  • It's the impossible action that captured a nation. The 2021 Rugby World Cup has been won, and it wasn't by the team almost nailed-on before things began. This Saturday, the Black Ferns completed the greatest moment in their history as they won the World Cup in front of the biggest crowd they'd ever seen. So what went wrong with the Red Roses, and how did New Zealand seal it?

Rugby is very complicated, keeping up to date with the mens team, their play styles, player match-ups, team balance etc. It all feels like a life long hobby, you have to watch every tournament and see a teams weaknesses and how they unearth new players etc. Your work makes that so much more accessible and the dedication to both the mens and womens game is what makes your channel so special. It was indeed the best rugby match I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible from both sides.
The Red Roses were clearly the better side, but being down to 14 players against the second best team in the world at home, was just 3 points too far for them to travel.
My heart goes out to the Roses. You could see how exhausted they were approaching the final lineout having had to have worked so hard to cover the missing player. They'd lost the lineout before the ball was thrown.
Congrats to the Black Ferns though, they had an impressive tournament, played some sublime rugby and showed the world just what the women's game can produce.

The Black Ferns were up against a juggernaut and it was all these elements that amounted to an improbable victory for the Kiwis. Fantastic game, and an equally great summary! I felt for England - we NZers know the pain of having our team be dominant for a long period (...well, we used to!) without being able to bring home the silverware we wanted most (see 1991-2010). The Roses always had the most to lose from that game, and that added pressure can't have helped.

The pundits on TV just didn’t want to talk about it, presumably for fear of being accused of being overly critical of the player. All they needed to say was ‘these things happen in rugby, but it was tragic that it happened to England in this game of all games’. But it became an elephant in the room and made them look odd by not addressing the big factor.

Enjoyable video as always, and it was a good game to watch. Women's rugby is in a really great place right now and it should rightly be celebrated.
But, we do need to talk about how referees were handling head impacts throughout the tournament. We don't want every game to be reduced to 12 against 13, but player safety needs to come first. This was probably the only game in the whole tournament where a player would (rightly) be given a red card for a head clash like Thompson's. It felt like in almost every game referees were desperate to avoid giving out red cards, several times to the point of flat out inventing mitigation, and so I think the Red Roses were unfortunate to be on the receiving end when a referee suddenly decided deal with them properly. Doubly so that the referee then didn't send off Simon later in the game for what looked to be a more serious head collision (I thought Nigel Owens' analysis of that one was spot on).
But it was a really close game even 15 against 14. I think 15 against 15 the Red Roses are clearly the much better team, but sometimes these things happen.

Wow, 6 (from 7) rugby world cups for nz women now i believe. And they have only this year gone semi pro!. Outstanding fearless play to run from as many opportunities as possible, great for the game to see running rugbyvprevail over 1 dimensional pushovers which frankly are the bain of the sport. Eng deserves respect for their winning streak as they showed it a hard thing to combat. Lets hope other teams follow nz lead and promote running the ball.

England scored a lot from the maul this tournament but to call them one-dimensional is ridiculous, not least after the way they scored the first try of the final.
If they played the way New Zealand fans think they play, we wouldn't have seen Kildunne's try in the final, or either of Dow's tries against Canada. We wouldn't have seen MacDonald score four tries in the opening game and England wouldn't have scored any tries against France.

In the end it came down to the Auckland spectators and the legendary mana of Eden Park. This Park has its own spirit it is NZ hard, we will it, trust it and rely on it. The whine new this and responded. It has our spirit.
