ZZ Top's older music was mega bluesy and was their best material IMO. They went full pop in the 80s and while I still liked their music, it was not as good as their blues sound from the 70s. I must have seen them 100 times in the 70s. If they were playing anywhere in the Southeast, I traveled to see them. The only other band I traveled to see like that was Mother's Finest, from Atlanta. Kick-ass rock and funk. Never made it big here in the US, but they toured in Germany and those people loved them. They rarely came back to the US. They were so good that they caused AC/DC and Aerosmith to cancel tours because people left. Hard band to follow, even for those great bands.

i feel like ZZ Top kept some of the blues in the 80s, but they made it more appealing to the younger generation of the time.

Interviewer: “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?”
Hendrix: “I don’t know. Why don’t you ask Billy Gibbons?” 😎

I thought Jimi said Rory Gallagher , maybe I'm wrong.

Just a quote I read in Guitarist magazine in the 1990s. Rory Gallagher was one hell of a player. I think Hendrix had a soft spot for Terry Kath too.

He said that about other guitarist that he admired just to deflect the question he was very humble

It was also rumored he said the same thing about Terry Kath. But Jimi did love Moving Sidewalks, though.

What a great introduction to ZZ-top! One of my favorite tunes by them. In my opinion they where at their top in the 70:s. Before they discovered synthesizers

I'd stay with the older songs for a bit... They're closer to the roots of Top's special sound. My recommendations:
    La Grange
Waitin' for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago
    Tush
    Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers
    I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide
    Cheap Sunglasses
    I Thank You

Glad to see you loving ZZ Top! One of my favorites is "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide".
You should give a listen to Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Blues at Sunrise".

  • @hog7203

They play that mean, nasty, blues rock music. Such a great riff. One of my favorite bands. Love their first 6 albums. Their later cosmic blues rock MTV music is great also. Like Steely Dan, they have an iconic sound that's always there, even when they changed it up through the years.
A couple of my favorites are Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings and Just Got Back from Baby's.
But you can't go wrong with ZZ Top.

hoping you react to videos. Stevie Ray Vaughn Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo is so amazing it will likely bring tears to your eyes. the song alone does not do it justice unless you see it live. Channeling the guitar gods he was and every guitar god out there would not argue with that. i promise you. you deserve this!!

My favorite southern rock band! From my personal experience I can vouch for how perfectly ZZ Top pairs With skiing…….or the gym.
I dont think this is the best introduction to them however. For myself, there are a dozen better. But still a damn fine song. Joe Bonamassa does a killer cover of this.

If you don't want to be disappointed in ZZ Top just stick to the '70s...They sold their soul to the MTV bullshit "Tits and Ass" garbage taste that permeated the 80s as the image became more important than the music. They broke my heart but they have a great catalog of songs to choose from pre-80s. Stay safe...be well...
