The new alias he decided on was Nightwing, but how did he think of that name? Today, we're learning about who the name Nightwing has its roots in a Kryptonian legend, as well as how Superman himself used to be known by that name when he teamed up with Jimmy Olsen as Nightwing and Flamebird!

Why do Batman's and Nightwing's sidekicks wear bright colours while their mentors wear dark? I mean, they mostly "work" at night, when dark outfits work best.

that question has been answered in the Future's End Grayson, where in its was explained as a backstory, Actually it was batman who designed his costume bright and light
it was explained as "in order that he would be seen. If he relied on darkness too much, and someone took the darkness away from him, and he will fall, like the rope holding him up had been cut. Dick would have to earn the night. "
remembering batman adopting him when dick's parents were killed that night so that he will not be like him , an agent of Vengeance, a child cheated out of his childhood since he was eight, for he wanted dick to grow up ruled not by his own fears
and since dick, knowing this adopted this explanation/idea even to his sidekicks i guess
Hey Scott!!!!! why not do "why robins wear light costumes " huh? hahahaha i hope you notice my comment :D i;m a very huge fan of Richard john grayson

I think being the first Robin is what makes Nightwing so special. That evolution and his continued dynamic with batman is what makes him such a compelling character. Also I definitely prefer the "legend" origin of the name and the idea that it being shared to dick from superman is way cool. Great video!

I like the idea of Dick being inspired by Superman or a story of Superman's, mainly because it isn't often that sidekicks have major interactions with heroes other than their mentors. I also just like Nightwing in general.

I love Dick Grayson as Nightwing, he is my favorite DC character. It gave him an edge that he didn't have as robin, but needed as he grew up. But on the other hand I love how the Grayson storyline is panning out. It has the edge and sometimes sneaks in some robin lines to have a little throwback in there as well.

Getting into comics as late as I did, I've almost completely known Robin as someone other than Richard Grayson, thus comes with the exception of the animated portrayals (Teen Titans, the first season of Young Justice, etc). That being said I also missed Duck as Batman, though I recently went back and read the Black Mirror finding it pretty great. For me Damian stands to be my definitive Robin, even if he's been around the shortest amount of time. Every other Robin before Damian has some higher calling, while Damian is the direct son of Bruce making it obvious he'd take up the sidekick role. Furthermore, Tomassi and Gleason's run on Batman and Robin has been instrumental in doing two things: 1) humanizing both character, especially the godlike Batman we're use to seeing in the regular Batman title, and 2) showing how cool the boy wonder could be. Back to Nightwing, Dick Grayson probably my biggest introduction into comics, and more importantly the New 52. Though the art was in flux a lot of the time, Dick's pursuit to be more than just an ex-Robin spoke to me and, especially when he moved to Chicago, I always thought of him as his own person.
Oh, and as long as he gets the name Nightwing I'm okay with the story behind it.

  • @Bolsonaro_em_Haia
    @Bolsonaro_em_Haia 8 лет назад +3

I sure liked the name and the original rationale. Acknowledging Superman as a positive influence for Dick Grayson was a great move at that crossroads moment.
The costume was way too Disco, sure, but they fixed it when he changed to the blue chest wing version.

Hi, Awesome channel congratulations, just wanted to say a fun fact , here in Mexico superheroes often preserve their english names, like Superman and Batman but some secret identitys got translations back in the day, like Bruce Wayne was called Bruno Diaz and Dick Greyson was called Ricardo Tapia (today they just call them Bruce and Dick but I'll always remember them as Bruno and Ricardo), also the name Nightwing got a translation in the latin spanish dubbed Batman the animated series they called Nigtwing "Ala Nocturna", it is relly confusing for people of different generations here in Mexico to talk about those characters because now a days all superheroes just preserve their english names, but my generation still remembers the translations

I didn't know the full story of the origins of Nightwing and Flamebird, but there were some nice Nightwing and Flamebird stories in the Dollar-Size Superman Family in the late 70s. After Superman and Jimmy played the parts, two other Kandorians became Nightwing and Flamebird. With Superman's approval, of course. They made a nice contrast from the usual super-powered antics of Superman and Supergirl. Of course, Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane were doing their investigative bits in their own solo stories, but they didn't (normally) wear colorful costumes like Nightwing and Flamebird. Plus the N & F stories were steeped in the exotic Kryptonian culture and background, instead of being based in New York City or Metropolis or some other ordinary setting.
As for Dick Grayson, I think it's great that he grew up and eventually took the name and costume of Nightwing. Neither "Robin" nor "Nightwing" are better--it's the process of a single character growing and changing that makes it good. And as for his costume, the traditional outfit seems okay for a younger person, say 8 to 13 or so, but the traditional outfit was looking pretty silly on a college-age Dick Grayson. In the 70s, they occasionally showed the Earth-Two Robin as an adult, with a slightly different costume, and it looked pretty good. There was also a Robin story in the Dollar Size Detective Comics where Robin tries out a few different and interesting Robin costumes.

