  • Using hoods to keep birds of prey like hawks, falcons and eagles is a practice that begun many hundreds of years ago and although it is something that is done a little less than it used to be, it remains a useful way to keep your bird calm in certain situations. In this video, Ryan explains why hoods are sometimes used, how to fit one correctly and how to train a 'hood shy' bird.

So glad I found this video! We are right at this point with our female Harris! We didn't hood from the start, which might have made it easier, and now she's nearly 2. Her message to us is clear: "Nope." I think she added a few additional cervical vertebra when she realized our plans. LOL We succeeded once and she got her reward. I'll do more of what you suggested - introducing & moving the hood around her until she begins to ignore it. Thanks!

New to your channel. Loving the content. Least your harris hawk is calm! If i did this with the ones i work with, they would have footed the hoods. I was also waiting for him to cough up a pellet any time soon the way he was rocking his head back and yawning. 😂

Hi, welcome to the Owl Adventures group. He was doing that with his head because he was attempting to straighten out his head feathers are the hood. Any video suggestions are welcome, thanks

@@owladventuresuk as much as i admire and respect hawks, falcons and eagles. I am completely mesmerised by owls, specifically the asian wood owl. Any info on them would be amazing!

@@octipuscrime Hi, we have worked with the Asian Brown Wood owl in the past and they are a Strix species which are not as easy to work with as Tytos and Bubos (for example). However, I know people who keep them so I will look into creating a video with one. Thanks

@@owladventuresuk If it makes it easier, a video on the common buzzard would be awesome. I feel they're not as common in the hobby and have kind of been replaced by the harris hawk. Maybe a comparison video or pros and cons of keeping the two birds? Many thanks 😊
