- John Lewis has used its Christmas ad to raise awareness of children in care with the story of a middle-aged man learning to skateboard before welcoming a young teenager into the family home.
The 90-second ad, entitled The Beginner and set to a cover of Blink-182’s All The Small Things by US artist Mike Geier, shows the man as he struggles painfully to master skateboarding in the build-up to Christmas.
Viewers are left questioning the motive behind his perseverance until the final scene, which shows a social worker arriving at his door with young teenager Ellie, who has arrived at her new foster home carrying her skateboard.
TalkTV's Mike Graham reacted emotionally to the advert,

What did you think of the advert?
Typical John Lewis woke rubbish.
Wholesome!! Very wholesome!!! God bless all of the children!! God bless their little souls!!! 🙏❤️🙏❤️
It's a commercial
Hiya. 'Kin 'ell, once again, John Lewis has succeeded in releasing the Onion Ninjas! They really snuck up at the end there. Thumbs up all round, imho. Stay safe. All the best to you.
Not as good as The State Media's parody!
Mike is a big softie at heart, much love!
It's a real moving advert. The Dad putting in the time and taking the injuries so he can bond with his new foster daughter and help her settle in her new home. Yes, it's a well thought out powerful advert.
Merry Christmas, John Lewis.
That's the way we should all do Christmas.
Always from our hearts.
I'm glad they showed Father figure in a positive light, instead of showing him as a useless idiot as usual.
And white, amazing.
I loved the advert. As a Foster Carer (15 yrs, 14 fostered children) I laughed. It's a lovely story. I wish it was so simple and so easy. Imagine being taken from your family, home, friends with huge disruption to school. These children aren't always grateful or happy to be wrenched from their loved ones (no matter what they've done to have their children removed). Then they're taken to a strangers home and introduced to rules, boundaries and bedtimes. Hopefully they get your name right. Hopefully they like the food you do
I worked beside a girl whose mother fostered babies. She said she tried not to get too emotionally involved but couldn't help it. You forget how attached foster parents (and their families) can get to the kids and the wrench when they leave.
Wow they never used a black man and a white wife. Well done J.L
What?
good ad glad as you say it wasn't directed by the B.E.T CHANNEL
@@sicr7373 Sneaked in? Do you think black social workers are a myth or something?
Anyone remember when Christmas used to be happy and fun
That was one of the nicest adverts that i have seen for a long time. I would call it the selfless skateboarder. Thank goodness there is still some humanity and compassion for others, especially for kids and teens who need lots of nurturing for whatever reasons they are being fostered.
For me, it's the start of Christmas when I see the John Lewis Ad. The 2022 John Lewis Christmas advert is spot on! They just 100% got this right. Well done John Lewis. 👏
Bulshit, they only want your money !
Best Christmas advert I ever saw was Sainsbury’s 2014 ad, featuring Jim and Otto during the 1914 Christmas truce.
Who needs the birth of the Messiah when you have a John Lewis commercial that has nothing to do with Christmas.
Christmas is about remembering that we need to support people who need help all year round like kids who need a loving home.
And it was a family I can relate too, good advert
Oh Mike!! You big softy!! Bless you mate!!! ❤️❤️❤️
They forgot to add " Adopting a kid is not just for christmas"
Yeah it's not really a Christmas thing as it's done all year round , I can see the good in it tho
i remember when christmas ads started in december it is getting silly now they start this early it takes all the magic out of it
You got it
The way JL treated its staff left me in tears for years.
Yes, my granddaughter can vouch for that also 🤬 what a load of **** !!
And, sometimes, the way they treat their customers.
Nice advert, but not very Christmasy ,very neutral,I think it’s sad also that they always have to just pop someone of colour in every advert just to be woke like every advert on tv at the moment
See, Mike does have a heart!
A heart of concrete. 🤣
@@martynblackburn9632 Did he grow it himself?
no, just 2 tear ducts😂
Deserves an Oscar for that one.
he's always had a heart. He cares about this country. My favourite presenter.
GREAT advert John Lewis so moving and totally free of Woke politics. Well done!
Christmas. CHRISTMAS. Where was Christmas?
A major retailer Xmas advert that doesn't feature an un-representative black/indian/ family? Wowsers. It wins the internet for that alone.
have a miserable Christmas ads, remember when ads were happy and funny.
Happy is no longer allowed.
Well done John Lewis .Makes a change instead of something political.
Are you sure it’s not political it looks political to me.
@@thomasreed49 I hate woke. But I think this is just pointing out a fact.
I'd make it illegal to even mention Christmas before December. But, that was a nice. No woke garbage. Nice one.
