    Depending on where you live will also dictate which grass species you should be planting. I brought in fill dirt to cover some low areas of the lawn and I have a little bit of grass left from the old lawn…. I like the idea of bluemuda grass, but I have read a lot of things about using tall fescue and rye. I’m pretty much starting from scratch. In your opinion what would be the best grass to plant and when ?

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor  2 года назад

      Thanks M P!
      Turf type tall fescue is a really good choice for your area of the world--I would skip the perennial ryegrass though.
      Bluemuda is an option if you want to go to the trouble of establishing the bermudagrass this spring and then coming back in the fall and planting KY bluegrass into it.
      If I had a lawn in your area, I would probably pick a good tall fescue and go with that (and that's what I did when I lived in Lex). You can plant now if you get after it quickly, but the best time of year to seed is in the early fall.
      Let me know if you have any other questions!

      @@MP-wh8st got ya. That's a tough one. depending on how much in the mountains you are, you may be ok with tall fescue in late April but it would be a gamble and you'd probably have to baby it thru the summer. Soil temps in your area probably won't be high enough to seed bermudagrass until mid-late May. Another option would be to sod in TF as it would come in mature and you wouldnt have to worry about immature seedlings struggling in the summer--the obvious issue with this though is cost. Bermuda may well be your best choice...tough one!

      thanks Cody. In FL you're going to want to use St. Augustinegrass, bermudagrass, bahiagrass, centipedegrass, or maybe zoysiagrass. You can buy seed of bermuda, zoysia, centipede, and bahia. There are pros and cons to each of these grasses and some could fit better than others depending on where you are in the state. The fertilizer amount would depend on which grass you go with. Bermuda needs a little more, centipede needs less. It also depends on how fertile your soil is. A good idea regarding fertilizer is to plant your desired grass species and then see how the grass is doing before you apply anything. If it seems to be coming in well, you may not need much (or any) fert. If it is struggling, then applying some probably makes some sense. I know there are also fertilizer bans at different times of the year in FL so you'd have to work around them as well. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor  11 месяцев назад

      if you're going to clean up the weeds and then get new seed out, you'd probably have much better success than if you don't get the yard prepared. I don't know how little you've done to the area but if your soil is just marginal then fertilizing the lawn each fall can help it stay thick. Also, I like to put out a pre-emergent herbicide each spring to keep the annual weeds out so they don't end up taking over. Those couple of things will pay off for your lawn in spades. In your climate, Rutgers Univ recommends mostly tall fescue because of your hot summers. Having a mix with KY bluegrass and tall fescue also isn't a bad idea as each have strengths and weaknesses. Many of the seed mixes you see at the box stores are't great and you'll usually find much better seed by reaching out to a professional turf store in your area. I always check www.ntep.org and see which grasses do well in my area before I either recommend a variety to someone, or choose a grass for my own lawn. Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

      Hi, you are in a tough situation out there. A good turf type tall fescue is likely your best bet to make it through the summer. KY bluegrass would struggle when it gets hot and dry. Tall fescue will likely need a little moisture, but nowhere near as much as some other options. You can plant in the spring but the earlier you can get it in before it gets hot, the better. You can talk to your county agent about getting the soil tested--they're usually pretty cheap.
      As for keeping the seed away from the birds, you can put some straw over the top (this will also keep moisture around the seed and hold seed in place) but you can also lightly rake the seed into the soil to make it less visible to the birds.

    • @GrassDoctor
      @GrassDoctor  Год назад

      @@johnc1280 no, unfortunately you can't test the soil yourself. Even the pH tests that you can sometimes find it stores are not accurate. If you really want to know what's in your soil, send it off to a lab. If your grass is growing well though and the color is good, I don't know that I'd apply anything or worry about testing.
      Good peat moss shouldn't have any weed seed in it and it'll help promote whatever seeds are in your soil--grass or otherwise. I wouldn't let that deter you from using something to help keep the seed in place. If the rain is light, though, I wouldn't worry about it, unless the rain stops and you aren't able to keep the surface moist--that's usually the number one reason that new seedings fail.
      The wet soil shouldn't be a problem for germination but if the rain is hard enough it can certainly wash some away.

There are a few things I've seen that may be helpful but most of the time it's a waste of money. I also don't like a lot of the seed mixes as you often times are buying species or varieties that aren't going to do well--I really don't understand how some of the companies can continue to sell some of their mixes year after year, they're really that bad.
