I think this could be the greatest GENESIS song of all. It has EVERYTHING I love about this group… Beautiful acoustic guitar, wonderful keyboards, Brilliant vocal performance by Peter Gabriel, fantastic song with both soft and loud parts, flute, an amazing story, Steve Hackett’s tapping, Phil Collins’ galloping drums, and an amazing finish. The band at full strength hitting EVERY mark. Plus, live, it was incredible theater.

Imagine. The opening track on the first album with Phil Collins and Steve Hackett in 1971! A glimpse of what was to come. Love Phil's drumming on this. Very inventive. This album is raw. Love it.

@@bobd3 Only one problem with Cinema Show… Steve Hackett isn’t featured much… so that drops it below “The Musical Box” and “Firth Of Fifth” for me… but a great song, nonetheless.

This is my favorite Genesis album. It has a raw sound and is totally unique, even for them. The whole album is amazing from start to finish. There is nothing else like it. I would highly recommend listening to the rest of it.

We never lose the need for stories, from childhood to old age, and that is what makes this song so interesting for me. Along with the whole prog music genre, we are allowed into a world of other peoples imagination and creativity. Spread out over a broad canvas of different instruments and given time to develop different themes, this music has the depth that makes it timeless. It helps that I grew up in this era and heard it for the first time sitting in a room full of friends, late night after the pubs were closed, rolling joints of good black hash. We knew that we were a privileged generation and the memories still burn like fire.

I’m happy you made the Iron Maiden connection. This was before any of Iron Maiden’s albums came out. In my opinion, the influence of song may be responsible for a lot of IM’s catalogue. That driving “gallop” is so recognizable. Iron Maiden members have stated that early Genesis were influences.

I listen to the songs you let play and I know many of them 'cause I heard the most many, many years ago. There are two songs of Steve Morse wich are, from my side, very good. I listened to him the first time in 1980. The first sonf is called "Just Out Of Reach" and the second is named "Anglefire - Far Gone Now". He writes and wrote wonderfull songs with the band "Dixie Dregs" and "Dregs". Have a good rest of the week!

This was very much a transitional song for the band. Based on a piece called F# by Mike Rutherford and previous guitarist Ant Phillips and then developed with Steve Hackett and Phil Collins on board. Also one of the first contemporary uses of 'tapping' (well before Eddie Van Halen came along!!)

It was this song and album that set Genesis on a path to win fans in Europe (Italy especially), before anyone in the UK really knew who they were. Something about the romantic, almost operatic drama behind the music and lyrics really spoke to those audiences. Musically, it's a very interesting song and was actually foundational in terms of creating the early Genesis sound. They had been working on it well before Steve Hackett joined the band and after original guitarist Ant Phillis had left, so for a while keyboardist Tony Banks was handling all of the lead guitar parts on a Clavinet run through a fuzz box. After Hackett joined Tony saw no reason to relinquish his role as a lead soloist, and the rest is history.

In 1976 I played the complete album to my cuban friend. I thought the title track had a flamenco feel that he might be enjoy and be familiar with. He hated it. He said it wasn't rock music. But he later loved Pantera and Ingwie, and yet there is a distinct heavy metalness to this that pre-dated Pantera by almost a decade. Especially, the tapping. I think he was mistaken by his first impression. To be fair, it took me around 4 listens to get it. He never got it and had enough. His loss.

More proto-metal tempo for you! Check out Return of the Giant Hogweed for more of that. Glad you enjoyed it.
Peter would give a spoken intro to the song when performing it live. He also dressed up as an old man with a mask at the end of the song, if you watch a video of the performance.
The story is about two children, Cynthia and Henry, who are playing in a country house. During their game, Cynthia accidentally kills Henry by hitting him with a croquet mallet (as shown on the cover of the album). Later, she discovers Henry’s musical box and opens it, causing Henry’s spirit to return. However, Henry’s spirit ages rapidly and experiences a lifetime’s worth of sexual desire in a few moments. He tries to persuade Cynthia to engage with him, but the noise attracts a nurse who throws the musical box at him, destroying both the box and Henry’s spirit.

I first witnessed this live as a 15 year old in 1972 in London . To be honest I wasn’t sure what I was watching especially when Peter did the Old Man scene with his mask and a Sport Light on him singing Why don’t you touch me touch me touch me now now now now!!! Absolutely brilliant still sounds relevant today after all these decades 🎸🎶🎤🎹

Again live this is just spectacular. Steve Hackett still does a brilliant live rendition of this in its entirety. Genesis incorporated this into their old medley on 1992 Tour with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway/The Musical Box ( closing section ), Firth Of Fifth/I Know What I Like. Again as they had such a large catalogue of music they tended to chop up the old songs into a medley. Still a great early Genesis track and fan favourite.