It's woke alright, just a different kind.
@@martynblackburn9632 Nothing woke about highlighting there are thousands of kids out there who need a loving home. Arguably, they are advertising traditional family values.
@@rp7773 Incorrect - a traditional family would have included one or two children of their own. Instead they depict a white family not having any children. Think about why they didn't show a black or mixed family?
Well done John Lewis. Nothing political whatsoever or anything based around race. So glad I chose to buy an expensive item literally 24 hours ago.
It is political !
@@leah1633 Nothing really political about pointing out there are kids out there who need loving foster parents. It *should* be universally supported because it transcends ideology since it is a value that transcends politics.
@@rp7773 i fully support it .
It is NOT something anyone should enter into because of an emotional advert
@@leah1633 you want to up your meds
After suffering their ordinary TV ads which like so many ads nowadays look as if they were filmed in Africa I`m hesitant about ever watching anything else of their`s.
My wife's cooking would leave you in floods of tears .
Ha ha, you cheeky thing.
😂 ,
@kevin the gerbil LOL 😂😂😂😂
@cliveo3 That is so sweet.. that you are moved to tears by your wife's loving generosity in doing all the Christmas cooking for you, her beloved husband. That is so lovely! It nice when someone appreciates someone elses effort and doesnt take it for granted. You are clearly 'a keeper'. Merry Christmas for 25th...and I bet your lady wife will be just as moved to tears when you do all the washing up.
At Last A Modern Old School Advert 👍 ... Nothing appeared in it that made me shout out "Oh FFS!" Well done indeed JL 👏👏👏
The most important things "kids" need through life is LOVE.
I had the same reaction, Mike. Lovely advert. It wasn't woke or strive to tick any boxes.
Thanks for your Honesty , Goodwill to everyone this Christmas time. xx
Since 2020 Christmas it has been a sad time for me and my family we lost my mum in October 2020 it was always a family event but there is a big hole in all our hearts it will never be the same to us not a happy time
Nice that we are not forced to watch mixed marriages, ethnic overbearing etc!
As much as I cried at the ad and the message, it’s not a Christmas Ad. Do this during the year, I want a feel good Christmas Ad.
that's what it was. It felt more like a public information film so it didn't really touch me but at least it wasn't woke so...
At last, an advert that is true to the demographics of British, meaning a white family, not woke at all or political. Just what people want to see. Good Christmas advert.
Unlike The Boots one which has managed to tick every box going
Well said. 👍👍👏👏
A good Christmas add ...except it had nothing to do with CHRIST mas. The only mention of anything religious was when Mike Graham blasphemed at the end of it.
@Pixie Pete the ad is simply to promote adoption as opposed to having children of your own 👍
@Pixie Pete the WEF want people to adopt . Not have children 👍
loved this advert and it pulled all the heart string so well done John Lewis for making such a valid point ❤❤👍👍
Well done, John Lewis.
My God Mike is a Human Being, Great ad.
Mike is a good person, as well as being very intelligent.
Can't tell you how much l loathe Christmas.
It's so sad how many children don't have a family or a home of their own.
London
Just a beautiful advert that touches many hearts of many people in life .😳😭 John lewis well done you got something right for once. Instead of all this woke stuff . ❤
I've watched it 3 times now and all the times mascara running.. such a beautiful humanitarian message to all... Kindness, selflessness, and compassion.. a story that most of us could do more..
Absolutely moving ! A huge percentage of the population of the UK are sick to death of woke adverts. They avoid the adverts by watching
programmes on " Catch up " so they dont have to watch the adverts. Maybe one of these days the CEO'S of major
companies are going to look at their balance sheets and realize that their adverts are "inclusive" crap. I know they have followed the trend from the USA. BUT consumers in the UK are not the same as those in the USA. Let's hope that this terrific John Lewis advert will
make others , especially the advertising agencies see sense !!
It was woke ...very much so !
It makes a refreshing change for masculinity to be shown in a positive light. Well done, John Lewis.
I first saw Christmas being pushed this year in august. The more they push the less I buy. Sick of it, greedy bastards.
This is what adverts should be about.
A possible reality situation.
Well done to John Lewis for resisting the virtue signalling bandwagon.
Yes, just plain virtue.
An example of why fathers have there own qualities that they bring to bringing up a child, and that masculinity is not toxic or aggressive but caring
Do people remember the John Lewis Christmas ad of last year? That one went down like a lead ballon. This one is so much better.
