- Vocal Coach Reaction to Queen - Freddie Mercury - Live Aid - Ken Tamplin
He is the champion of the world
Queen’s performance at Live Aid should have been a footnote in history. By 1985 the band, Queen, was in decline. With ebbing popularity and stinging from the negative press of an ill-advised series of concerts in apartheid-ruled South Africa, the band was slotted between mega acts, U2 and Elton John. Queen was not expected to stun and amaze anyone. That was until Freddie Mercury took the stage. A stripped down set, sans the costumes and spectacle of their earlier years, there was nothing to distract from the performance. And what a performance it was. Leading the enthralled crowd in a rhapsodic sing-along of their greatest hits Freddie could command a stage like few before or since. And the rest, as they say, is history.
This particular performance continues to inspire me nearly 34 year later.

He had a really bad throat infection and was advised by Doctors to not sing. This is incredible work.
RIP Arthur love you bro

Oh, wow, I didn’t know that. It makes it that much more legendary!
Celine Dion had epiglottis during one of her US tours, but she still kept performing in spite of her doctors advising her to rest.
Yes you are one of the beautiful people!
Yes, he already had contracted the virus of which this persistant throat infection was a symptom.
Freddie had such drive even when physically under par....... He deserves the highest Respect.
Thank you for your time on this Ken.
Mark Bennett 👍👍👍
Mark Bennett Freddie was incredibly bold and brave for going out there and performing that day (despite his doctor telling him he should not) for the cause, and of course, as the band said, all of the bands were doing it for the famine in Ethiopia in addition to giving off one heck of a performance. All of them wanted to show off their talents and promote their bands- The older ones not so much but of course The bands who were still making albums and touring. Freddie Mercury was extremely generous anyway, and he would’ve done it alone had he been put in this position. Each of the bandmembers did their individual work but I don’t think any of them had the chemistry that all four members of Queen had together. They were unique and they were special! ❤️
@@montereyharris1277 don't believe the movie...he wasn't diagnosed until.years later. They just came off a tour before live aid...
@@TheCityinthesky
Diagnosis or not, he was still ill that day and had been very strongly advised by his doctor *_not_* to perform. He was definitely 'physically under par,' as Mark said.
@@TheCityinthesky he isnt referring to the movie.freddie had throat infection at that time which is why the doctor advised him not to sing at live aid
Freddie can't be confined to just Rock. He is one of, if not THE greatest singer/performer of all time in any genre.
Mari of the Shire he issss. If you look up who the best vocalist is, hes at the top (or maybe very very close) and he is the greatest preformerrrrrr, hes amazingggg
Mari of the Shire yes! All of the bandmates were different and Brian was mostly a rock person, Roger was rock and jazz, Freddie was a little bit of everything, & John was wonderful with either soft loving music like “ you’re my best friend” or funky music. I thought it was funny when another one bites the dust came out and it was put on R&B . Why not? Queen was great and that song was absolutely incredible. We would dance and rollerskate to it all night long.
Elvis had the better voice and was much more versatile in singing.
@@Katzenhase more versatile than Freddie????? Don't remember Elvis singing opera!!!
@@Katzenhase all Elvis could do was low notes, where Freddie could go to a low F2 (possibly lower) and a high F6 ( and higher but I'm not sure of his highest note)
Freddie had some problems with his throat and was forbidden to sing at this concert by his doctor! But he was drinking some tea with a lemon and honey and did a great job!!! Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio are The best (imho) and cheers to Your channel!!!
Miracle Man - Thanks a lot!
@@kentamplin please react to chris Stapleton

