Hey everyone! In this video, I'm sharing how I matched derm despite having a low step 1 score, limited research & deciding to pursue the specialty late in my 3rd year of med school! This video is for anyone doubtful about matching into their chosen specialty!

@@TheRealSkinImInMD thank you! I’ve spent the weekend listening to your videos on “mentor for med students” and it’s been wonderful. I️ think for me one of the factors that has recently made me consider the specialty is how it combines infectious diseases, surgical procedures, immunology, histology, and has a wide range of cosmetic as well as pathological practices. As someone who was initially wanting to do infectious diseases, learning more about derm has really piqued my interest. Thank you so much! :)

how can i shadow as an international doctor?
Annyella: Thank you so much for your videos. As an Undergrad student of color many of us do not have access to this valuable information. Because of your videos I decided to apply to the USF MSP3 program because of my 3.35 SGPA. I still have not taken my MCAT. I have a question. What was the medical school you attended? I need to find out what med schools have a dermatology residency. Thank you.
How many total research experiences did you have? Thank you for all your advice :)
I’d say about 7 projects which then led to multiple posters/oral presentations
I don't know if you'll see this but thank you for this very insightful video. Im an IMG currently doing my foundation years in London(Internship) and my dream is to match in dermatology in the states. Since step one will be becoming pass/fail . Ive decided to take a year off and do my masters in clinical dermatology.Do you think this will increase my chances in matching in my dream field? Thanks
I'm not necessarily sure what that masters entails, but having experience and illustrating some kind of training in derm helps to strengthen your application. If you haven't already, check out my video for IMG's where I share some of the tips that my program director discussed with me!
Thank you for making these videos! I’m a current third year DO student and was wondering if you had any advice for me for applying to derm residency. I don’t have a home derm program or mentor currently so I’ve been somewhat overwhelmed and was wondering if you had any advice. I know it’s a lot to ask but I’d truly appreciate it! Thank you!
Hi! Here’s a few suggestions:
- I suggest first searching derm academic centers around your school to look for a mentor. Ask to shadow or do a research project with them. If that’s not available, look for derm private practices. If your hometown is not where you go to Med school also try to build relationships with the derm academic centers in your hometown and ask to shadow over holiday breaks and/or do research projects.
-I also suggest joining DIGA as they have opportunities for Mentorship.

Hi! I am currently starting my second med year in the International Program of Autonomous University of Guadalajara. I would like to apply or contact to mentors, however, I am currently unable to apply to the Aad Mentorship Program because university is not located in the USA, even though my rotations of third and fourth year will be in USA, any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!!

I'm currently not sure what programs take non accredited US programs. However, if you will be in the US in your third and fourth year, I would suggest reaching out to dermatologists in the region you will be in, to try to get the opportunity to shadow/work with them, ask for opportunities to do a rotation or join their research projects.