Thank you John Lewis. Thank you for respecting British people and not virtue signaling. And, for sending a great message that celebrates our British dads. You know what, you'll stand out because you are not talking down to us like the rest of the Ads do.
Well Done Mike Graham 😭 as a man of a certain age i could'nt skateboard in the 70's ,but i tried and failed 🤕,i shed a tear then as i do now with you 😮💨
A white family not having any children of their own - consider why they didn't depict a black or mixed family?
Im a greatgrandfather mike and i was doing ok till you started ,and yes it was a good ad for once
And not a mixed race home .
Similar to anyone unfortunate enough to tune into one of his shows.
Love this advert & Mike Graham too 😍
Great ad with a real Christmas message. Loved Mike's reaction great journalist and authentic human being in a world of phonys.
I must have a heart of stone. Did nothing for me.
You're a heartless brute Wayne! Hee felllll offff hissss skaaateboooard........sob.....
That as fantastic advert for Christmas doing something special for someone else the meaning of Christmas thumbs up John Lewis 👍
Well done John Lewis non political and no box tickers
Maybe it's just me,but I thought this was one of John Lewis worst ever adverts? It's a bit like watching a crap film, and thinking it's gonna get better any minute now,and it's a big disappointment? The whole scate board part went on for too long. What would of tugged on viewers heart strings would be if they took the little girl to a pet rescue centre, and let her choose a pet dog or cat?
I agree, Frank Sharpe. And I do like your idea of the "pet rescue centre" scenario.
Loved it. Make someone's Christmas.
You've got me going mate 😢😢
Very touching advert huge well done to John Lewis 👏
Doesn’t beat the old “Wooliiies” advert. You knew it was Christmas, when that came around.
Miss the pick n mix 🌹
Makes me cry too
That's a sweet Christmas ad
i've never heard of TalkTV (moved to Aus 10 yrs ago) but this grabbed my attention, lovely reaction and you have an interesting line up - of people i wont just nod and agree with, but who wiill challenge my views in a good way. kudos mate
Mikes after a radio award the soft melt
Love the advert.
I think it's great, it's what Christmas is about, children, family, love
Very surprised they werent a mixed race gay couple but hey i guess we have all kinds in our diverse society now, even straight white couples in some rare situations.
Mike should join 'just stop oil' with a crying performance like that. Way more convincing.
I just cried 😢.beautiful
Can we have Mike looking at this years 2024😊
I haven't had a telle for 30 years so John Lewis adverts weren't watch or anticipated. Great reaction though.
At the end it’s a 47 year old migrant 😁😁😁
Excellent Christmas ad as always from John Lewis. Nice one.
You are a good man
Good add, but still had to slip a couple of blacks in. Every advert, why?
Actually really nice there's NO bs unrealistic families 😊
Well done john Lewis, spot on advert
Beautiful 🙏
THE ADS THAT ANNOY ME ARE THE ONES ASKING YOU TO HELP THE HOMELESS KNOWING THAT ILLEGALS ARE NICE AND WARM IN HOTELS AT THE EXSPENCE OF THE TAX PAYER.😡😠🤬
Just donate that £29 and follow the dumb fucks who watch MSM
It made me cry too when I first saw it.
Nice ad. I liked the alternative advert for loneliness too.
I'm surprised it didn't feature an ethnic minority family. We all know that's what they love these days.
Luke 2:14
Glory to God in the highes✝️, and on earth 🕊peace, good will toward men.🎄🎁🎅
There is not a lot of reality regarding adoption and fostering in this ad. It is extremely hard, heartbreaking and most often completely thankless work. I speak from experience sadly.
It's the Coca Cola ad, that's when you know Christmas is starting 😁
Well this wasn't pre-conceived....
Bless ya Mike. Had a similar effect on me too...
Has to be about a "Emasculated Man" doesn't it Ladies!!!!
It has a political undertone .
All tv does now i'm afraid
Mike, I already had a big crush on you, particularly your brian but now I'm totally in love with your heart. You're a lovely strong gentleman 💚💙💚
Well said!
It’s a very sweet advert.
I hate adverts, do my best to be able to fast foward during programmes. (Family joke, at my absolute hate of them). As such, I'd seen the beginning, but had no idea what it was for. From now on I will watch this every time I come across it. It is so understated, but manages to convey its message loud and clear.
Some wrong here though I mean where are all the blacks !
Merry Christmas, we're all depressed and sad.
Not too many black people in it, that’s something.
It didn't do it for me. I prefer magical type ones like their snowman and those can still have an appropriate message, but this was a bit every day/ordinary looking for me with none of the Christmas magic. We all need a bit of that currently.
Gosh I also cried!
