“Can you imagine picking something you’ve done since you were a kid and just doing that for the rest of your life?”
As someone who’s watched your videos since I was a kid, this line REALLY stuck out to me. Like, wow wait a minute pause there. I’ve been watching this same person grow and make stuff for most of both his and my entire life.

I think we’re all collectively realising we don’t want to perform anymore. Trading vulnerabilities for an audience is too taxing but it also makes you feel authentic. Being raw can be really comical and we all want to connect with other people.

the reason i love bo burnhams stuff is because he has the ability to call himself out on so much, including being inauthentic as an artist. one of the moments i picked up on is that a camera falls and he perfectly catches it, and it made me think back to the water bit in what. is it real, is it staged? do i care either way as a consumer? i watched inside 5 times in the week it first came out, and every time i pick up on something new.

I made the mistake of watching Inside before going to bed, it kept me up for hours, just contemplating everything it taught me about myself, and the relationships we have with our minds and our jobs, and why we do the things we do, it’s was wildly powerful.

So interesting how jack interpreted that well well look who’s inside again line because as someone with anxiety i interpreted it as meaning being inside and and desperately wanting to put yourself out there but when you do something happens that proves to you you should never have gone done in the first place and the well well part is kinda sarcastic like you only went out to come back in once one thing didn’t go your way. That’s why i love bo though so many ways to take his work

    • @seanlegumes8580
      @seanlegumes8580 3 года назад +9

I interpreted it quite similarly to you except for the well well bit. In particular the second line "went out to look for a reason to hide again." I think this is more about wearing your weakness as armour. As someone with anxiety also I am guilty of this. Its kinda where you tell yourself and others I can't do x or y because I'm shy, or have anxiety. So when I heard the lyric I thought of going out, trying to find a reason to justify why you want to just stay inside away from everyone.

I don’t know where i’m going with this but, thanks Jack! thanks for being there over the last 8 years and for inspiring me along the way. okay, 8 years sounds crazy how has time gone so fast. i was in theatre for a long time, but have distanced myself now because i couldn’t handle the pressure both on and off stage. i’m now going down at art route and it’s still so daunting having people judge your creativity. i still don’t know where this is going, but thank you Jack. For being there, over a difficult time of my life :)

Every theory and breakdown of Inside I've watched has been so different and drawn such different lessons and conclusions from it and I LOVE it. So interesting that you saw the smile at the end as satisfied, I thought it looked a bit twisted and broken.
Thanks for showing a bit of the behind the scenes. Your chats to camera are always so meticulously filmed, lit and edited (and to some extent scripted) - if I were being an armchair psychologist, I'd say it's not dissimilar to Bo, telling your audience "this is a performance". Sorry if I'm reaching.
    Have a lovely day, all

Your reading into 'look who's inside again' is so interesting. Personally, as someone that suffers from severe anxiety and depression since I was young I read it as 'I've always been so inclined to find reasons to hide away from the world because I'm too scared to be a part of it' - almost especially in the wake of him realising in January 2020 that he's ready to stop hiding and reenter the world again... and then once again finds another reason to hide away (even if that reason isn't his fault this time, but he's still able to beat himself up about it). But I really loved your interpretation, gave me a new way to look at that whole theme.

    • @poppybottle
      @poppybottle 3 года назад +1

also - one of the things I absolutely adore about the breakdown scene is that he cries almost exactly the same as how the video game version of him cries (head in hands, dramatic rocking back and forth). Combine that with the random flash up of the video game streamer earlier on in the movie and it's like another delicious layer of commentary about what's performance and what's authentic.

I think another reason we all related to Inside, besides the obvious pandemic undertones, is something he talks about a lot in both Eighth Grade and Make Happy as well: We are all preforming. Always. Especially with social media, we are “content to lie down at the end of the day and watch our lives as a satisfied audience member”. Inside is definitely about the creative process and the codependency between art and artist, but I also think it’s about how, with social media, the younger generations are expected to become those performers no matter what. Which inevitably effects how we experience things. Anyway. Loved this video and your analysis

something surreal about vlogging that makes me feel weird (and this thought is triggered by the end bit where jack talks about putting the mic on the stool and walking away) is those vlogs of people existing in a space somewhere, filming themselves walking round from a distance. yknow the ones where we see them walk past us on th street or walk away from us through a forest. and you have that realisation that they've placed the camera on the floor, walked past it, then had to come back to it to pick it up. I don't know why but that mental image has stuck with me

Your thoughts on this were pretty eye-opening for me. As a creative who had pretty bad depression even before a pandemic, I enjoyed inside but it made me irrationally angry. I am seeing this guy suffer on camera (or more performing suffering on camera) and all I could feel was this a person who gets to create while I have to work in a grocery store right now. And I felt that even though he is Extremely self-aware, talented, and with truly valid feelings about current events, he is missing at least part of the point. And maybe he still is, but viewing it through the lens of someone not only struggling with current events but also struggling with why he is even making art and "why do I come back to this if it causes me pain?" That conflict feels more genuine to me. And maybe my initial dislike comes from my own insecurities about creating or anger about wealth in America, but I think I may need to have a rewatch, it may be a bit more cathartic the second time around

