I constantly get asked to explain Spider-Man's webbing. Are the created by mechanical web shooters, or are they created organically by Peter himself? The answer is both, and that's what we're learning about today! The story of how Spider-Man created his web shooters, how he gained web powers, how he lost those web powers, and why the Spider-Man movies went the directions they did!

I read that the reason Raimi went with the organic web shooters was because on top of event else, it seemed too farfetched that a teen, even one as brilliant as Peter, could create a substance like that with limited resources that a multimillion dollar company couldn't with nearly unlimited resources.

superman4u1985 and yet... He went for something that he produces from his body with a limitless amount from his wrist... For a super hero it makes sense because nobody questions a super heroes powers... But Scientifically speaking it makes absolutely no sense
I prefer the webs to be organic with the web shooters serving as a mechanism to enhance and focus them. kind of like cyclops visor.

I like both. The organic one gives Peter more of an individual feel, and makes him feel more like a superhero. Although, the mechanical ones give Peter a more "realistic" tone showing Peter's genius mind.

Except spiders don’t have the ability to shoot webs like that, NOR do they come from their wrists, hence it makes more sense to have web shooters. Also then it makes sense to have different types of web shooting abilities
@@nateb3454 I've personally seen jumping spiders shooting web. You could see the string flying from point a to point b. And it's an adaptation, spiders aren't also able to lift airplanes but Spiderman does. You don't have to apply logic to comics

Almost no other person actually knows how the web fluid is made and what chemicals exactly are. Also, A multi-million dollar company was what made the webs for Amazing Spiderman (Oscorp). You're acting like webs coming out of thin air makes more sense than a shooter made by one of the most scientifically intelligent person
If I were to write my own universe of Spider-Man, he would get organic web shooters from the bite but the mechanical web shooters are for aiming and all of the other settings
If Stan Lee gave him organic webbing in the first place, none of us would be even arguing about this

To me organic makes more sense. He's powers are a mutation giving him the abilities of a spider. Surely that would include all abilities including creating webs?
But if it was accurate to a spider, then it would shoot out of his butt... also, the mechanical web shooters show off Peter's intelligence and ingenuity. I think it 1. Makes more sense, and 2. Makes the story more interesting.

I prefer both: organic webbing after the spider bite and then as time passes he uses his genius to develop mechanical web shooters which give him a much wider variety of web shooting combinations.
I always had an idea that he had organic webbing, but he needs web shooters to sort of..channel the webs in a sense.

I'll be honest, I grew up watching the Sam Raimi spidey movies and I was shocked as a kid to see that Spider-Man didn't have the ability to shoot webs out of his wrists in other media. My vote goes to organic web shooters! Web spinning is the most iconic ability spiders(and Spidey himself) have and it's strange that that would be the only ability left out of his natural(or rather, mutated) repitoire.
Plus, it's super cool that Scarlet Spider gets natural webbing.

When I FIRST read Spider-Man, I recall some my FAVORITE extra segments being those that explained how Spideys gadgetry works.
I’d prefer a mix of both, imagine spider-man’s extra gadgets from spider-man ps4 but he also uses organic webs but I prefer mechanical webbing
The trigger is not very sensitive. It has a pressure sensative trigger that needs his super-human strength to activate it

I like the organic web shooters because without them he should just be random bug guy since powers like hanging off walls are in many other creepy crawlies. Making webs are unique to spiders

Yeh if the spider gave Peter it's powers he should be able to swing with his own webs. It makes a lot more sense than just getting stick em powers and super strength but he can shoot webs like a spider

Prefer the mechanics one, it make him feel more vulnerable. I also like how when he is broke he can't used them or run out. Which ties more of his civil life with his hero life.
How much would it cost for more webbing? In amazing spider-man he mixed that shyt up at school. I don’t wanna site that as definitive anything, but he is just a kid when he first develops them and developing a compound that works like webbing let alone 2 devices that not only shoot them but can be made to alter the nozzle for different web settings as well as the compound itself for specific types of webbing like that hydro man concrete stuff. I’m not knocking your opinion I’m just genuinely curious how much this one aspect of his life is costing him. Between normal life and spidey life he’s gotta choose between keeping the power on or food on the table or a potential life should the shooters go dry in action.