Miracle Man He had recurring nodules on his vocal chords
Miracle Man love both so much, but I now have to add Devin Townsend to that list!
Miracle Man I like your profile pic. Really underrated album.
Freddie was told by his doctor not to go on stage but he did! This is one of the greatest live perfomances ever!
👍💜😀
What is it with our Freddie that just keeps growing new fans year after year. He left for the stars 28 years ago. Can you believe it.
Such a huge loss, merqury5!
It's his personality, he was such a fun guy. His voice was phenomenal but it was his stage presence and his playful nature that drew people to him. He commanded the stage and owned it, I've never seen a concert where the audience that massive were hung on his every word, every song. During we are the champions I get goosebumps watching the audience sway in sync, not many artists can say they commanded the audience as much as Freddie did
That's true, I was born on 1997, and I am fan of Queen.
Queen is the definition on timeless.
You left out the best part! Freddie singing with the audience doing the 'Ayyyyyyyo!' thing 😉
I concur!
I loved that he done some vocal warm ups with the crowd. Crowd interaction to this level?? Incredible.
Great fun energy while you comment.
Funkierthanafunkything epic!!
Funkierthanafunkything yess! That’s always my favorite part. He looked like he was having a blast & all smiles. He did one during their performance in Venezuela that was really cool.
Freddie is the man. The way he could capture and command his audience was like no other. His death was a huge loss to the music industry and his fans. I loved him so much. His contribution to music was phenomenal!! ❤️
The best voice and vocal in the history of music, full of power, soul and feeling.
Emeli I think him and axel rose had the best unique voices in rock
Omg this concert was deemed one of the best rock concerts in history.
Queen must have had a live crowd of nearly 100,000 people at that concert. Imagine what they must have felt like having all of them sing along to their songs and cheering for them? Not to mention all of the many millions of people watching this around the world at that time. WOW, this was an epic moment in music history! Just ICONIC.
Rock on! 👍😀🎤
I this is what happens when you sing with emotion and your heart and soul and it just pours out
I swear Marc Martel must be related to Freddie Mercury! He sounds EXACTLY like him. We need to interview his mom, LOL. 😨😱
Haha! Rock on! 👍😀🎤
When I was 14, I saw Queen live at Morumbi Stadium, in São Paulo, Brazil. A concert for 130K people and they were at the top of the world. In that day, Freddie’s talent simply blew me up! From that day on, I become I huge Queen Fan! I was fortunate to see them again, at Rock in Rio concert, early 85! Another awesome and incredible gig! Freddie was the GOAT! RIP mate!
🤘🏼 legendary band 🤘🏼all these years later I still get goosebumps watching live aid 🤴🏻🖤 nobody works the crowd like Freddie
I've watched this so many times. At the end you can tell he didn't want to leave the stage. That smile of his was so infectious. Thanks for sharing and going over this.
MARYBLEUZ Glad you enjoyed it!
Don't forget - Freddie was singing against medical advice due to a throat condition. Pretty good for a 'bad day'.
I totally agree with you about Marc Martel. In my opinion he is one of very few Artists with pure talent that doesn't need the aid auto tune. He sounds like a young Freddie mercury and I love how he can nail all of Queen's songs. Especially the ones that unfortunately Freddie didn't get to perform live like "Show Must Go On" which is probably my favorite Queen song.
Marc is fantastic!
A really solid singer! But in my opinion not a single patch on the overall package of Freddie - Including his quirky vibrato, Which along with his mesmerizing tone, Makes everything he sung so magical. Marc sings their songs so well tho, I'm not surprised the band work with him. Just to add one more thing. This 20 min slot they had at live aid was amazing, A little disrespectful this man shrugging off some of the performance.. But I guess he had a particular mission for his talking points.
He sang this when his doctor told him not to sing that’s why it sounded a bit different so he made it not sound the exact same. Overall he is FABULOUS I’m his biggest fan.
The doctor had advised Freddie to stop singing, but Freddie already knew he wouldn't recover from aids, which is why he kept singing until the end of his life😔
Don't belive everthing in the movie
Freddie knew that he had aids in 1987 after live aid 1985
So in live aid he didn't know that he had aids
What's amazing to me is that you can tell clear as day that the vocal coach is singing along in his head and trying not to verbally sing along. That's how incredible Queen's music was and how polarizing Freddie was. A concert in 1985 and here we are over 30 years later and Freddie is STILL commanding the crowd.