Good work explaining the weirdness behind the Nightwing name. I was a teen myself reading Wolfman's take on Grayson. Loved the Judas Contract. Great story and fantastic art by Perez. Good times.
I like how over the years then and since the editorship at DC has tried to tie Grayson's Nightwing together with their own inspiration of the name (Olsen & Kent in Kandor) but now that the DC Universe is convoluted with multiple retcons, I think in the future DC would be wise to establish Grayson chooses Nightwing on his own and if they want to say there was a Nightwing in Kandor or on Krypton long ago, Superman could mention it in passing but they can just say it's a coincidence now. Back in the silver age, things were different. Maybe it's a hint to temporal entanglement that reminds the current Superman something has altered the multiverse, but it's all water under the bridge now.
Going from under the wing of the Dark Knight to becoming Nightwing is not that far of a stretch. It keeps the bird motif while dropping the cutesy Robin for a younger person to take that mantle. It's easier to believe Dick Grayson would come to that name on his own than to have to connect the dots back to a version of DC continuity that frankly just doesn't exist anymore after multiple Crises, the New 52 and the upcoming Convergence. They're gonna try to say it all makes sense, but Jimmy Olsen flying around the bottle city of Kandor as Flamebird with a depowered Clark Kent in tow as Nightwing doesn't make any sense now and we all know it.
Frankly I'm sad that a lot of the stories I grew up reading have been pretty much dismissed by what's happening now, but I think trying to cling to the past is actually harming both DC and Marvel more than helping them. They'd be better served abandoning continuity entirely and only use from the past what serves their present storytelling.
It's either that, or let Clark and Bruce grow old. I don't see them doing that.

I like the Idea of Dick being an inspired by Kryptonian legend partly and cause I love stories that dive into Kryptonian culture but also cause I think Superman is dicks more fun uncle if Batman is his father.

There was actually a comic called Robin and Flamebird where Dick and Jimmy fought crime together, coming to the rescue of Batman of Superman every other day.

Robin's costume was designed for a kid sidekick. It would be hard to take him seriously as an adult in that outfit.

Would love to see a comic story where all the Robins fought each other. Dick versus Jason versus Tim.

Tim & Dick fought Jason in Battle for the Cowl. There's also the Robin War... but we do not speak its name. lol
Tim's fought Damian a few times too. Actually, Dick's fought Jason on a number of occasions...

Dick Grayson has established himself completely as Nightwing. He appears as such in Injustice: Gods Among Us and in the Challenge Mode of Batman: Arkham City.
Plus, he's also my favorite member of the Bat Family.

I liked knightwing after he toke the role of batman, that's where he's biggest struggles comes and where I thought he gave it 110% out of his mind and body to fight, but when he was knightwing or robin I felt he only gave it 70% at most of the time, because he knew that the role of batman is the most role that has responsibility in the whole dc universe.

hey scott first love the recent uploads great job man, and second would love a episode on penance from marvel. Specifacly if civil war was the first time he was used and why the creators choose to change speedball (think his first alias) always found it a huge change between the two one being very light hearted and fun and the other being dark and grim.

Bobbie Marion I think that fit the character. He went through a lot with that story.

Oh I don't disagree just found it a lil odd choice of character to use for that story I feel there might have been reason to change speedball from what he was I liked the change just wanted to know if there was another reason for it

Knowing how comics tend to work there will probably be a story where it's revealed the kryptonian nightwing was actually the Zur-En-Arrh counterpart to Superman or Dick grayson at some point.
I should probably point out that in the teen titans show Robin got the idea from Starfire when she was telling about her trip to the future.

I like the old Kryptonian legend better, but I did like how the integrated Supes and Jimmys story into as well in the Nightwing year one book. At least I think they did. I cause some trouble later when they freed Kandor but it was still a good story.

I like him as Nightwing more than as Robin, the fight for the "definitive Robin character" is between pre-N52 Tim Drake and Damian Wayne. But his new status quo as Grayson is indeed awesome, too, and could become more iconic for fans of Richard Grayson than Nightwing...

I like Grayson as Nightwing. I've always liked Batman because he has no powers so somewhere in the back of your head you think that could be me. Nightwing on the other hand also has no powers and technically isn't a billionaire which makes Nightwing even more realistic to me. Now I'm off to practice my karate chop and cool stance! lol