Very few spiders shoot their web out and the ones that do can only go so far before they have to be guided by the wind and producing too many webs in a single day can be a costly thing for spiders to do
Maybe peter creates web shooters and web cartridges to solve those problems and he refills the cartridges every now and then using some kind of siphon system

Those comments who said that the web should comes out from the butt of spiderman are so fucking stupid. The radioactive spider gave him the ABILITY of spider not the ANATOMY of a spider. Human bodies and spiders are different and it more make sense that Spiderman could naturaly produce his web because it seperates him from other superhero. If the webshooter could be replicate, then there is possibilities that anyone could be spiderman. I know that web shooter shows how much a smart man is peter parker, but lets be honest, the first thing that comes to our mind if we talk Spiderman is his webs and acrobatic skills and not his intelligent mind. Because if we are talking about intellectual skills, we have ironman, batman, captain america and so on.. that is why Spiderman having organic web is the best choice.
While I do prefer the organic webbing a little more than the mechanical web shooters, I feel like there should be a good mix of both.
He has the ability to shoot out webs naturally but uses the shooters for proper aiming and can use some of the organic webs for any special kind of web weapons and gadgets.
Perfect take. This satisfies both sides of the argument. Peter has a key and fundamental power of an actual Spider, as well as being able to display his scientific intelligence by enhancing and customising it with web shooters.
Well as a kid watching the movies I thought organic webs were the norm so I'm partial to them, and it makes sense a hero called SPIDER-MAN would have natural webbing to his repertoire of powers. But the web-shooters do allow for more moments of tension and cleverness. Still gonna have to go with organic though.

The organic web shooter always made more sense to me. It hard to image spider powers without the ability to shoot webs. Not to say being smart isn't cool just that it can be shown in other ways.

It's not like the spider transmitted a silk sack or whatever through the bite. To me it makes more sense that he just got the strength and the adhesive skin and then decided to make his webs to keep the theme. But that's just me.

I prefer the organic webbing, which is why I really like black-suit spider-man, as so much about that suit seems to make sense and is far more convenient, with the additions of self-repair, changing into civilian clothes, and black generally being better for stealth purposes.

The biggest argument against the web shooters is the character Silk. For those who don't know, Cindy Moon (a.k.a. Silk) was bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, and she can create her own organic webs. If she can make her own webs, why can't Peter? Shouldn't their powers be identical if they come from the same source?
That always happens though, if anyone other than Peter gets bit they get different (and usually more numerous powers) same thing happened to Miles Morales in the Ultimate Universe. The Web Shooters are iconic at this point, no need to get rid of them.
The Fantastic Four all have different powers and came from the same source. Of course would make more sense the skrulls experimented on them as the skrulls appeared in the 2nd issue.

I've always thought that Peter adjusted the web shooter's trigger in a way that would require his super hero strength to make it work, thus preventing him from accidentally shooting while closing his fingers to punch or to hold something. I remember a comic story when he had his shooters stolen, and there's a scene that shows the person struggling to make the shooter work, then finally he makes it work by hammering it really hard and accidentally getting stuck by the web that comes out.
Watching this in 2021 and we're actually getting magic webs!!

I was always more into the organic version. But now that Iron Man built his suit in the Homecoming movie. With the 1,000's of different variations of webbing. I'm totally on board with mechanical.

I’m a total entry level dude for this stuff and always figured he could form the webs naturally, with the webslingers giving it the force it needs to be flung forward.
A few of you have commented about "The Other" story arc where he apparently get's organic webbing again. I have skimmed through it but haven't found when this happens in the story. Admittedly, it's a 12-part story, so I could have easily missed it. If you know the exact issue when this happened, please let me know and I'll credit you on Monday's video!
+NerdSync I like the organic webs because it seems to fit better with Peter getting powers. His spider powers don't seem complete without webs and having to make artificial ones seems odd in my opinion

