Rubbish, sorry. The Smiths, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Sleaford Mods - there's 4 great post-Jam bands, and in the case of The Smiths and Radiohead you have 2 of the greatest bands to come out of England.
Early June 1981. Stand and Deliver by Adam & the Ants is deposed for a trio of soppy ballads (by Smokey Robinson,Michael Jackson and,er,Kate Robbins) to sit atop the charts, and many a mush-headed radio DJ of the day melts and gushes on air. Then at number 4 we have this beast - yee har!
+Steve Mcniel Did he say that way back then,or recently,in which case does he think 1981 is better or worse than say 1991,2001 and 2011? Personally I think 1981 had much really good or even great music as well as a bit of not so good music. I'd say 1978 and 1979 both beat it comfortably for sheer strength in depth of great music but not many years since would, but that's my opinion and could have something to do with my age as well!
+Steve Mcniel You got that spot on,though I try not to think about being that age and the old fogeydom it implies,in my mind's eye I lapse easily into thinking like I'm about half or two-thirds that age :-) Weller was always very opinionated and outspoken and most people, even younger ones it seems, tend to diss the present era they live in I suppose.
Lyrics Down in amongst the streets tonight Books will burn, people laugh and cry in their turmoil (Turmoil turns rejoiceful) Shed your fears and lose your guilt Tonight we burn responsibility in the fire We'll watch the flames grow higher But if you get too burnt, you can't come back home And as I was standing by the edge I could see the faces of those who led pissing themselves laughing (And the flames grew) Their mad eyes bulged, their flushed faces said The weak get crushed as the strong grow stronger We feast on flesh and drink on blood Live by fear and despise love in a crises (What with today's high prices) Bring some paper and bring some wood Bring what's left of all your love for the fire We'll watch the flames grow higher! But if you get too burnt, you can't come back home And as I was standing by the edge I could see the faces of those who led pissing themselves laughing (And the flames grew) Their mad eyes bulged their flushed faces said The weak get crushed as the strong grow stronger In the funeral pyre We'll watch the flames grow higher But if you get too burnt, you can't come back home In the funeral pyre We'll watch the flames grow higher But if you get too burnt, you can't come back home In the funeral pyre We'll watch the flames grow higher But if you get too burnt, you can't come back home In the funeral pyre When I feel so young, well I just can't grow up to meet the demands When I feel so old, when I feel so young Well, I just can't grow up to meet their demands Well, I just can't grow up to meet their demands
Thank you, Sir. I love the people who post the lyrics/poetry of songs - especially those so apt for today. Most of us first heard these on cassettes or scratchy vinyl and only caught the half of it.
Great band, I loved them as a kid and still do - 'Funeral Pyre' is definitely in my top three favourite Jam tracks (but it would be nearly impossible to pick the other two !..)
I think this may well be my favourite track of theirs - all three musicians are on fire, the lyrics are superb (and I don’t *do* lyrics, normally) and it has energy, craft and original ideas, unlike many pop songs then or (especially) since.
@@mickymac6571 Given that much of the music we listen to has no voices or words at all, it isn’t really that strange. Anyway, I didn’t pop on here to criticise your attitude or outlook. Maybe I am missing out - but that’s not your problem to handle is it?!
I took part in this video shoot but never made the final cut, but did meet Paul Weller for the 1st time and he spoke to me 'Your the Mod from Guernsey' good stuff all time fav Band.
What a song just sums up life to me. God they don’t make songs like this no more. This was when music was music and had meaning to it and came from the heart. Love the jam good memories of my youth.

One of my favourite jam tracks, plus superb video, great drumming, incredible lyrics...the weak get crushed and the strong get stronger....feel so old and feel so young,I just can't grow up to meet demand...the track can't help to foot tap and chicken nod(lol)all that fire, skill and energy!!
Some songs back in the day really hit the sweet spot - and this one does it in spades. I really liked this less melodic, more menacing/aggressive Jam style.
One of the best songs of all time. Every boxed ticked. Lyrics, vocals, drums, guitar, bass. Just bloody awesome
I remember hearing this back in 1981. I was 15. It literally knocked me off my feet. Best British band after the Beatles. Awesome
Literally? 🙄
Better than the beatles imo 👍
Same here! Rick’s drums…. the best since Keith Moon…
@@GroundhogRoy Yeah. I'd never heard such raw energy

My youth
The Jam were on a different planet musically in the late 70s and early 80s,best days of my life
Funny you should say that. Horsell Common, where this promo was shot, hadn't seen anything so exciting since The War of The Worlds.
........yet another astounding Bruce Foxton bass delivery for the Jam.
I'd like to hear Bruce on Weller's solo songs like Sunflower, Long Hot Summer and others, no bass guitarist Weller had after The Jam was as good
Honestly you can almost taste that bass. Awesome
Outstanding song.
Great music from one of the best bands ever.
What a song that drumming though 🔥🔥🔥
That crashing Rickenbacker and Rick's drumming launch this song into the stratosphere! 👍👍👍

The Jam's greatest ever single, as if you didn't know!