My favorite song from Inside is Don't Wanna Know, and I specifically love the line "I'm asking but don't answer 'cus I don't wanna know." This is my exact relationship with choreographing dances for my teenage students. I want to know if they like it, but also it's something I'm creating so I don't really want to know. And the way he cuts himself off mid-word- when the insecurity starts creeping in because my students are too quiet about whatever we're doing, I do find myself starting to ask these questions about "do you like this" and forcing myself to stop. For me at least this song really articulated what it feels like to create things for other people.

The thing with your video, as much as I want to believe you’re being authentic, we can never really know, for all we know, this is actually a well thought out script with specific beats and moments in the monologue you’re talking to us about.
Thats the beauty and tragedy of making something for an audience and not for yourself to see only. It’s always performative. That’s the struggle, that’s being stuck INSIDE, that’s being able to never go outside again. Cause once you open yourself up to the world, that’s it, you can’t leave.

There's something so surreal about looking back at those little clips of the person you aren't anymore but will always be, still captured and still in a way living in that exact moment they were filmed, remembering watching them as they came out. Then snapping to the you in the moment of this being filmed, and realizing how fast those years that have passed and the way things have changed. For what it's worth, I'm glad you're still making videos. I'm glad you capture these tiny moments of your life, and give us just a little shift in perspective. There's something reassuring about a voice from comedy sketches I watched in the dark on bad nights reflecting back, and looking forward. Thanks for still doing this work.

Eighth Grade and Inside have been the two most important pieces of media I’ve watched during quarantine (both almost exactly a year apart)
I'm not a filmmaker, nor a youtuber, but the themes explored in the films reach far beyond that I think. As Bo mentioned in many interviews, living in a digital world kind of makes filmmakers of us all, while making us subject and spectator our own films. I never could quite put my finger on it before, this ‘funny feeling’ of being audience and creator in one, and constantly experiencing the present as some future content of the past. These films helped me comprehend a little better the nonsensical chaos that is (parasocial) existence right now. Life as performance isn’t a new idea, but the current context in which it manifests blew it out of proportions and Bo perfectly captured it imo. Not sure how to articulate this but I think those feelings also have something to do with doing everything in our power to not be invisible while desperately needing to distance ourselves from the anxiety of being some centre of attention.
    Great video Jack, as always.

i think this special is so interesting because it defies any and all categorisation- is it a "special" (shorthand for the recording of a performance), is it scripted, is it a documentary, is it a video or a film? is it a musical or a phsycological thriller? and the rad thing is that it's all of these things at once. it's such a multifaceted piece of art that it reflects in all firections and that's why i think it's almost universally liked, because it can resonate with basically everyone in one way or another. it's as much similar to theatre as it is to cctv footage. it's a study of identity and performance. i found it facinating that multiple comments on videos of bo's performances, old and new, mentioned Erving Goffman, a famous sociologist who wrote about how everyone is basically performing at all times. bo has managed to make something completely facinating and always unfolding. whether it's all genuine and earnest or planned to the second, it's utterly impressive.

i rewatched Inside yesterday, and with all the music i still didn't love, love it. but , i really just can't appreciate it enough the way you talk about movies.. at least for me, you have the ability to mediate between film, the artist both concrete and abstract (being an audiovisual artist yourself) and me as a viewer, like it's so pleasant to learn and follow your thoughts, the way you build an intersubjective understanding - now i do appreciate certain aspects of art in Inside that i hadn't perceived like this before. pls never break up with Mark Kermode

I got into RUclips in 2009 via Vlogbrothers and the galaxy of vloggers that formed the extended community. I stopped watching vloggers when it became clear that RUclips was turning people's personalities into a commodity (also, the nightmare of all the sketchy conduct within that community that came to light around 2013). The relationship that artists have with their creations/creative process in context of their livelihood have tortured artists for centuries, I think. But the "My art is me, I am my art" factor is more literal now than ever.

