    I’ve been on the OmniPod 5 for 3 days now, as part of a trial. I love it already. I’ve previously been on MiniMeds since 1991, with Dexcom G6 the last two years. Previously, I’m eating glucose because of too low (especially the middle of the night), or pumping more insulin because too high. Without a change of diet, this has already been mostly eliminated. I had to pump .65 unit this afternoon.

      I’m also newly out on the 5 as well. It’s been about 2 weeks for me. Like you, I also previously had troubles with hypoglycemia. I’ve been fortunate though and the only lows I’ve had seem to be due to miscalculating carbs. I’m still getting highs but I’m due to see my endo tomorrow, I’m sure I just need to adjust my carb to insulin ratio and my sliding scale. Glad to hear it’s been going well for you as well! It’s been a God- send so far!

    Great overview, and hope this gets a lot more views with the news of FDA’s approval. It’s no surprise this doesn’t quite have the same custom settings as my DIY Loop (mainly in being able to set targets below or above this 110-150 range), but being able to leave RileyLink at home is a huge plus.

    • @diabetesdailydigest

      Thank you so much! Yeah even though the range may not allow for as tight of control, I feel the algorithm they have constructed will be one of the best, if not the best on the market. Lots of new features to help your blood glucose levels stable.

    My only concern is that the system only goes to 110. I prefer my sugars to be around 90 or 85 for fasting. I understand that lows are a concern, but with a Dex those are not as scary. I prefer for my a1c to be at close to normal as possible, between 5.2-5.7. This is the best a1c for a body to function. I would rather risk a couple of lows than to run my sugar slightly above and risk longterm and debilitating complications like neuropathy, nephropathy, etc.

    • @deanmello832
      @deanmello832 2 года назад +2

      Totally agree. I would guess that over time we are able to adjust lower soon

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад +2

      I definitely agree with you and I think as the technology improves in pumps, we will start to see lower target glucose levels. The new Medtronic 780g is actually capable of setting the target at 100, so a step in the right direction. I know we will get there in time, just a matter of how long it takes to get there.

    • @bobross9612
      @bobross9612 2 года назад +2

      I honestly would agree if I didn’t have those scary lows I almost passed out with 😅 now I’m scared if my sugar starts to get to 80..

    • @erinramsay9914
      @erinramsay9914 2 года назад +1

      @@bobross9612 see. If you didn't feel comfortable with a lower range m, you could adjust it to your comfort level. But if the range is not adjustable, then no one really wins except those who prefer that range Omnipod had pre programmed. I get that docs are scared of lows, but I think we as a community need to really understand that longterm health has the same importance as avoiding lows. Those highs will cost the insurance companies and patients much more overtime. I'm in favor of doing what's best for your body and lifestyle. For that to happen, we need to allow for meaningful flexibility in programming and algorithms.

    hi , thanks for this info been waiting, One question I have is about alarms , 2 years ago I tried the guardian with my minimed pomp at the time , but the alarms drove me mad especially you had to acknowledge the alarm each time ( so with gardening hands full of earth , and the alarm signal saying the blood sugar is going up or going down , and using all the batteries in the pompe quicker, so I didn’t keep it after the trial period of 6 weeks …. Since then I’ve got the omnipod and very happy , so the 5 will be welcomed ( unless too many alarms) thanks

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад

      No problem! The alarms are definitely frustrating, even with my Libre sometimes they get to be quite annoying. Hopefully that won’t be the case with the Omnipod 5 since it’s now adding a CGM component.

    I love the concept of the Omnipod 5 but I am a very brittle diabetic and have been for 50 years. 150 as the highest blood sugar is concerning to me.

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад

      Agreed, but you do have some flexibility, you can set it as low as 110 which I'm sure most people would prefer.

    One thing that wasnt mentioned, this new Omnipod 5/dash , does it also act as a BS meter? Or would I have to carry a seperate BG meter? Im currently using the old style where I can check my BG and bolus ine one PDM.

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад

      So with the Omnipod 5, you either have to use a smartphone to control it, or they will provide you with a pump controller, but essentially it just a locked Android phone, so it wont have a glucometer built in, you'd have to bring a separate one.

    Haven't heard on how the G6 transmitter battery life will be affected by continual communication with the Omni 5. Any info would be appreciated!

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад +1

      Wouldn’t imagine it would be much different, it’s already continually communicating with a phone/reader, just needs to send to one additional device. The tandem is already using this system with the dexcom and it doesn’t seem to cause too much of an issue battery wise, let’s hope this is the same with the Omnipod.

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад +6

      That would be great, but the next milestone I'm most excited about is when they figure out a way to get glucagon into the pump. Then its truly a closed loop system and no more hypoglycemia.

    8 year old son. The Dexcom g6 is not always accurate over/under 30 points especially day 9 and 10. Is there a way to adjust pod? Or does it take manually entered BG over the dexcom?

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад

      You have the option of manually putting in the glucose levels, or having it automatically entered from the Dexcom. So if you see some inaccurate readings in the Dexcom, you can manually input a finger stick reading instead for bolus calculation etc. Is that what you meant?

    • @diabetesdailydigest

      @@diabetesdailydigest I think at the very least if someone can demonstrate they don’t have consistent dangerous lows with current management that there should be a next level option. Maybe controlled by their physician prescription to be allowed access to a lower target. I maintain a 5.0 a1c with less then 1% low time. I understand that they have to appeal to the majority, but the majority can’t benefit if they aren’t offered better either. One size doesn’t fit all.

    When sugar gets low it will stop it self?

    • @diabetesdailydigest
      @diabetesdailydigest  2 года назад +3

      Yep, when the sugar starts going low, the basal rate of insulin will slow down, and if it the blood sugar gets low enough, the basal insulin will completely shut off.
