    Wonderful project and such a beautiful skirt! One tip for home sewing beginners: You are probably making a skirt out of one kind of fabric like cotton or rayon and the ribbon will probably be made of something different, like a synthetic, so when you wash it, don't dry it on high heat or the fabric and the ribbon may shrink at different rates and develop puckering.

    • @bythebayou5351
      @bythebayou5351 3 года назад

      Prewash the fabric. Prewash the ribbon by putting it in hot water with a tiny amount of soap & swishing it around. You can avoid tangling by keeping the ribbon loosely coiled & secured with a paper clip or rubber band.
      Leave it in hot water for at least 15". Then rinse well with cool water.

      ALWAYS wash, dry, and iron your fabric before sewing.

    • @northernprovisions5679

      @@n8vgirl271 I already know this is a dumb question but as I’m watching this I keep seeing people say it.. and I am curious why so please don’t be mean, but why must you wash it before?
      Is it simply to clean it?? (Which makes sense) or is there more reasons?

      You wash fabric prior to sewing so that if it shrinks at all, it's before you made your project.

    I always.. prep my fabric by first cutting off the White stripe ends. Or ends.. Then I put it into a bucket with hot water... I let the fabric set for about half an hour...It lets the excess dye come off.. and the fabric shrink and relax.. then I dump it in my tub.. then I hang the fabric out to dry.. I do the same with ribbon expect I dry it under a hot iron.. what this does is loosen up the material. This helps to avoid the bumps you get in the piece.. giving the work a nice smooth look.. hope this is helpful !?

    Very good tutorial. Easy to follow, the only thing is that still in the United States we use inches and feet, yards. 1 meter is 39 inches not 36. So I had to get 2 1/4 yards to equal 2 meters. My mistake, I keep forgetting that every one else uses cm,mm, and meters. Thank you for making it easy to follow.

    HEY THERE, LOVE THE VIDEO. CAN YOU DO SOME CLARIFICATION ON THE MEASUREMENTS FOR THE WAIST. LET ME KNOW IF I HAVE THIS CORRECTLY...
    MY WAIST IS 50 INCHES.
    HALF OF 50 IS 25
    50+25= 75
    75/4= 18.75 INCHES
    SO I'D USE MY RULER (AFTER FOLDING TWICE, GIVING ME 4 LAYERS) I'D MARK MY WAIST PART OF MY FABRIC AT 18.75in RIGHT?? AND THEN HOW DO I ESTIMATE ENOUGH TO CUT FOR A FOOD STRIDE?? IS IT ALWAYS 15 AT MY ANKLE??

    • @Woodsie.
      @Woodsie. 4 года назад +1

      This is a good question. If the top is cut at 18.75 and the bottom at 15 the bottom will be much narrower than the top.🤔🤷🏽‍♀️

      considering she added 2 inches for the 13 inches i would think probably consider adding 4 inches myself. It does seem like how tall you are can affect how much you need for stride might be something you have to play around with a bit?

    I am working on making a friend a ribbon skirt. Q. If I'm to cut the elastic 11" for it to expand to 40," do I add a bit more for a zig zag stitch to tack the elastic together? I am thankful you explained about the hem width in relation to the waist measurements. The way you measured the line for the side seam made the A frame design clearer in my head. I hope to hear from you. Thank you.

    I notice you didn't cut the Selvedge off. In a sewing class the instructor told us to cut the Selvedge off as it has tiny holes in it from the factory; the pins leave holes in the fabric as that is the way the fabric is rolled onto a drum. I've learned the hard way and that is to cut it off or it can mess up your sewing. Just a thought.Nice work. Thank you!!!
