The rules, for some reason, use a somewhat misleading nomenclature. "Campaign" actually means what most people would call "scenario" and there are seventeen standalone campaigns with varying numbers of factions, maps (no more than two) and length. Then there are ten connected campaigns, all on the big four-map full board, forming a historical account of the wars of the burning banners. So the play options are immense. The designer does not necessarily recommend the full Advanced rules for the Chronicles, as there are many factions to control, and a huge board, and it will take a lot more time and table space if the Advanced rules are all in play. For my part, in this AI-infested age, I think a game with all hand-drawn artwork from the designer deserves to be rewarded-fortunately, the game itself is quite a lot of fun.
I think they called it 'campaign' because the armies involved are waging some kind of campaign during what you call the scenario, like Caesar's conquest of Gaul was a campaign, the Blitzkrieg was a campaign, etc.
This looks awesome, there are too few modern stack 'chits' style of wargames out there, I think the only one that comes to mind is the really old 35+ year old War Of The Ring board game, the one that was replaced with Are's War Of The Ring with plastic miniatures instead of chits.
There are still a lot of companies that produce great hex and counter games - see other Compass Games' titles, GMT Games, Worthington Games, etc... Thanks.