I prefer mechanical web shooters as they do seem to make more sense - If Spidey's webs were organic, they should take months to dissolve and his spinnerets should form in his butt. If spinnerets did form in his arms, they should break his veins. Also, spiders weave webs, they don't shoot them.
Spider-Man is my favorite and when I got into comics about a year ago I bought the trade paperbacks of his most important story arcs. The Other was one of them because I heard ALOT that that was when he got his organic webs. I hadn't heard of the Spider-Queen giving it to him so I'll look into that now. Anyways, The Other story arc collects Amazing Spider-Man #525-528, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1-4, and Marvel Knights Spider-Man. The TBP took me a while to find but I love it cuz it shows his marriage with MJ and has connections to Morlun and to the Kaine Scarlet Spider run, which I also have and LOVE!
+NerdSync The story of the arc is that Peter is dying from some sort of incurable disease and is searching for a cure but no one has the answer. In issue 526 of Amazing Spider-Man, Morlun catches him in public and beats him an inch from death, like dude rips out his EYE and leaves his face unrecognizable. But he doesn't feed on him there, as his kind does to spider totems. in the next issue Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3 Peter is taken to the hospital where the Captain America, Iron-Man, and some other Avengers go to check on his condition and MJ is on her way there. The doctors have isolated and temporarily stabilized Peter but his is 'prematurely fatal.' MJ goes into the room where Peter is in and catches Morlun about to feed on him and tries to stop it. Morlun easily puts her down and is about to kill her. At that time, Peter wakes up and attacks Morlun, but it really isn't Peter. 'The Other' is what is referred throughout the arc as the like the primal essence of Peter's spider powers and it is trying to convince him to imbrace it and become 'The Other.' Anyways, Peter kills Morlun, for the second time I believe, and then dies in MJ's arms. In Marvel Knights Spider-Man # 21 Peter's body disappears from the Avengers Tower and in Amazing Spider-Man #527 Peter is shown in a cocoon thing battling with 'The Other' internally and is eventually is reborn, and this part is IMPORTANT, stronger in almost every way and has organic webs. After that arc finishes I believe Civil War follow, then One More Day. Yes, he does unload his webs on Iron-Man in One More Day and quote:"ever since my webs went internal, I've wondered what would happen I let fly and didn't hold anything back..." (AS-M 544).
If Spidey's webs were organic. They should technically come out his ass like a real spider...

The only thing that bothers me about organic webbing is how Spidey's suit has no openings on the wrist area which means the webs would just build up under his gloves.
Actually, someone called "TheCandianLad" made a video called "I watched spiderman in 0.25 speed" and he saw that in the scene where spiderman land on a building with MJ we get to see for a slight moment holes in his gloves.
I like to think that the web shooters are strong enough to rip through his suit

Mechanical Webshooters is more than tradition. It shows more about Peter Parker as a character and gives more play to the mythos.

It depends how much the bite changes the recipient's DNA. The bite could also provide stingers or mutated them to a man-spider. The source of the power affects different people differently.
Sometimes, the same person could be affected differently. In a different Marvel universe, the bite turned Parker into a man-spider. Mostly determined by luck, aka whatever the writer decides.
Mutagens probably effect people differently in Marvel? Or more likely crappy character power design.

Using the mechanical even though he has organic would give him an ace in the hole when fighting as the mechanical one runs out the target might let their guard down thinking he can't hit them from that distance. Then pow organic webbing to the face.

Bruno Bahia it's not, that's just not the story, that's not who the character is, if you just want to change things willy nilly and give a big ol fuck you to the original spiderman and pretty much every other spiderman go ahead, fuck it, make his costume beige black and green! give him eight eyes, then he'll really be a SPIDER man. While we're at it, give Tony Stark a metal dick, then he'll really be IRON Man. I get that you grew up thinking that Organic webbing is the way spiderman was meant to be, but it simply isn't, spiderman is who he is for a reason, and just because you watched the Raimi films as a kid doesn't change that, nostalgia is powerful but it doesn't change who a character is or let alone their abilities (an ability set that has been defined many, many times over...with web shooters, and that's just how it is). It'd be nice if he had organic shooters, it'd make life a lot easier, It'd be nice if Captain America could fly, that'd make life easier for him, but that's just not how it is, and it shouldn't be so hard to get that, stop being stubborn, if you make a hero, you can give him whatever powers you want but Spiderman was already made to be this way. I think he should have both- the organic webs are for a life or death moment because they would probably use a lot of energy to make. With the amount of energy he uses swinging around and fighting bad guys, he would use a lot. Therefore eating ALOT. (Spiders don't have infinite webs) Plus, he never really 'exercises' that power- as you said, he created the web shooters pretty soon after he got the powers.

