He had George Duke (keyboards) and Jean Luc Ponty (electric violin). The solos in the middle of 50-50 are amazing! His live shows would have a horn section, marimba (Ruth Underwood), multiple key boards, multiple guitarist and multiple percussions. Some of the people who played with him were top shelf artist in their own right! His son, Dweezil, learned Franks technique for playing guitar and tours to this day! Can’t wait!

The drummer on this particular piece is the legendary Terry Bozzio. It was Terry who famously was the first to play a piece of music written, by Frank Zappa, for drums and melodic percussion instruments called "The Black Page". This piece got its name by the fact that there are so many notations on the page that it appears to be all black. Tony worked on the piece 15 minutes per day for two weeks. For fun, also check out photos of some of the outrageously huge drum kits Terry was famous for playing.

Odd starting point for you with Frank. He wrote over 1,400 different pieces of music, by his own count, ranging from rock stuff like this, to blues, to classical, to big band, to electronic, to doo-wop, to just about anything else you can think of. Listen to Watermelon in Easter Hay. Listen to Peaches En Regalia. Listen to Inca Roads. Listen to Bobby Brown (the version on the Sheik Yerbouti (pronounced "shake yer booty")album). Listen to Black Napkins. Listen to Billy The Mountain. Listen to Sofa. Listen to The Black Page. Insanely amazing music. You can get lost in it.
Don't forget about King Crimson! I still recommend Fracture, from the album Starless and Bible Black. Have fun!

Check out the triple c.d. called 'shut up n play her guitar'. You'll love it. No vocals. Only guitar solos he's performed live around the globe. Its ear melting. He has so much music it'll take you years to hear it.

If the intro sounds a bit ... off, it was actually a studio recording that was later added to the rest of the song, which is done live. Frank often cut recordings from different sources together.
For your next Frank Zappa exploration, I'd suggest "Cheepnis".

More? Montana, Inca Roads, Watermelon in Easter Hay, Trouble Every Day, Filthy Habits, Rat Tomago, The Torture Never Stops, Been To Kansas City, the Yellow Snow Suite, the live Evangelical Suite (if you can find it all in one go), the suite of Village Of The Sun/Echidna's Arf/Don't You Ever Wash That Thing (again, not sure if you can find all of them together but they flow really well). I really could keep going. Oh, and because you seem to catch the crazy drumming (NOBODY hired better drummers than Zappa or gave them more to do), Black Page #1 and Black Page #2. There's no such thing as a "typical" Zappa song. If you ever want to listen to an entire album of the most insanely diverse stuff ever, try Them or Us. The pattern goes: Straight 50's Doo-Wop, Blues song about the dangers of getting a BJ in France, speed metal with backward lyrics, a slow ballad with a ripping fast guitar solo, and then a ballet. No kidding, a freaking ballet! That's just the first five songs. After the ballet, the rest of the album includes a country song, a slow piano ballad, a song about getting a BJ from someone who can remove their false teeth, the best Allman Brothers cover I've ever heard, and a song about frogs and how dirty they are. There are over a thousand songs in the Frank Zappa catalog. It's a wild, wild ride.

That Nasty drummer is Terry Bozzio, Franks best drummer with the right set of skills. It was the perfect fit.
All the other Zappa drummers were good, but this drummer was the best he ever hired, and helped catapult Frank into his finest era, mid 75 - mid 78.

I dunno. I think Vinnie was slightly better for Frank's best stuff. Not taking anything away from how awesome Terry was (and is), but Vinnie was the guy who Frank swore could read his actual mind for rhythm changes. I don't think the Shut Up / Guitar albums would have been as good with Terry.

    • @globextradingsystemsllc1740

@@billmilligan7272 The Terry/frank duo guitar series, never officially released, BEFORE shut up, were BETTER!!! IN fact ship ahoy is my favorite song on the album, and thats with terry. The solos from Baby snakes are better than shut up. Frank used a les paul with smothering pickups with vinnie, to blend in with vinnies sloppy polyrhythms. With Terry, he used the straight up SG, which worked like crap with vinnies poly rhythms. Vinnie wasn't worth keeping after a short tenure, Frank didn't pay him enough, so how well did he really read franks mind, That is total conjecture.

No, Frank Zappa was not a band, he was an individual who led bands. Sometimes the band ran under the name The Mothers of Invention; other times the band would just be under his name. Frank wrote and composed all the music - and he put out literally scores of albums, many on his own label, plus tons of material that was never released in his lifetime but which has been slowly coming out as the Zappa family archivists work through and compile it. Frank's musical interests were also wide-ranging - he wrote and recorded everything from old-school doowop to modern jazz to heavy rock and funk to avant-garde modern classical to uncategorizable wackiness such as this little piece of chaos called Muffin Man. And just about everything he wrote was full of crazy surrealist humor - again, Muffin Man is an excellent sample of that. Now with all that huge assortment and volume of output, figuring out where to start with Frank can be challenging! Personally I think his most accessible-to-newcomers work is his funkier-flavored stuff from the mid-1970s - like his albums Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe, and One Size Fits All. In fact, I recommend the whole so-called Yellow Snow Suite (the first 4 tracks of Apostrophe, from "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" through to the end of "Father O'Blivion," as the next hunk of Frank for you to listen to. Now that'll blow your mind! 😀
