Yes, Zappa on guitar. You've got to realize one thing about Zappa, there were no rules. You could expect him to do anything at any time. He played in literally every genre. The guy wrote for band and orchestra, jazz fusion, rock, pop, funk, punk, orchestral, musique concrete, you name it. Master of satire, lyrical insanity, and beyond. There was only one and will never be another one, Zappa. RIP, maestro.
In the late 70s and 1980s yeah , he improved massively when he was seriously injured in the mid 70s , he didn’t have much to do so he practiced a lot when previously he wasn’t that interested in pushing his limits as a technical player too much.
I saw Frank live 5 times. There has never been a group of better musicians assembled. He was a demanding boss who knew how to bring out the best everyone in his band had in them.
This man was a musical genius. Over 60 albums and produced every one of them himself. Hated mainstream and BS in general. Was a shredder too. Love some Zappa! RIP
FZ was a musical genius who really didn’t give a shit about vocals. He considered them filler. It was about the music. He could also play the shit out of the guitar.
Don't underestimate Zappa on lyrics, he definitely used them to make social points and loved adding humor. Frank didn't do things half assed. He totally cared about vocals, had incredible singers and demanded good performances.
Frank's a tough listen if you're not ready. A genius really but few people could get past the tongue in cheek, improvisational, multi-genre, edgy, jazzy, risque' brand of music he produced over the years. Btw Wayne Shorter just died. He played on "Aja" song by Steely Dan. He played that gorgeous sax you heard in that song. RIP Wayne Shorter.
One does not simply start listening to Frank Zappa. You need to find your entry point into his vast catalog. Once you start to understand what he was about, the rest will reveal themselves to you. Start with Black Napkins, Regyptian Strut, and Peaches en Regalia. Then start with stuff off Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation to warm up to the vocal tracks. By then you’ll be all in for Zappa’s genius.

This was the second time George Duke was in Zappa's band. The first was about 1970 or so when Duke won an audition against stiff competition. Duke came strictly from the jazz & classical world and later said Zappa immediately started turning him on to blues and rock. Duke was resistant at first.
There is a difference between making "beats' and seeing how far you can push musical limits. Frank took it all to the extreme but still kept in mind that what he was doing was entertainment. I got to see Frank in concert two times, amazing and yes Frank was the guitar player.

Ok...you did it now. The entire "Apostrophe" album...genius level writing and only the absolute best players of their day. Believe it or not, Zappa was heavy NO to drugs. You couldn't be in his band doing that.
Frank was famously Anti-Drug. If you were in his band and got caught using drugs you had two choices, window or aisle seat for your ticket home. Frank is the guitar player, and composer.

Finally… you may not realize it but today you guys have reacted to two of the most underrated guitarists of all time; Frank Zappa and Terry Kath. Terry unfortunately didn’t live in the spotlight long enough to be fully appreciated and Frank’s lyrics and complicated compositions kept many from listening to a lot of his work. Both were absolutely amazing at their craft. Frank was a musical magician!
You guys definitely gotta do more Frank Zappa! Apostrophe is a must (album is bomb). His live performances are also some of the most entertaining you’ll ever see
Worth a subscription and like just for having the flexibility to do this. Lucky to see him live twice in the UK. I truly believe that - like many of the great classical composers - his music will only be fully recognised and appreciated a long time into the future.
Genius, bizarre, humorous, serious, drug free, creative and talented are just a few ways people describe Frank Zappa. Cosmik Debris, Joe’s Garage, Montana, Willie The Pimp and Stink-Foot are a few of my favorite songs out of many Zappa classics. Hope to see you react to some of them. ✌🏻
It’s all subjective. It’s one of my favorites. Great band, great song, great solo and great recording. I like it a lot more than the video from the Palladium (I was there for 3 shows) that seems to be more popular.
I got to see him live. His shows were great bits of musical wizardry. ZAppa was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. Muffin Man was often done as an encore.

Frank tried on every night to play a different solo and a different style for each song and as he used to say, when he was out there he was out there alone... Just him challenging himself and the universe. His solos make sense from start to finish, he is one of the greatest improvisational composers of the modern era.
The drummer on this (Terry Bozzio) is the best drummer I've ever seen, by far. He's just frighteningly good. And Zappa didn't do drugs, by the way. A lot of people assumed he did because of the way he looked, but tobacco was his only vice. Edit: Oh, and make sure to hear "Inca Roads" - it grooves HARD.