I personally like the web-shooters better. The main argument for organic web is “it’s a spider power, why wasn’t it transmitted to him by the spider along with the rest?” Well, what I like about Spider-man is that the spider didn’t give him “spider powers”, rather it enhanced his own abilities (sight, hearing, reflexes...) and increased them so he has the same amount of that as a spider has. Even wall-climbing is a potential ability, if you look at professional rock climbers they are able to hold onto almost flat cliffs by the tip of their fingers, that latent ability has also been developed by the spider bite.
Not being able to shoot web organically preserves Peter’s humanity and makes him more easy to identify with since it means he doesn’t have a silk-producing organ inside his...wrists? I guess. (Also, where would the web come from? Pores? Tiny wrist titties?) It’s not just a logical point, it’s also a narrative point that goes beyond adding tension to the plot, for identifiability is what Spidey is all about. That’s why he always fights with his mask on, because it could be anyone behind that mask. That’s why he has web-shooters, because anyone could shoot web with similar tech. The reader can picture themselves BEING Spiderman rather than watching Peter Parker or any of those guys. (Except that you’d need the spider sense to swing from it as he does, he makes it look easy but professional gymnasts would have a hard time following suit even with web-shooters).
Finally the shooters allow a justification for the versatility of web he can shoot, the very way he shoots web makes more sense if it comes from something he created rather than something that’s inside him - why would he have to make the same motion, how does he control the flow, speed and quality and most of all WHY WOULD IT COME OUT FROM *THERE*?_? Also as it’s been said it shows Peter’s scientific prowess and resourcefulness, and the reason why military scientists didn’t do it sooner is because they didn’t think about it, which is something that frequently happens in all fields of science (and thankfully so when it comes to military science, we already have come up with too many ways to kill each other). As for the fact that his cartridges can’t hold much, why couldn’t they? It’s liquid, and stuff take up less space in a liquid state than in a solid state (that’s why bottles burst when you let them too long in the freezer) so the liquid state of the web is a natural compressor and when it bursts out it expands due to environmental conditions causing it to solidify in certain ways. Moreover the webbing doesn’t have to be very thick, if it is anything like actual silk it is extremely strong and it doesn’t require much for a human being to hold from it.
But yeah the main reason why I like mechanical shooters (and I notice it is an unpopular opinion) is because it makes Spidey more human. Funny that most people want Peter to be more Spider than man!

I am 100% pro organic web shooter if for any other reason because the writers often use the mechanical shooters as a crutch for false drama and a reason why he can't just capture a bad-guy "oh man I'm out of web fluid!" Always hated that crap.

Organic has limits also you don't automatically piss anytime you want to and sometimes you have to piss even when you don't want to. So you have to think how organics actually works body would produce web that has to come out even when he didn't want to and limit as to how often he can use it. Spiders leave webs as a trap and wait for prey to fall into it. They might add more web while prey is trapped but limited how fast they can do it. So Spider-man would be more limited with organic webbing.
I managed to circumvent the problem in a fanfic idea where my “mainline” Spidey goes with the classic mechanical shooters, but when he meets the Spider-Man of the dimension “next door”, that one has organic.
Mainline Spidey immediately asks how the organic webs work, and the other one, due to not being a Peter Parker, gives an awkward explanation to the best of his relatively lesser scientific understanding, and admiring on how gross and weird it still feels to shoot the stuff out.
And as for the whole organic limiting web types thing, it would depend on how hard he’s pressing his fingers down.

An interesting fact (that I learned from LInkara) is that Spiderman gets to communicate with Aunt May in the afterlife who states she is HAPPY there and not so get her, making Spiderman's decision later on in One More Day all the more odd. Well, even though it’s a non-comics example, there was that time where Mr. Incredible saved the guy who tired to throw himself off a building.
Obviously mechanical is to show off peter's intelligence, but it becomes STUPID and POINTLESS when every other spider character Silk, 7 spider-womans, spider gwen, spidergirl, kaine, etc. have organic web shooters and he doesn't. It just seems like a cheap plot to show how smart he is. Everyone else has the EXACT SAME powers as him but for some reason because his smart he doesn't get any? Organic webbing has always bothered me for two main reasons: A) the placement of the spinnerets in his wrists just doesn't make sense, spiders create webbing in their abdomens, not their legs, and B) Actual spider webs don't shoot out like that, the spider has to slowly weave it.

I like combining the organic and mechanical. Peter can produce organic webbing, but like a real spider he can't shoot it, just trail it behind him as it comes out of an orifice near his ass. This is not that useful, so he learns to extract it from his bum and put the proto-silk fluid in cartridges. He then uses this web fluid in wrist-mounted web shooters he designed and built. This shows off his brains but explains why he doesn't make a fortune working for DuPont. It also explains why no one can track Spider-Man down by examining the webbing and looking at who buys those chemicals regularly.

I grew up only knowing of the organic webs from the Sam Raimi movies so when I found out that originally he uses mechanic web shooters I though "so what's his power then". Since I have learned about the other things that make him amazing, of course.
Honestly, they were brought back for the same reason Harry was suddenly alive. Joe Q wanted it that way. He gave some reasoning that Peter used up all of his organic webbing in the iron man scene. but given how poorly written that story-line and initial BND stuff was the "because i said so" argument is the only one that makes sense.
I prefer mechanical web shooters because it makes more sense than shooting out of your risk, not that mechanical web shooters seem plausible, but it at least seems "sciency", and emphasize's Peter's genius (but this is a comic book character that got the rest of his powers from a radioactive spider bite). The funny part is that the organic option sounds like something the comic books would have originated with, given how hard it would be to explain them.
How does he carry dozens of (several-story-tall lines of webbing strong enough to support his body weight)'s worth of web fluid built with the resources available to a 15 year old teenager all in small capsules on his wrist?

