtainable for me, I would rather they be unobtainable than watered down. The reason they were added was because filthy casuals like me couldn't get them but that problem is kind of already solved with the flexibility of difficulties (and LFR). Blizzard seems keen to keep adding big long solo campaign like questlines so I am not sure why it doesn't end with something truly legendary.
My classic guild got 2 atieshs, second one was mine then we quit until TBC, very grateful for everyone who only stuck around just to finish it
Everytime I hear Thori'dal, I'm always reminded of how I was promised it since it was my first run, BUT THEN, it was given to the other hunter who joined in the middle of the run.................... I haven't seen it drop since that day.
Even as a hunter, hunters were annoying during loot distribution

Interesting thing about Shadowlands is that it appears that it’ll be the first xpac to have a legendary weapon as a straight drop since TBC with the new legendary hunter bow that will drop off of Sylvanas in the Sanctum of Domination raid.
In Vanilla there was also Andonisus, Reaper of Soul

@@HavocHounds1988 I think so, if I remember correctly it was only available from the demon you fight in Strat as part of the questline for Atiesh, and would only drop if you disarmed him which you would want to do since he hit very hard.

Since Blizz squished the levels i feel like they should have made all the legendaries max level items and be completely viable in current content. But then again we can just transmog them now so ya.

they started as coveted items that took incredible luck and grinding to get. now they are something everyone has and most people find boring.
untrue, old legendaries are mostly just stats stick - but more recent legendaries change the playstyle of your class and build most of the time, like the chain heal / lightning shaman legendary in shadowland.
Sounds like a good allegory for wow as a whole

@@ninjaman0003 except it isn’t “most”. Most implies a majority. Idk many people who have a problem with legendaries in SL. Everything needs to be equally attainable now or people get angry and modern legendaries are.
@@iHaveGrudgeAgainstUT So recent legendaries have become what raid tier set bonuses were and/or azerite armor was. I'm not against having something change playstyle but let's not pretend they aren't a substitute for things that were taken out of the game, tier sets/azerite armor/legion legendaries. Everything is a stat stick, what made legendaries legendary was the rarity/grind behind them which made them unique. Its nice they became more obtainable/beneficial but along the way lost what made them special.
I kind of miss the class specific legendaries with the epic quest chain attached to it. Sadly theres no way they would do that nowadays.
Yeah, the focus of the game has shifted away from that. It's more about endgame raiding and dungeons now, and the idea that they'd force you to go through a whole long questline for something that is going to be BiS and almost required if you want to be competitive in raids is unthinkable now. It's a valid reason not to do it, imo, but it is a little sad as a casual player not being able to experience something like the Shadowmourne questline for myself.
I always wanted legendaries for everyone in old expansions, for example im wotlk you were automatically god tier end game if you were able to wield frostmourne
Missed one fam. In the final fight to obtain Atiesh you can disarm the boss and pick up a legendary 1h off the ground and equip it.

Dragonwrath story overall and the Nexus challenge was great! Tarecgosa's whispers when having it equipped were a nice touch aswell.

when talking about legendaries that disappear you forgot the sword you can get from the Atiesh quest (I wrote the name completely wrong I know) from the demon boss.
Cata was the last exp with real legendaries
I remember talking to a priest in my guild (what up Wintersong?) about late game epics and legendaries being replaced
within the first few quests I'm BC. It was a head scratcher at the time.
I actually enjoyed the Black Prince questline for the MoP legendary :)
As you included the Legendary weapons from KT in TBC you should have included Andonisus, Reaper of Souls from the Atiesh Boss fight.

The Ateish demon fight had a legendary sword that dropped and can be picked up for the duration of the fight in Strath.

I'm happy to say I have Shadowmourne. Its the only actually legendary item I own outside the Legion legendaries.

I gave up on shadowmourne because that blood queen part where you have to bite people and do that part to infuse the axe was a nightmare
Being a Rogue Thunderfury And The Warglaives were a wet dream. I only managed to snag a MH Glaive when it was current content. Never seen a Binding dropped in Vanilla. Quit wow in Wrath before Trials of the Crusade raid went live.

wait your including the legendaries from the kael fight but not the legendary sword you can use in the final attiesh cleansing fight for vanilla?
I preferred when legendaries were exclusive. Even though I never got one, it was still super cool to see them in person. They were trophies and that is what they should’ve been to this day.
Yeah the bow from TBC had such a huge amount of damage to compensate for the fact it didn't use ammo, and thus could not benefit from high quality ammo.
So if they were to let it use ammo, they would have to balance it's damage around it, or it would be massively overpowered.
Which ones of the old (pre-legion) legendaries are still obtainable? I know TF, sulfuras, shadowmourne, and daggers in cata, as I was working on those. Any others?

You mentioned the temporary legendary weapons that dropped and were usable during the Kael thas fight in tbc, but you did no mention the temporary legendary weapon that dropped during the atiesh fight in vanilla. RIP
Vanilla is easily my favorite method. The Legendaries are supposed to benefit the guild they are in entirely (and Sulfuras is a meme I guess). That way it could be a rare drop that everyone would be excited for as it meant that guild got stronger.

