There are so many musical ideas crammed in here, right down to the careful construction of the harmonies, that it does need repetition to 'get' this song - although clearly the sing-a-long crowd at the venue didn't have to hear it too many times to latch onto the chorus. 2) the delivery. It's not just that it's pitch perfect, or close as, and delivered on top of a long pole. It's her perfect control. If you watch some of the more informed reaction videos, you'll see the various 'vocal coaches' raving about the movement between her head voice and her street voice, but it's more than that. Her microphone technique is superb. Her facial expressions. Her breathing. She's not just a classically trained pop/alternative singer on a stick, she's a real professional. Close your eyes, forget the staging, and listen. 3) the staging. Have you ever seen something so breathtakingly bold? At the national final in Australia, it blew us away, even though it was a static presentation. Here, on bendy poles that she had to learn to perform on to a level of confidence where she could sing and get the choreography right without compromise, the song takes off and blasts us to space. There are plenty of 'why didn't she win? comments here. Forget them. The winner was a great song, and so was Norway's. It's not *ever* about who gets the most points, it's about what you bring into the world to make it a better place. Kate's song and performance were on another level, and will be remembered in a different way, which is why she won the artistic prize. Once seen, never forgotten. The audience engagement with this song gives me goosebumps. She can’t see them through the lights, everyone is staring at the ceiling to see her and yet she feels like she’s making eye contact with every single person in the room. EVERYTHING about this performance is perfection.
I was at the audience and actually you could see her very well in front of you if you were on the sitting area because that area was already much higher than the stage. You could see her way better than any other show on the final, and I think she got close enough during the spinning part that she was able to go through the lights and actually see the people. It isn't seen in the video but in real life it's without the space effects and it looks so awesome because she comes super close to the audience at the seats, it felt like she was right in your face and you could almost touch her even though she was far. It was a very magical experience, the video version is like 5% of how amazing it was to watch this in real life, it had the most audience engagement in the whole show. But for the people who were on the standing area super close to the stage, yeah they had to look up, but they were only a very small part of the whole audience.
I also imagine that singing while swaying around on a bending stick doesn't help much with staying in tune. She did an awesome job and was one of the few that sang right on pitch. She was also genuinely enjoying her epic moment in life. You just see it. She was my nr. 1 Greetings from the Netherlands
@@theeSpitzSpritz no, according to the rules if Oz wins the next Eurovision will still be staged somewhere in Europe, the aussies can choose where... so it will never be staged in either Sydney or Melbourne
She climbs it. Said it in an interview, Kate and her back up dancers have to climb up the pole and strap themselves in when they are up in position. A rehearsal clip also shows a split sec of 1 of the dancers climbing up.
I thought it was brilliant also, I was captivated and I am very particular with music. Its the best "pop" (genre?) piece I have seen/heard. Perhaps her skilled vocals and whole package were too much for some people. And she is Australian.
This fiercely talented artist knocked spots off the rest of the competition. Who wouldn’t vote for someone who can sing such a difficult song flawlessly, while strapped to the top of a vertigo-inducing bendy pole? And the stunningly imaginative staging made it the most visually creative performance ever produced on Eurovision. Congratulations to Kate and all those involved.
This is seriously one of the best performances EVER on Eurovision. That beautiful ending with Kate and her contagious smile is everything. I strive to be as good of a performer as she is.
So pretty, her performance was amazing!!! She doesn't deserve to be in 9th place. People don't know true talent!!!! Smh. It's was so beautiful I cried 😢. This performance was more than amazing!!!!!!
This is still the craziest staging that I've ever watched. The song is also uniquely written. Her voice is perfect. Everything about this performance is wonderful!
In all the years I've been watching Eurovision I've never seen anything like this. This staging was spectacular & will be remembered for many years to come. Way To Go Australia.
Stephen Podesta You don't need to mention Dami. Three years of criticizing your contestants spells an obsession with Dami that's obviously going to continue. You are as boring as you are predictable
I saw kate live in a tiny theatre in the country town where she was born. On her vertigo tour. She literally just hung out with everyone after the concert, and went to a local pub afterwards. Such a genuine human. If you ever get to hear that voice live, YOU WONT forget it. Vertigo live was incredible.
There was such a contrast between the televote and jury this year that getting equal enough votes for a certain position didn't guarantee anyone that place anymore because of how muddled up everyone else's placings were. For example, KEiiNO from Norway came 1st with the televote but 16th with the jury, so they wedged themselves into 5th overall. Whereas Lake Malawi from Czechia came 7th with the jury but 24th with the televote so they fell down to 11th. It's definitely a weird year.
From the staging, to the vocals, to the genre, to the creative mindset behind both the music and the lyrics, this is Australia's best entry sent in Eurovision so far for me, as it stands until today, May 2022, after Ukraine has won Eurovision 2022. Kate is a legend and shall forever remain one. ❤🇦🇺
I'm not kidding: This performance will be featured every time anyone does a retrospective on the top remarkable eurovision entries. It's a born classic: Both the song and the performance. Thank you, Australia!