Goosebumps. The best song ever recorded, sung, composed and everything else. There is no better than Bohemian Rhapsody.!!! I love it.
That time when UK was ruled by a different Queen.
There the only queen who matters to the brits lol
Best rock concert the world has ever witnessed!!
Ahnaf Arib 👍
Thanks😀😀
I miss these great singers who always gave their best and made you hear their genuine heart & soul through their voice and performance! Freddie, Whitney, George Michael, Michael, Aretha, Elvis, Prince and few others left humanity a legacy of great music to last forever.
😊
Indeed the goat vibrato is the solution to the difficult parts in We are the Champions..
The more I hear that closing song, the more it does something to me. Humanity really is the champion. We need to stop all the BS and start acting like champions! Thanks Freddie. Thank you Ken, great video. Not sure how many times I have watched, but great!
When I was in High School in the late 70s early 80s QUEEN kicked ass everyone had a boombox playing QUEEN., Still one of my favorite Rockers.! ,,I was in shock when I heard the day Freddie passed away ,
THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME.
😊
Thanks so much - I didn’t appreciate Queen in their time, mainly due to my youth (now 48) but in the past 5 years I have been more & more able to see their genius. 😊
I was fortunate to see them twice. Once In the late seventies and again at Wembley in 86 I believe. Freddie's voice had changed so much. When I listened to him the first time he had a very pure soft voice with tremendous power. In 1986 his voice was different had a different Timbre and characteristic to it. It seemed like he was really having to strain to reach the notes where before they were effortless for him. Still one of the most amazing performers I have ever seen there will never be another one like him. Just say the man was an enigmatic performer is not giving him justice. I guess the best way to describe him was he had a voice and he would strut on the stage as if he owned it. Even today his voice is unequaled by anyone. Not just an amazing singer but an amazing performer and songwriter. Thanks for taking us back to one of the most memorable performances in the history of Rock. Rock on Ken. BTW your course is amazing Ken I have already added nearly five notes to my range. Thank you so much!
His voice is not better than Robert Plant or Steve Perry.
@@jensz9360 😳
Umm....
His voice was probably bad at that time because he was starting to show signs of AIDS and he was struggling to get over simple infections, he got a lot of throat infections that lasted for long periods of time, and he wouldn't rest which took even longer.
@@jensz9360 everything's subjective in art.
@@jensz9360 his voice mid 70's was 100% better than the pair you've mentioned.
one of the best live performances ever!!!
Okay, I'm gonna say it.
*THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS*
Queen was my very first concert... The Forum in LA...1982. I was 14 and WAY too young to be out with the group of Marines I was with...drinking and partying. But...it was one of the best nights of my life and no concert has ever compared.
My teenage daughters (who have fallen in love with Queen and my COOL status has gone up a notch 😜) and I found pics and video from the concert I went to and we actually found me in the crowd...couldn’t miss me with my feathered beach blonde hair, my solid gold metallic blouse and white slacks that laced at the ankles. I remember everything! I wore super hot gold metallic heels...and lost one of the backs to my gold hoop earrings and worried all night about losing it.
I was SMASHING that night!!! And...got home pretty tipsy but unscathed. I actually married one of those marines a few years later!
Anyway...I feel so honored to have gotten to see them! And, at their best.
My husband now, the love of my life, took me to see Tom Petty and we were so glad because he died a year later. So...very honored to have gotten to see him too! And yes...I dressed for the concert...black and white patterns from head to toe including the sexiest pair of black and white striped high heels you’ve ever seen! Was so afraid that it was for nothing by the end of the concert and he hadn’t sang “Don’t come around here no more”....but...they came back and did it for the encore 😊
I love your videos and how you notice things many others don’t. Thanks for letting me relive some wonderful nights!!!!
By Far the Greatest Band ever in the World, and Freddie Mercury is very much missed. I Wish that I had the opportunity to have seen them perform Live!!❤❤
Freddie was/is the best frontman of all times !