I like the way to implement Legendaries like the Fangs of the Father. An initial start, some really cool Lore-Quests.
But I don't like the idea of class specific Legendaries. This way they have to go with Spec-Specific Leggy because otherwise most specs won't be played.
If I think about it I kind of want something like the artifact weapons. But behind Solo and Raid Content with a Questline through the content.

It always surprises me that when talking about Legion-daries they never mention the game Destiny, which was published by Activision. They took the system for legendaries (“exotics” in Destiny terms) and copied it wholesale into WoW. They even had a nod to the weekly exotic vendor in Dalaran. Xur in Destiny was a vendor who came every weekend for a limited time and sold a few specific legendaries each week. It was always a big thing what xur was selling each week because it was the only non-rng method of acquiring them. In Dalaran they added Xur’ios as a vendor who sold legendaries.
It was a fun crossover as someone who played both games, but it was a godawful system. In Destiny, the Gjallerhorn was THE best exotic weapon you could get, and it was purely RNG if you had one (unless you bought it week one or the final week before D2 from Xur, cause Bungie are trolls). It didn’t matter if you were a good player for a lot of groups. No Gally? No invite.
Andonisus, Reaper of Souls were legendary and if not mistaken, elementium bars were legendary.
I believe enchanted elementium bars are indeed legendary, but there's several other gathering/crafting materials which appear as legendary, so that'd be quite a bit to go over all of em

I'd like to see some kind of looooong class specific quests, to create a legendary gear piece.
There was a few in classic, but usually only rares. Such as the lv20-30 hammer for paladins.
People in retail don’t want that shit anymore and that’s just all there is to it.

I like the SL legendary system. I understand people that dont but I think it’s just fine. Everyone in retail imagines they’re gonna be the next #1 in the world and get pissy if everything they need to accomplish that isn’t easily attainable. So even though I think long drawn out legendary quests would be cool, I don’t mind the current system either, and I understand why things are the way they are.

It should matter I think. True, it's only a limited legendary item that can only be obtained and used in Stratholme for a few minutes but so are the legendary weapons on Kael'Thas, and they were mentioned in the video.

Can someone explain why the tool tips on old items are wrong? At 5:04 he says the legendary bow has much higher damage than the next strongest bow, but the actual stats on the tool tip show the epic bow as much much stronger even though I know that's not true.
It's sort of annoying to not even see the real stats of the featured legendary.
I just used whatever wowpedia had for the weapons. My mistake for not getting time appropriate versions, as each weapon was from a different stat squish

@@hirumaredx use wowwiki, and if necessary roll back (though it hasn't been updated in forever since wowpedia largely replaced it, so most of the stats are correct).

You missed Andonisus, Reaper of Souls if you really want to count that as a valid legendary item.
You should use the tool tips and stats for the items as they were during the expansion in which they were obtained... Your example of thori'dal the stars' fury @5:05 makes no sense contextually because the stats on the golden bow of quel'thalas actually beat thori'dal, the stars' fury in the example you provided on screen...
You should have used original stats of the items. Especially since TBC classic is coming
I wonder if Blizzard will add a item type above Legendary, not that I don't mind Legos. However, since Blizz went full Opera on us with Legos, they kinda don't feel Legendary anymore (Also probably due in part to "Choreghast", which isn't bad, per se. But I feel that farming instances that gave you more than 1 reward: Raids, Dungeosn, etc. Are a much more rewarding experience than just farming an instance for only 1 reward, imo). Probably will never happen, but eh.

it might have been the popular opinion to give everyone a legendary back then but personally, I liked that only very few players had legendaries back in the days as it in fact made these items legendary. sure maybe if I were a progress foused player who cares about his stats I would have complained but i wasn't I just admired those carying legendaries
That's something GW2 fixes. Everyone can farm the items with the best stats just for minmaxing. But then there are also legendaries who take a few months to gather each for most people. They have the exact same stats as the best gear that is easily obtained. But as a bonus their stats can be freely and free changed to how you want to play at that moment and they also have an upgraded visual style showing effects around your character.
And also ofc that if you had the gear with the best stats when the game launched, that is still the gear with the best stats today. No rng, no rat race, no resets every few months. Some games don't rely on abusing their player brain's weakness to constant small dopamine shots to keep them paying a subscription.
You should use stats from the expansions the legendary is from instead of current after various stat squishes etc. You said legendary bow has more base dps than other epic bow and epic bow on the screen is better.
The only thing I didn't like about the mop cloaks was the fact you had to PVP to get one of the steps done
it was very little PvP though and PvP was in a really good state to play too at the time
I think the main reason for level squish was someone at blizz could not do the math.
I still think I can complete the Legendary Cloak questline. I know I can still complete the Legendary Ring one.

Urban myth. Thoridal does 165 dps. Golden Bow + Timeless Arrow is 152 DPS. Do the math.
You forgot one legendary from BC:
Ashes of A'lar
It wasn't legendary quality. The only legendary mounts were the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal and Peep's Whistle (which was only ever datamined, but became Ashes of A'lar eventually)

What I always ran into. I’d help someone farm their stuff and get whatever. With the mutual agreement we’d help one another. Never would fail. They’d log off and rarely get back on that toon. And they’d always give you some BS. In the end. Never help lol
Small drop chance is only proper way, long quests make legendaries a chore and Everyone can have them with is not what a legendary is supposed to be