This track has Frank on lead guitar. He has had Adrian Belew, Steve Vai , Matt Guitar Murphy and other greats. Frank was phenomenal playing lead as well. Great tune
Very much enjoyed your reaction guys! I’ve been a Frank Zappa fan since 1971, when I first heard him, back in Germany. You gotta listen to, or watch the live “Inca Roads” performance of The Mothers, with George Duke on the KEYBOARDS. I promise, you won’t regret. Take care, Michael!
You both are rollin hard core now.😉 Whoever recommended this masterpiece deserves a shoutout! Saw this tour, and never thought “Muffin Man” would appear on anyone’s radar. Frank shreds. Btw, try “Yellow Snow” when you get the itch for more Frank. 🤘😎
I love seeing your reactions to Frank Zappa. He is the most underrated guitarist ever and a musical genius. Unfortunately you won’t be able to see him in concert. FZ died in 1993, sadly.
Great reaction; Zappa was a musician’s musician, and he only played with the best in his band. Too many albums (60+), whole albums best, but easier way in is ‘Yellow Snow Suite’ on ‘Apostrophe’, or ‘Inca Roads’ on ‘One Size Firs All’ (side 2 of which is sublime).
So many great musicians went through ZAPPAS BAND it was incredible...FRANK ONE OF THE GOATS ON GUITAR. Terry Bozzio on drums one of the greats...also ZAPPAS BAND doing the WIPPING POST is classic...LIVE! 1984
I was in 8th grade in 1979 when I first heard this. It changed my life. Many years later Joe Walsh summed it up for me when he said, paraphrased, musicians in this time were testifying. Testifying. And that was Frank himself on guitar. Heard a lot of Zappa in my life...this is my favorite recording of a Zappa solo. Terry's drums. The whole thing. A testimony to sound and creation and what Frank wanted to say. Of myself I say there is not, nor ought there be, nothing so exalted on the face of God's great Earth as that prince of foods...the muffin.
Musical Genius Frank Zappa, prolific and obtuse all within the structure which was Franks's vision and musical mind. There likely will never be another Frank Zappa !
He was a great composer, musician and innovator in recording techniques. It’s great to see this generation viewing Frank with an open mind after the widespread derision he received from the press in the 60’s and 70’s. A lot of people never heard him because his music wasn’t played on the radio and he had a lot of bad press so a lot of people who never heard Franks music didn’t like him. It’s great to see the music live on. Maybe history won’t see us as the weirdos.
- For quintessential Zappa finesse: "Peaches en Regalia" (instrumental). - More ripping/groove: "Willie The Pimp". - Be "forewarned", Zappa has a WIDE range of creative/musical offerings! Enjoy
Zappa was one of the most-serious musicians who never looked like he took anything seriously. The guy was a composition machine though; he'd be writing music constantly: at home, on the bus, before and after shows. All self-taught too.
No drugs involved at all. Frank lived a clean life in that respect. He was just a wild man who could not be constrained to conventions! And a musical genius.
I like that you listened to the studio version first, but check it out in tge live version too, it here on YT, and all done without drugs, just black pages! Zappa Lives!
Check out their earlier album "We're Only In It For The Money." The album cover is a spoof on The Beatles "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," but the music is all pure Zappa.
Hi guys, one of my best moment when i lived in 8:31 US was to see Zappa performing live in the 80's i think it was in Jersey Arena. Concert of wel over 3 hours. Remarkable he never advocated the use of drugs and by his own statement never made use of it.
Frank made 62 albums never drank or did drugs but he smoked cigs constantly even on stage. Gave a brilliant speech before the House committee on free speech, worth a watch. Dinah Moe Hum should be your next listen and you'll hear free speech alright and he doesn't swear once.
It is said that at interviews for positions in the band , instead of classics or current pop tunes he would ask them to play things like "The captain crunch jingle, as though it were jazz" and "Beathovens 5th as Regae". You had to be at the top of your shit to impress this cat.
You guys need to dive down the HUGE Frank Zappa hole. He was a very interesting & influential industry giant with a prolific catelog. He was all about playful, profane, diverse and innovative compositions with totally complex rhythmic components. He was also a brilliant composer whose bands were technically excellent.
I remember as a kid, probably 14, hearing this for the first time. I had just started playing drums about oh, maybe a year and between the George Duke keyboards in the beginning, the Terry Bozio drums, and that ripping ass Frank guitar solo I was mesmerized. I didn't care if he was singing about carrots in love, that was badass! So, not sure the lyrics deserved the music behind it, but who cares!? Did you hear that solo!? 😏
Frank never took drugs, and made the band sign a contract that if they get caught on drugs by him while in session or doing live gigs, he would sack them, so NO DRUGS or you're OUT BUDDY!!! That's one of the things that make him stand out for that time period, which was flooded in every drug you could think of.
If you enjoy George Duke, be sure to check out Zappa's live performance of Inca Roads. (This was a live recording from where the riff started. The intro is a studio recording added later. And yes, that's FZ on the guitar alright.)
First time I heard and saw f.z.live i knew i had outgrown the ordinary that was 50 years ago still my favorite guitar player that tone and mid honk like an ice pick to the forehead

Thats the genius of Zappa. I own everything I can get my hands on or afford by him. And still collect more. Jim
George Duke was in Zappa's band for several albums.
Gotta hit his early stuff too: Trouble Every Day is a great song.
This song takes me back to 1976 when I listened to this with my friends. Thanks a lot for this reaction!
Terry Bozio is a monster drummer. He was just a kid when this was recorded.
Genius composer.
Genius of boring ugly assholes
Now you've done it! You've broken the Zappa seal. You'll never be the same again. Prepare to be fascinated if you pursue this artist.
They were killing that jam...sick guitar tone
He liked to mike a pignose (small practice amp) to get that sound
@@dereklloyd381 nice to know
First time I heard and saw f.z.live i knew i had outgrown the ordinary that was 50 years ago still my favorite guitar player that tone and mid honk like an ice pick to the forehead
Watermelon in the Easter Hay!!! Joe's Garage as a whole is a Start to Finish listen!!
That's a great example of why you need to see the live performances of Zappa. Franks guitar almost has to be seen to be believed