I'm not specifically a digital creator, so I can't relate exactly. However, 'Inside' hit me on a million different creative levels. And also a million different personal levels. There is a huge internal duality of pain and pride when I, as a creator, choose to make something, and then put it out into the world. It's almost becomes a physical need, to make the thing, but also oh my god I can't let anyone see it yet. I need to let my voice be heard, I want to connect with someone, I desperately crave the thing that's weighing down my brain from the inside, to be released into the wild. And I'm going to sit in a room slowly killing myself to do it, for literally as long as it takes. That's a love affair that I have no choice in. (My mental anguish and desperation for perfection really just get on like a house on fire)
What Bo Burnham did (regardless of whether it was all a show or not), was tell the entire story, and take you along for his creative journey - mental, physical, spiritual, comical, whatever - of the creation of a thing. He seamlessly transitioned between 'real' and 'fake' versions of himself, and used both sides to show the pictures of chaos and calm and creativity and hopelessness that has been almost every person's mental experience during this pandemic. And he did it with spectacular lighting, sound, transitions, and tiny details that made you just ugh *chef's kiss*
In my partner's opinion, nothing Bo Burnham does will ever top 'What'.
In my opinion, 'Inside' was nothing short of the masterpiece that every artist and creator goes their whole life waiting for the opportunity to make. And I'm so glad I was here to see it :) Thanks Jack for saying what I've been trying to.

As much as Inside contains a very obvious and intentional throwback to the ending of Make Happy, I truly feel it is more of a sequel/response to Eighth Grade (and all the other experiences he's had in the time since), so I'm definitely more on the side of "it's a film". Naturally there are themes and ideas in Inside that have built up and carried through all of his career, but if Eighth Grade is an exploration of the emotional effect technology is having on us and our anxieties, with a hopeful outlook for the future, Inside feels like it's taking a look at a different side of that picture, with a bit more dread and uncertainty, more little more depression than anxiety... And, of course, re-contextualizing those thoughts in the pandemic. Like, Kayla has both the social elements of her phone and the option to get out there into the deep end (see what I did there) and hang out with people. Whereas we have no choice but to fall back down into social media to get to see our loved ones, and live our lives when our only choice is to stay inside. But also this is coming from a very biased POV, where I am sick to everloving death of my phone and my computer now in Summer 2021, but if I don't sit at my computer to hang out with my friends online, I am much sadder. Man, I listened to waaaaay too many Eighth-Grade interviews with Bo, and the distress I feel when the interviewer/audience ask Bo some big, big picture questions about how bad he thinks social media can get...I feel like those conversations blossomed into some of the most gut wrenching lines in Inside. Whelp. This was long winded. Sorry. Inside clearly still rattling around in my head, as it seems it is for all of us.

Have you seen Bo’s 2013 series Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous? I watched it last week and, aside from being incredibly fun, it makes a really fascinating contrast/comparison to the themes of Inside and Bo’s other work. Surprisingly thought-provoking!

I love the conclusion you made about that if it was a performance it doesn't matter. Yes that's it because that's what he wanted to portray to you. Even if it wasn't real the performance was real. And that's the truth he wished to tell

i think the issue of a hobby becoming a job has to do with the need to capitalize everything we enjoy. we’re inside the game and if we don’t play then there’s no sustenance, you _have_ to make money and if it happens to be doing something you enjoy(ed?) doing, it makes sense. but capitalism won’t let a single stone unturned. labor is labor, and that’s why i think it can feel forced. it doesn’t mean you don’t like that thing anymore it’s just that making it a job sucks the fun out of it inevitably.

Inside is "A Night With", a "One Man Show" or an art film rather than a special because while it is funny it isn't necessarily stand up.

4:50 anyone else get the feeling that Jack repeated himself a third time to play into the whole ‘this is authentic look at how I’m fucking up’ vibe? Ironic considering he’s trying to say ‘is what I’m watching real?’

I feel like creators talking about Bo, project too much onto him. Yes, he is talking about performing a lot in older works, but actually not that much in Inside...
A lot of people, me included, related to Inside a lot, without even thinking about being a performer. It's great that you related in this way, but it often feels like performers relate everything they feel and experience through that lens.
Like the "went out to look for a reason to hide again" resonated with everyone that feels the anxiety of going out in a world where living inside is so much easier.
I just think you might not like it this much because you are a RUclipsr, but because he describes our current time and therefore our relationship with the internet on a very intimate level.

    Interesting thoughts.
I watch a number of vlogs, mostly having to do with poker. Some are professional poker players, some are amateurs. (I don't know that I'd call any of them recreational players.) One has a background in the music industry. One is a TV reporter for a local station and so makes videos on a professional level. There's always artifice in a vlog even when what they're recording is, by necessity, at least partially authentic. There are, after all, hundreds or even thousands of dollars on the line. Even so, occasionally you get a pro admitting he played a hand this or that way, or sometimes he's in a hand he wouldn't play at all, because it would make good material for the vlog.
So on the one hand, they're often quite up-front that they're not 100% "authentic" to the degree that the act of recording what they do day-to-day for an audience changes what they do. And then there's the artifice involved that they actually _don't_ acknowledge. A portion of the vlog might open with a dramatic shot of the vlogger pulling up with his car, getting out, and then talking to the camera. OBVIOUSLY he didn't do this spontaneously. He had to have driven to the site, set the camera up, get back in his car, drive away, then drive back and then "notice" his audience.
Just a little weird that it's never all one thing or the other.
