The title has both of those meanings you mention. Another great Canadian singer-songwriter, Leonard Cohen, is the man being referred to. The woman is thought to be Cohen's mother, and you are right about the double meaning of "a mouth like yours". Mitchell is playing the dulcimer, James Taylor on guitar.

It was actually Led Zeppelin who were obsessed with Joni. Their song 'Goin to California' has some direct references to her. But it can generally be said that everyone who appreciated great poetry and songwriting were drawn to her because it became clear by 1972 and 73 that she was going to be at the vanguard of creativity as a singer/songwriter and that she would continue to set new standards. As far as lyrics go, she is untouchable.

Joni Mitchell got the "Urge for Going" in the mid 60s where she flocked to NYC to be a part of the folk music scene which was exploding in the coffee houses and taverns. In 1970 she migrated to California to become one the voices of the hippie culture and make Los Angeles her permanent home. Her third studio album, Ladies of the Canyon, chronicles her experience of living and loving in the hippie enclave of Laurel Canyon. It was a remarkable and transformative time for her and her art. Still me favorite period of Joni's work. ❤

Joni Mitchell is one of the best singer songwriters of this generation, all of her songs are life experiences and most of her albums tell stories, just great lyrics and she’s also paints or did in her early years, if you haven’t listened to River yet, it’s definitely worth it

Her writing, music and singing are masterclasses in composition. The definition of perfection. Appreciate that you have the lyrics to refer to, so you get the complete message, metaphors and feeling that she was trying to communicate and invoke. Also, nice to see validated that her amazing body of work still has the same effect and power to move people today that it did when I first heard it in 1971. Obviously you’ll need to react to more from her vast catalog. I’d suggest if you haven’t reacted to them yet “Both Sides Now” and “Help Me” which have great lyrics. BTW Just subscribed.

In the 60s, 70s the TV stations via the "Air" (before cable) went off air usually at 12, on the weekend at about 2:00 AM, and the station would turn white grainy or BLUE, according to what TV you had. So, she was there in the wee hours of the night/morning.

Seeing a lot of folks say it’s Leonard Cohen and I thought like you it was Nash because of the timing of the album release related to her breakup. But does it SOUND like Nash? In River, she talks about “losing the best baby she ever had,” and I feel like I’ve seen interviews where she admits he may have been the love of her life and she may have been the one to mess it up with her independence and striving for the ideal. But it DOES sound like Cohen, a good guy AFAIK but you can see much better how this song would fit his more morose, cynical view of life.