Thank you for this hommage to a great singer and a great man 🎉.
Please Ken don't apologize for stopping the music. After all we did tune in to a Ken Tamplin video. We can watch the Queen video without your comments anytime. 👍
I appreciate you saying that, John!
John Perricone agreed !
Nobody gives Rodger enough credit for his singing. I love the live aid performance because you can really see how he picks up and helps Freddy out when his voice is straining.
Fun fact he had a cold so he held his notes for less time so he didn’t skweak
Squeak
He was ill with aids at the time, it wasn’t a cold. He had just been told he had it
Itskurly Kail no that was in the movie for dramatic purposes he found out in 1986
Why did he hold his note when he goes "I got to goooooooooo" then? Also what about that note when he's doing that acapalla chant to the crowd after Radio Gaga?
They altered the movie a bit so as to address the AIDS issue somewhat, but not dwell on it. Since the timeframe if the movie ended in 1985, it feels like he was sick in 1985. But he was not. He was not diagnosed with the disease until, I think 1989. He did not tell the band until a while later and he made the news public less than 24 hours before he died. For the Live AID concert, he had a throat infection. The doctor did not want him to sing. But he did not want to miss partipating in this fundraising concert. The infection is why he goes sharp on a couple of notes and why he indeed does not hold a few notes as long as he normally would have. But who cares....it was Freddie Mercury and Queen! It was an outstanding performance! I love watching it every time. It never gets old. ❤ ❤
He was special in many ways.
Thank you very much
He certainly was.
@@kentamplin
And you were right, as a musician he was phenomenal, regarding the timeless hits the band still has.
Not only by Freddie of course but as he stated, he is a legend.
My top favourite singer performer etc
The best voice all time
Jair barelli 👍
They made a great show and made me feel like I was in the audience there
He did hit a C5 note on We are the Champions. Marc Martel is good, but he is not Freddie, it is very easy to distinguish their voices if you know Queen's music. He does not have the same power and deepness to his voice, he is not that good with his lower notes. Freddie's voice had resonance on both high and low notes, which is very rare. He almost never sang one phrase with the same pitch and colour. He coloured almost every word. But most importantly he sang with real emotion, you believed every word he sang and it always felt as if he was always giving 100%, with every performance.
There was only one mercury Marc is good even very good and I think he is more than capable of covering the queen material
Exactly...Marc Martel is famous for imitating Freddie, not for his own singing voice which is different from Freddie's.
Marc's voice is too clear, not enough emotion and color in his voice. Another thing, when Marc is having a hard time imitating Freddie live, it's bad.
Freddie appeared on Live Aid against his doctor's orders because he had a bad throat infection.
For someone singing with a bad infection, I think he did an amazing performance.
@@MR-so1pf False. He has been in the group Downhere for years. He's no impersonator.
True but he's very close nobody will ever top Freddie but marck Martel is the closest I've seen
@@kw5021 he's impersonating Freddie in Queen Extravaganza.
Are you disputing this?
I think an imperfect performance delivered with enthusiasm is far more enjoyable than a perfect performance. You can really tell the singers that just love what they do.
Freddy is the best singer in the world, his vibrato is second to none. 😍
A true genius... ❤
Freddie was one of the best frontmen and singers in history. One person from Queen who isn't spoken of much, though, is John Deacon. The man was a genius on the bass. His ability to lock the rhythm while playing really amazing melodies that fit the songs so well really helped shape my style.
Metalbass79 I totally agree and just adore John Deacon. He didn’t want to sing on the record but he would sing along during the concerts. I heard him sing on a RUclips video with Freddie and he has a really good sound. it wasn’t like the others but it was good. John Deacon is listed among one of the top bass players in the top 10.
Queen is a legend and we don't need to argue about that.
Thanks for listening!

Great vid Ken,no body mentions Freddie had a bad voice infection the week leading up to the gig and was advised to pull out.Brian May is one of the most under rated guitarist ever..
He also suffered from nodules since the mid 70s
Shows you how good at guitar Brian is when he can just stand there when the greatest front man of all time is running around you and he just continues playing
That's a great point. That's the main reason for the subpar performance

@Castle Bravo Same , Ive heard so many people rate him and speak so highly of his playing in his genre.
Freddie was told by his doctor that day not to perform as he had a throat infection, I am wearing a white t-shirt & jeans up in the wings! This is the first time I have ever commented on one of these until recently!

Man, Freddy has always ruled to me, worts and all lol. One of my all time favorite singers. I think it's worth looking at his material from Innuendo album. It seems to me like the urgency was so present, but in the face of certain death he sang some material in the key of holy shit. Literally in death he found a way to raise the bar.

Him ending "We are the Champions" with "of the world" in this performance must be why the conspiracy people think the Mandela effect exists. They could swear that the studio version always ended with that, instead of "we are the champions," and then all of a sudden one day it was erased.
