Alll the way back to VRML, with SGI & Cosmo, the biggest issue that came up, and honestly seems to be there 20+ years later is the content creation, tools, etc. Of course back then there were other bigger walls like lack of bandwidth, lack of 3D hardware acceleration on a mass/consumer scale. But Cosmo Worlds DID in fact kick serious ass in terms of an authoring environment. Now that FB is getting a 'cheap' headset out with build in browser that supports WebXR, etc. I hope that maybe there will now be a prosumer-level authoring tool... Maybe Unreal Engine, being free can do it...?