I really want a married Peter Parker, we have Miles, Cindy, and Miguel out there. Peter sure is doing his own thing, but he should be allowed to have his happiness back with Mary Jane. I loved Renew Your Vows and plan on getting the volume, I just wish Marvel realized how great the two worked together.

Web shooters because he can tamper with them to make different types of webbing. Kind of like all the different settings in Spiderman Homecoming when Peter unlocked that ability with his suit. In the comics he’s also made certain types of web fluids to defeat certain enemies. Ice webbing was made for the human torch, acid webbing for sandman, flame webs and sonic disruption for symbiotes, taser webbing, etc. It’s honestly a lot more practical except when he runs out of fluid, but he usually keeps enough in his utility belt to get the job done.
I've always preferred the organic webs from the Sam Raimi Trilogy. I get that making his own web shooters allows Pete to show off his scientific skills. But i do like 1 web shooter: The Amazing Spider-Man web shooters. I have no idea why but the web shooters from Andrew Garfield movies always amazed me.
I prefer Spider-Man with web shooters. Having web shooters always gave him more challenges and depth to his fights. He had to be aware of what resources he had. Many times he ran out of webbing during a battle and had to use his intelligence and wittiness to outsmart and defeat his opponents.

Never cared for the Mary Jane/ Spiderman thing. Always thought it would be much cooler if Peter fell into a relationship with Blackcat. They do play with this but see, What if Peter had a serious relationship (cohabitation serious) with Felicia Hardy. Would he have to deal with finding jewelry in the sock drawer, or wondering why the washing machine is full of $100 bills? I know they had sort of a "thing" going on but it wasnt serious and didnt last long.

I think it would make sense to integrate both ideas. Have spidey have organic webs but make them unstable such as in an explosive manner whenever he tries to activate them thus leading him to create special we controllers on his wrists enabling him to create web ropes and all kinds of webs. I present to you the Web Filters: devices that go around Peter’s Wrists (much like regular Web Shooters) that cover the pores where his Organic Webbing comes out and inside these Wrist devices are various types of chemicals and compounds that are mixed into his Webbing as he shoots it (like for example Acid for Acid Webbing or Lead for Lead lined Webbing etc) these devices also double as iron sights to help him aim his Web lines and can even help him change the shape of his Webbing on the fly (like say change into Web Pellets or a Web Parachute etc) and do so so much more. What do you guys think?
I actually had a similar idea to your combo, but with one difference: The “Web Filters” also focus the webbing into the various consistencies seen in the comics, with the actual organic webbing only coming out as the fine mist (think the original Spider-Man Noir mini-series). This would allow for the baseline of the wrist-mounted devices to act as a focusing nozzle to help make the organic webbing useful for more than just making web nets, with the natural improvements you listed being added later as Spidey needs to make them.
I remember organic webs in Spider-Man 2099 (done in the early '90s).
This would predate both the movies and Peter's mutation in the comics giving him organic webs.

Despite being Spidy fan since 70s I thought the organic made more sense. But in my day the shooters and fluid were fixed or replenished by either Reed of F4 or Nick Fury, never Iron Man. That was the days though that Spidy was a conflicted hero like Batman is. Parker was always plagued by who he could not save and those injured or killed in the carnage. There was especially a circle ⭕️ of ones he had guilt over. My Spidy days were over around the time he and Mary Jane married in late 80s until the Remei movies which I found that emotional guilt in him starting up. It could have taken off great from there. My last wish is that both DC and Marvel just stop killing the bad guys off. Spidy tried to just stop them and see them locked up - then they can come back with another plan.

In Sam Raimi's movies, they were going to go with webshooters (even check out an early draft of the trailer where we see a scene of Peter/Toby making them), but they changed it to oganic at the last minute.
I preffer the Web Shooters. Spider-Man generating his own web is kinda weird. He's shooting people with his own body fluids.

When I saw the first Spider-Man movie using webbing produced by his own spider body I thought it was the greatest idea. It made more sense than making his own webbing. I kinda questioned Parker making his own webbing formula but it's a comic book and it's fantasy. I just enjoyed reading the stories.

What if it were a combination of both, where Peter could produce the enzymes to create organic webbing, but the Shooters went into his wrist, like dozens of tiny needles, that extracted the enzymes in order to produce and store webbing? Since the webshooters allow him to produce a tonne of different effects with his webbing.