Still made me feel proud and to show what talented people we have here down-under!! It was undoubtedly an awesome and unforgettable performance from the Aussies once again 💖
I think she eventually ranked just ninth (or 8th?) because she is an established singer and she peaked too early! People were blown away by her first performance, so the surprise effect might have faded a little.
2:10 One of THE definitive greatest Eurovision moments ever.... a mindblowing performance and concept, song is okay on its own but overall this is one of the most memorable entries of all time!
I just wanted to say that she was trying to describe the feeling of getting rid of a depression because I think many people don't know that and for me it makes this song even more special
Great job Australia. Remember when the vid of national selection came out, it was hated by many people, but now they changed their minds after seeing the live performance in ESC. Absolutely amazing, my 2nd fave after Dami Im!

This song and performance blew me away tonight! 9th place is a great result for Australia, but I still wish they would've scored higher or even won. This will forever be an iconic, defining moment for Eurovision.
The whole family voted all we could for Australia which was about $10 dollars worth. Amazing performance! Keep it up Australia. You are swimming upstream (better than all I'd say) at the moment but Europe will accept your entrance and grant you a well deserved victory one day.
Whatever happens today, I'm just really proud of this entry From 17th to 2nd in the betting odds, from borderline qualifier to one of the best performances of the grand final. Amazing, 12 points from me
To be honest she deserves more than 151 vote publicly and WAY MORE FROM THE “BETTER” VOTES. I mean how did Sweden and New Macedonia get all the 12 points I mean yeah Sweden’s was good but New Mocadonia. HELL NAW!!!
Well, if you're new to Eurovision let me tell you something: The juries SUCK lol, they have a huge bias towards Sweden. And yeah I agree, she deserved better, but this was Australia's best televote result since Dami Im which to me feels like a victory.
fun fact: this song is about her breaking free from her depression when her son was around 2 years old, and the black dress people in the background is meant to represent said depression edit: also the term "zero gravity" is meant to represent the feeling she had when she broke free from it
ROBBED!! I can't believe thid masterpiece didn't win. I literally cried while watching it yesterday, so beautiful. She was rolled onto the stage on the pole, there's a video of it somewhere
Dusk Odair
She’s saying how did they get onto those poles lol
Jumped on it from a high ground.
She climbs it. Said it in an interview, Kate and her back up dancers have to climb up the pole and strap themselves in when they are up in position.
A rehearsal clip also shows a split sec of 1 of the dancers climbing up.

How ironic when a country so geographically far from Europe presents the most EUROvision song in the contest. Great stuff from Australia!
a piece of Eurovision history that will be remembered forever. Extraordinary
I voted for this. It's a masterpiece. 9th place is shameful. This song and performance is outstanding!
Way better than Netherlands

Its all about taste but Duncan was verry good !
I thought it was brilliant also, I was captivated and I am very particular with music. Its the best "pop" (genre?) piece I have seen/heard. Perhaps her skilled vocals and whole package were too much for some people. And she is Australian.
If you take one moment and consider about the vocal techniques, this woman had the best technique. Well done!!

Hearing the crowd sing the chorus was so nice and cool! Go Australia! 🇦🇺
The performance where Australia proved that they could stand equally with the most creative performers across all of Europe.

One of the very few songs this year worth listening to. Thank you Australia for sending such a class act.
They were 7th in televoting and 6th in the jury. It was weird seeing them on 9th place despite those results but Australia should be proud.
@@DiabolicalPaperClip That mess with the stand-in Belarussian jury didn't help either, altering the results even more (Sweden ended up taking 5th).
