    Give him just a stick, a piece of wire and a can. He will start to play a concert within 3 minutes, for sure. That's a kind of art, musical mimimalism, deeply rooted in the blues. Justin is living that feelings.

    I started watching Justin several years ago, mainly because of videos of him playing shovels and the like. I recently got into Cigar Box Guitars (CBG), bought my first last year, just had a second one shipped last month. This has led to many CBG playing and build videos, and in that wormhole, you run into Diddley Bow playing and build videos. And here I am.
    Hopefully someone still sees the comments, as I can see this is from 10 years ago. I thought I would comment anyway, and say thank you for all of the content you put out there, it is very much appreciated.

    Interesting ...one thing according to Billy Boy Arnold how Bo Diddley got his name was from one of the Chess Brothers ...I think it was Phil and they were recording the song Bo Diddley ..... Billy and Phil got to talking and Phil asked Billy what does Bo Diddley mean and Billy told him it means a funny guy like a clown....so Bo was expecting the record to come out with Elias McDaniel as the Artist but Chess had other ideas...and called him Bo Diddley....and that's Chicago History as I remember Billy Boy telling me

    Great music on something so basic, a testament to your talent mate. I noticed that you bought your diddley bows from Tasmania in Australia and in the background I also noticed that you had an originally Australian biscuit company's biscuit tin, Arnotts now owned by Campbell's. The logo still has an Australian Eastern Rosella parrot.

    I remember a long time ago I had a not very good acoustic. Well it only had one string left and I was too baked and lazy to ever get one. Fingers got kind of bloody but eventually I can play about a hundred times not as good as you can

    The diddley bow was an imitation of one stringed West African instruments. African Americans did the same with the banjo. Early blues players were black.

      I like to use a wound A String from 6-String pack, or a large diameter unwound string such as a .020-.024. If your string is sounding dead through the pickup it might also be because you string isn't close enough the to pickup (if it is a magnetic pickup). I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions :)

      1958wvpicker You should check out Dan Sleep's new line of flat pickups at www.HumidorGuitars.com. They are specifically designed to be easily installed under the strings without having to cut a cavity in the instrument's body to accommodate a magnetic pickup. You can also easily adjust the height by adding a shim underneath the pickup if necessary.

      heyu vwpicker. greetings from a valley near frankfurt am main.
      a dull sound may come from something as little as using too soft of a material for the bridge or nut. metal, bone and glass work fine, wood is too soft.
      cant say much about pickups, only, that i like the sound and simplicity of what it's inventor calls the "flatpup". i only used a piezo so far. it doesnt sound bad, but really doesnt like much overdrive. the best sounding of 3 diddley bows i have made so far, is a thick-walled tube of bamboo, and a very thin fish can on a piece of plywood with a hole, kinda like a resonator guitar.
      peace~

    A 1 string guitar is not a diddley bow !
    a diddley bow is an instrument that use the counter note as a second note, but a guitar plays only the pitched note!
    This is probably the main différence between a guitar and a DB
    This difference included the fact that a DB has a table that runs the whole instrument, under the whole length of the string, to vibrate with the pitched note AND the counter note, so, to amplified it the DB a piezo will be more accurate than a magnetic pick up.

    • @jaksilver3656
      @jaksilver3656 6 лет назад +4

      The diddley bow is a single-stringed American instrument which influenced the development of the blues sound. It consists of a single string of baling wire tensioned between two nails on a board over a glass bottle, which is used both as a bridge and as a means to magnify the instrument's sound.

    Hello! Which string is commonly used 3rd or 6th? And what note on the open string? Thank you!

    • @justinjohnsonlive
      @justinjohnsonlive  8 лет назад +4

      You can use any guitar string for this kind of didley bow, but I generally link to use the A (5th) string for a bass sound, or the unwound G (3rd) string to get a smoother sound, higher, vocal sound.

    • @gorjnjch
      @gorjnjch 8 лет назад

      Hello! Thanks for the answer! I assumed it was a matter of choice. As the string sounds on a regular guitar, so it will sound for one-string guitar. The Cigar Box Guitar, is a classical system, three-string is G - D - G. The third open string is G. Fourth - D. The fifth open string - A. Six String - E. Means fifth string is configured as an open string G, right? Or I'm wrong?
