As a PC wonk, I consider myself fortunate to be exempt from the urge to splurge it on a greenbox.
A patchbay, some audio interface I/O, and some portly rack gear will hafta do. There'll be no shortage of tea and biscuits at Studio Dw00m this week. Hurrah!

I do like what it does but more and more I feel that analog outboards (or hybrid solutions in this case) are a luxury hard to justify in the modern studio. I'd love to have the APB but I don't miss it really.

Great Review!! My hold back on this system is the Thunderbolt 2 connectors which was not specified in your review. It is certainly fine using it with an adapter from TB2 - TB3 but investing so much on such unit is kind of a concern to be eventually outdated, as TB4 is now becoming the standard. Universal Audio has addressed this by having their connectors replaceable. Other wishes for this system is to design the hardware as an open system to accept Hardware Plug-ins. Example it will be so nice to be able to drop Transformers on each channel and drive them, or simple Eq circuits which this system currently does not have. I'm referring to the almost standard hardware plugin's like "Louder than Liftoff", "HRK", "DIY Recording Equipment". It still sounds great for what it is. McDSP has been the leading analog sounding plugins developer for years and Colin McDowel is a Genius!!

I considered one for my remote truck but the rackspace and wiring requirements were outrageous. Like 50-60RU!! It sounds super good for sure. And I trust Colin's magical skills. But it's digital-analogue - and digital (or semi-digital) gear doesn't age well (I had a Soundtracs DPCII, I had a ProTools TDM system). You'll be dependent on software and drivers and 3rd party ... without the software you'll end up with a green box full of very cool, but useless electronics. I'd love to try the APB-8 though ... maybe I'm too sceptical these days ;-)

I've managed to solve the obsolescence issue by not throwing out expensive legacy hardware every time an OS jumps a version.
Focusrites Liquid 32 only works reliably up to Win XP, so it's plugged into an XP box. The 400 processor plugins attached to it are very decent quality, even if they're 32bit.
The same applies to my TC Powercore kit. It didn't suddenly become harrbl overnight, just because Steve Ballmer wanted to scratch a commercial itch. Powercore kit works fine with Win 8.1 and Win 10, although, once again, it's all 32bit. I'll keep my X8 rack until the sun goes cold, because it has a Virus vst synth , and a full set of System 6000 plugins installed. 32bit kit works fine in Mixcraft without any additional bridging software. Jbridge is free, and works with most 64bit DAWS , although some developers are finally building that backwards compatibility into their sequencers in response to users finally getting antsy about arbitrarily torpedoed software investments. Built in obsolescence is a shitty way to do business, and it never ceases to amaze me how many people play along with it for the sake of their fragile street cred..

My only concern is that (story time) I have a TC Powercore external DSP, was about £1k. After about 6-7 years it went redundant due to the tech being sold to UAD and then discontinued. Thus one OS update to many and it no long functions……
So how future proof is the McDSP? I wonder if it could have another unit that was a universal controller with all all the Adat/madi/analog I/O. You could then patch everything like you would normally and incorporate you preamps/Eq for tracking and could use for analogue summing etc. That way it could be a standalone unit.
Like a rack kemper/axe fx style physical controller for ‘hands on’ tweaking but just controlling the analogue goodness within.

@@WillyJunior oh I'm writing the paper as a student! part of my curriculum is to take a marketing course (which I found surprisingly more interesting than I thought), and I decided to write my final paper about an audio console that has the potential to track and mix with EQ and compression similar to that of an SSL, but with a lower track count and less options for routing and monitoring.
It's similar to this product, but imagine it has an audio interface and preamps (so you can track with it) as well as a physical controller (like the UC1) instead of a board-wide user interface or a digital-only plugin. The idea was to make the processing sleek and out of sight, but the controllability expandable and ergonomic. I never liked leaning over the big ol' boards, but just knowing I'm using something analog is cool. However, while researching I realize there's some questionable design choices, as well as the costs being not as high as I originally thought. But, whatevs, it's just a dream console that I decided was more interesting to write about than an automatic back-scratcher!
if any of this is a good idea though, contact me [insert company name]...

  • @cornerliston
    @cornerliston 2 года назад

Very interesting. I was interested in getting one. Not having the EQ running through the analogue process is definitely making the choice easier.
If I may comment on a side topic-this is also a good example of a GUI design that makes me feel the quality is not as good as the product probably is.
Not because it tries to look like old real gear but how they do it. It's with graphic design just as with sound and hardware: you can do it really well and you can do it not so well even if it's kind of OK.
MacDSP has a history of horrible GUI but these are on the way of getting better. Although I do think he should look further and polish the graphic design into something really good that reflects the quality of his product.
    (I know, subjective right?!)

The thing in this video is ENTIRELY different to the UAD stuff. The UAD stuff is dsp processing running plugins, entirely digital, the McDSP thing in this video is actual hardware processing, controlled via digital interface

Build your own. In fact it does exist but as you’d imagine it’s locked down to support only proprietary plugins (Waves Soundgrid) which uses a normal computer as it’s server. This space is very interesting and Mac M1 is a perfect solution if you wanted to build your own dsp server using Audiogridder or even Reaper. Not sure if AG supports Mac but you can repurpose any old computer to do this or even build a dedicated one. Some people may not want to be mucking around with this sort of stuff so you can buy a Waves Soundgrid server and use that. It is locked to Wavea and a few other plugin manufacturers.

@@kehindea thank you. I know I can use a second computer to do the job, with VEP for example. I was wondering why nobody built a hardware box to do just DSP for any plugin. The technology behind it would be just a computer but with one gol. Like a PlayStation… is just a computer for gaming only, but it’s still just a computer. I’m pretty sure it would sell very well, it wouldn’t need proprietary plugins, it could connect through an Ethernet cable maybe with Dante, and that’s it. It could have expandable ram at need, and it could be very cheap, under a $1000… Let’s call it UDSP, like in Universal DSP. Sounds good?

I don't believe in the concept of dedicated dsp outboard processors for plugins. A better alternative is in my eyes track and mix e.g. with a 32 Bit converter (e.g. the ones from Steinberg) and use your plugins in 96 kHz. Probably use the HypersonX filters from airwindows and you will have the same analog sound with no aliasing and these sweet highs above the 20 kHz Nyquist Frequency and beyond. And you are much more flexible.

Utter waste of money. 6 grand to 11 grand here in Oz. If I ever wanted to go analogue I certainly would not want to use a box that looks digital but has ‘analogue’ circuitry under the bonnet. I would rather buy the outboard gear. Half the fun of Anna Log is the physical knobs and bottoms. I am not interested in harping back to the days of analogue. This obsession is stunting development and innovation in recording technology. It’s time to start moving on from the need to have more gear that looks backwards. It’s a NO from me.

I never reads so much understanding about this product…..
This is enterré analog and it’s 500 euros a channel.
You don’t need cable, you have total recall and actually all the top pro engineer I know (yes I know CLA) told me it’s a game changer and sounds like another hardware.
With one unit you having tons of comp, saturation, EQ and the beauty is to do not having to pay for 16 different hardware unit (including the electricity bills).
No man, you are definitely wrong about this product, it’s a really game changer
And about the knobs buy a Avid programmable controller, you can map all the knobs on the console like a real console.
      Well you are so wrong

🤔🤦‍♂....No. The Cranborne Audio 500ADAT/USB is better.
The APB is $4k to $6K and its Compression and Saturation only, no EQ????
And it can't be used on your front end, nor as an insert....
its Brilliant technology but doesn't make sense at that price point.
