He plays with feeling and lets all parts of emotions flow through his fingers into that guitar. Sometimes a note might sound a little off or ugly but part of everyone is a little twisted and ugly but for the most part its beauty and happiness and hopeful and it comes out as his way of telling the world speaking through is guitar. A lot of people shred but they don't say anything. He's singing and crying through the guitar and everybody can understand that language because the guitar speaks a universal language.

Agreed, but it’s like the Zappa dessert course. I’d suggest Biz, or anyone beginning their Zappa journey to start around 1973-76. Of course their is much good material long before that. The Overnight Sensation and Zoot Allures albums are approachable and popular, which makes them a good jumping off point IMO. The Sheik Yerbouti album is a good prelude to Joe’s Garage IMO. If your sensibilities survive that you can enjoy Joe’s Garage I and (perhaps) handle parts 2 & 3 😮

Guitarists like Zappa are one of the reasons I've always said it's impossible to have a single GOAT guitar player. There's just too many to pick just one. And it depends on what kind of music you enjoy also. I'd definitely list him as one of the greatest. He's definitely unique and his band is as good as it gets as far as talent goes.
Glad you got to check him out.
Another great, but underated guitar player is Frank Marino ( Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush). There's a video on RUclips of him playing the hell out of the song Johnny B Good. And another from the Midnight Special show of them performing I'm a King Bee. He's one of my favorites.

Zappa was an absolute master composer. He was great guitar player. There are other players that played rehearsed solos that sound better, but Frank's solos (like the one you shared) were always ad-hoc. I'd rank him with the best of them because he had the balls to play what he felt in the moment instead of playing a rehearsed solo. If you wanted to see a band actually playing live with no backing track, Zappa was the one to see.

His style is unique and instantly recognizable after just a few notes, and absolutely no one else sounds like him. I feel that way about Richard Thompson as well. The two of them work in completely different genres (Thompson is a singer-songwriter whose roots are in early rock-n-roll, traditional music and the 60's folk revival) but their playing is so personal and technically unassailable that it stands completely apart.

FZ (R.I.P.) and the "Mothers" were/are great musicians. Sometimes a little weird but always straight out - that's what I like although I discovered him and the "Mothers" late for myself. Thanks for sharing @BizMatic and best wishes @all from hamburg (germany)

Zappa was a guitar innovator. He made every musician that he hired better. His ability to improvise was unparalleled in terms of his playing. Far ahead of his time.

As much as I love Vai's playing and therefore the early 80s Zappa incarnations, I think Frank's own playing was at its peak in the last few years of the 70s; some of the '77-'79 shows are just incredible in their intensity. Also, the synergy in the band when you had Belew, Mars and Bozzio all just fucking killing it behind Frank was almost beyond belief.

Frank Zappa is a member of a very small group of artists known as "one of a kind" and "genius." That small group would include Prince, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis...you get the idea. But as a guitarist he's on our "Most Underrated Guitarists-12 of the Best" video and he's one of a small group of guitar players with their own "Best of" playlist on our channel. Honestly, much like Prince, we don't care for much of his music but then we love the rest and especially where he solos. Great, great player and brilliant composer and the man was a deep thinker. Would highly recommend watching his testimony in front of Congress about censorship that's easy to find on RUclips.
